Changes in product orders also lead to a frequent reconfiguration of electronics production lines. However, due to unreasonable design, many EPLs fail to meet the initial objective. This recommended practice addresses a preferred technique to help practitioners efficiently design a high-performance EPL. Overview of the S

Apple has now fully paid $16.5B to Ireland in back taxes, closing the matter

The nine-year saga between Apple, the Irish government, and the EU ended last year when the final appeal ordered the iPhone maker to pay €13B ($15B) in back tax to the Irish government. That money sat in an escrow account for many years, increasing in value to €14.25B ($16.5B), but has now been paid … The end of a nine-year saga Apple funneled the revenue from all its sales throughout the EU through its European HQ in Ireland. Apple likely chose the location because the country already had an

AV startup Pronto acquires off-road autonomous vehicle rival SafeAI

The Venn diagram of engineers who know a little bit about AI, self-driving, and mining has a small intersection. Pronto CEO Anthony Levandowski wants as many of those people as possible. And an acquisition is helping him achieve that goal. The San Francisco-based startup, which has developed a self-driving system designed for haulage trucks and other off-road vehicles used at construction and mining sites, has acquired competitor SafeAI, TechCrunch has learned. Terms of the deal have not been

This robot vacuum broke the industry mold. Here's my verdict after months of testing

ZDNET's key takeaways The Matic is available for purchase at $1,095. This robot vacuum has a unique form factor and roller brush, and a debris bag that eliminates the need for a huge dock. Enabling This One iPhone Feature Has Helped Me Get More Precious, Quality Sleep

I take sleep seriously and will honestly try anything that promises to help me get more rest. However, getting quality sleep doesn't have to involve a white noise machine or other device you have to buy with your hard-earned cash. In fact, as I discovered, it can be as simple as turning on a certain feature on your iPhone. Go figure. For the past five years, I've been getting better, longer sleep thanks to this one hidden iPhone feature. For those who also struggle with sleep and happen to have

The ISS is nearing retirement, so why is NASA still gung-ho about Starliner?

After so many delays, difficulties, and disappointments, you might be inclined to think that NASA wants to wash its hands of Boeing's troubled Starliner spacecraft. But that's not the case. The manager of NASA's commercial crew program, Steve Stich, told reporters Thursday that Boeing and its propulsion supplier, Aerojet Rocketdyne, are moving forward with several changes to the Starliner spacecraft to resolve problems that bedeviled a test flight to the International Space Station (ISS) last

What Was Cyberpunk? In Memoriam: 1980-2020 (2020)

To wrap up our look at print sci-fi I am going to compare and contrast two books released in 2020 that both have much in common with Mirrorshades, but in very different ways:, Gibson’s (“””the father of cyberpunk”””) Agency and Miciah Johnson’s debut novel “The Space Between Worlds”. I am going to be a little mean to Gibson, but hopefully by the time you’ve read both summaries you’ll understand why. Webb spots 'Infinity Galaxy' that sheds light on black hole formation

Discoveries keep pouring out of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Researchers observed an unusual cluster, which they dubbed the Infinity Galaxy. It appears to support a leading theory on how some supermassive black holes form. Although "Infinity Galaxy" sounds like a place Thanos would hang out, it merely describes its appearance. Two compact, red nuclei, each surrounded by a ring, give the cluster the shape of an infinity symbol. What's inside is more interesting. (After all, this is a
