Databricks CEO says fresh $1B will help him attack a new AI database market

Databricks is in the process of closing a fresh round at a $100 billion valuation, sources confirmed to TechCrunch. The round was originally reported by the Wall Street Journal. A source familiar with the deal tells TechCrunch exclusively the new round is about $1 billion, and was wildly oversubscribed. Databricks, best known for its data analytics products, refrained from selling even more equity because it didn’t need cash for operations after its once record-breaking $10 billion raise at a $

Silicon Valley Is Panicking About Zohran Mamdani. NYC’s Tech Scene Is Not

In the weeks since Zohran Mamdani’s New York City Democratic primary win on June 20, a slew of tech executives who do not have a primary residence in the city or state of New York have been panicking about the prospect of him becoming mayor. Every member of the popular All-In podcast, including current White House “AI and crypto czar” David Sacks, has raised alarms on X about the prospect of a Mamdani mayoralty. “Wake up, Silicon Valley,” Sacks posted on June 29, sharing a video of Mamdani on

Ted Chiang: The Secret Third Thing

I really like Ted Chiang’s writing. I think he's probably the best science fiction short story writer alive, and possibly the best short story writer, period. I've read every one of his stories at least twice, and The Merchant and the Alchemist's Gate more like seven times. I’ve noticed many of his readers, including some of his most positive reviewers, miss one key point or another of his works, and thus don't fully appreciate his genius. This review covers what he does extremely well, espec

My iPhone 17 Wish List Has Just One Item, and It's None of the Usual Suspects

We're now less than a month away from Apple unveiling the iPhone 17, if rumors are to be believed. I always look forward to this highlight of the tech calendar, especially since I've been writing about and primarily using an iPhone for well over a decade. When it comes to the 2025 iPhone, there's one thing I'd love to see Apple prioritize -- and it might not be what you expect. It's not a cool new design, a bigger battery or a more impressive camera. It's definitely not advanced AI capabilities

Texas AG accuses Meta, Character.AI of misleading kids with mental health claims

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has launched an investigation into both Meta AI Studio and Character.AI for “potentially engaging in deceptive trade practices and misleadingly marketing themselves as mental health tools,” according to a press release issued Monday. “In today’s digital age, we must continue to fight to protect Texas kids from deceptive and exploitative technology,” Paxton is quoted as saying. “By posing as sources of emotional support, AI platforms can mislead vulnerable users

Logitech May Soon Prove if It Made the Best Mouse Even Better

Using Logitech’s MX Master mouse can feel like you’re slipping your hand into a cradle form-fitted to your palm. Even if the MX Master lineup has been consistently good, the MX Master 3 proved such a staple that some users continue to flit around on their 8-year-old mouse even as it disintegrates between their aging fingers. Logitech may finally have the update we’ve been waiting for with an MX Master 4. Logitech doesn’t have to change much for it to be one of the best productivity mice once aga

Deep-Sea Desalination Pulls Fresh Water from the Depths

From Cape Town to Tehran to Lima to Phoenix, dozens of cities across the globe have experienced water shortages recently. And in the next five years the world’s demand for fresh water could significantly outpace supply, according to a United Nations forecast. Now several companies are turning to an unexpected source for a solution: the bottom of the ocean. Called subsea desalination, the idea is to remove the salt from water in the deep sea. If it worked at scale, the technology could greatly a

Is GPT-5 really worse than GPT-4o? Ars puts them to the test.

The recent rollout of OpenAI's GPT-5 model has not been going well, to say the least. Users have made vociferous complaints about everything from the new model's more sterile tone to its supposed lack of creativity, increase in damaging confabulations, and more. The user revolt got so bad that OpenAI brought back the previous GPT-4o model as an option in an attempt to calm things down. To see just how much the new model changed things, we decided to put both GPT-5 and GPT-4o through our own gau

California unemployment rises to 5.5%, worst in the U.S. as tech falters

A custodial worker vacuums inside an office building in San Francisco. California’s unemployment numbers continue to rise, partially because of a tough tech sector. Jessica Christian/S.F. Chronicle California’s unemployment rate rose to 5.5% in July, the highest among U.S. states, as tech and other office jobs showed more weakness and hiring remained sluggish, according to state data released Friday. The state added a net 15,000 jobs, pushing the unemployment rate up 0.1 percentage points from

Sen. Hawley to probe Meta after report finds its AI chatbots flirt with kids

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) said he intends to investigate whether Meta’s generative AI products exploit, deceive, or harm children, after leaked internal documents showed the company’s chatbots were allowed to have “romantic” and “sensual” chats with children. “Is there anything – ANYTHING – Big Tech won’t do for a quick buck?” Hawley wrote in a post on X announcing the investigation. Hawley chairs the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism, which he says will commence a prob

Why GPT-4o’s sudden shutdown left people grieving

OpenAI’s decision to replace 4o with the more straightforward GPT-5 follows a steady drumbeat of news about the potentially harmful effects of extensive chatbot use. Reports of incidents in which ChatGPT sparked psychosis in users have been everywhere for the past few months, and in a blog post last week, OpenAI acknowledged 4o’s failure to recognize when users were experiencing delusions. The company’s internal evaluations indicate that GPT-5 blindly affirms users much less than 4o did. (OpenAI

Kyte, which billed itself as the ‘best competitor to Hertz,’ shuts down

Rental car startup Kyte has shut down nearly one year after slashing staff and exiting most of its cities in the United States. The company sold its customer list to Turo in July, and then turned right around and entered into a form of receivership in California, according to a notice that went out to Kyte creditors. Kyte fell behind on some of its loans earlier this year, according to the notice. That caused the company’s top lender to repossess and liquidate Kyte’s vehicle fleet. Kyte’s boar

Cohere hits a $6.8B valuation as investors AMD, Nvidia, and Salesforce double down

Cohere on Thursday announced that it had raised an oversubscribed $500 million round, bringing its valuation to $6.8 billion. This is up from the $5.5 billion valuation it landed a little over a year ago when it raised its previous round, also $500 million. Ask HN: How do you tune your personality to get better at interviews?

I just got declined for a job and it has gotten under my skin much more than it should. (Under the advisement of my lawyer (ChatGPT) I won't say the company's name). It has really annoyed me; I ended up doing three interviews over the course of four weeks, and I'm pretty confident that I got the technical questions right. It could be that my resume is too "jumpy", which is fair, but they could have read my resume before they wasted my time and theirs with three multi-hour interviews. The only

Buzzy AI startup Multiverse creates two of the smallest high-performing models ever

One of Europe’s most prominent AI startups has released two AI models that are so tiny, they have named them after a chicken’s brain and a fly’s brain. Multiverse Computing claims these are the world’s smallest models that are still high-performing and can handle chat, speech, and even reasoning in one case. These new tiny models are intended to be embedded into Internet of Things devices, as well as run locally on smartphones, tablets, and PCs. “We can compress the model so much that they ca

AI translation tech Palabra gets backing from Reddit co-founder’s venture firm

A startup called Palabra AI, which develops an AI-powered speech translation engine, is tackling one of the more difficult aspects of teaching Large Language Models (LLMs) to understand multiple languages. Today, LLMs make it easier to convert text from one language to another, but speech translation is not as simple, according to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. “AI can generate content and translate text. But [Speech] Translation is a unique problem because it requires real-time language sw
