Nature advice column offers roadmap for PhD students switching labs mid-program

A biochemistry graduate student wrote to Nature seeking guidance on leaving a lab led by a prominent but largely absent adviser, citing stalled research progress and lack of mentorship. Nature consulted current and former graduate students, ombudspersons, academic administrators and a PhD career counselor from multiple research institutions to outline how students can responsibly transition between labs mid-PhD.

Whitehead Institute uses Google's AI Co-Scientist to target MYC-driven cancer

Biochemist Anna Pertl at the Whitehead Institute prompted an AI system called Co-Scientist to generate novel strategies for disrupting molecular condensates that fuel the cancer-driving protein MYC. Unlike a simple chatbot, the tool deploys multiple autonomous agents that search literature, debate competing explanations, and iteratively refine hypotheses before returning results, a process that can take hours. The work builds on prior findings by her supervisor Richard Young, whose lab showed cancer cells hijack condensates at super-enhancers to overproduce MYC, research now being pursued commercially through his company Dewpoint Therapeutics.

Researcher calls for standardized measures of climate-driven mental and cultural harm ahead of COP31

A clinical psychologist and public-health researcher describes how coastal communities in Kenya and elsewhere are experiencing psychological and social fallout from climate change, including anxiety, substance abuse, gender-based violence and eroding cultural traditions tied to livelihoods like fishing. The author argues these non-economic losses—identity, belonging, intergenerational knowledge—are rarely captured in climate policy discussions, and calls for new tools to measure them ahead of COP31 negotiations in Antalya and Climate Week NYC 2026.

University leaders propose six-point framework to defend academic freedom worldwide

A university president outlines six principles meant to help institutions resist political pressure on research funding, peer review and academic autonomy, citing examples from the United States and Hungary. The piece traces how funding cuts, shifting grant priorities and legal campaigns against institutions like Central European University have already eroded independent scholarship in some countries.

Explainer clarifies differences between wired and fixed wireless home internet

The comparison explains that wired internet delivers a physical connection via fiber, cable or DSL lines into a modem, while fixed wireless internet uses a gateway that connects to a provider's 4G LTE or 5G network instead of a cable. Once inside the home, both setups function similarly, distributing internet through a router or all-in-one gateway that can support Wi-Fi and Ethernet-connected devices alike.

Community revives Commodore's 1990s Amiga Unix for 68040/68060 hardware

A volunteer-run project called amigaux.org is bringing Amix — Commodore's System V Release 4 Unix for the Amiga, originally sold in 1990-92 for the A2500UX and A3000UX — back to life on 68040 and 68060 machines and modern accelerator boards. The effort adds a modern toolchain, a package manager (apkg) that pulls prebuilt tools like grep, gzip and less from a repository, and new drivers for hardware the OS never originally supported, including Z3660 and A4091/A4092 accelerators.

CarPlay now supports ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, Perplexity and Siri AI voice chats

Apple's CarPlay now lets drivers use voice-based AI assistants including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Meta AI, Grok, and Anthropic's Claude, with Siri AI added for iOS 27 users on iPhone 15 Pro or newer. Drivers can launch a new voice chat or resume prior conversations directly from the CarPlay Home Screen, and can rearrange app icons via iPhone Settings for easier access.

Apple lets Android and Windows users join FaceTime calls via browser link

Apple has enabled non-Apple users to participate in FaceTime calls through a web browser, a capability that has existed since 2021 with iOS 15 and macOS Monterey but remains largely unknown. An iPhone or Mac user must generate and share a FaceTime link, which Android and Windows users can open in an updated browser to join the call without installing any app.

iFixIt teardown finds iPhone 18 Pro's display frame prone to cracking during repair

iFixIt disassembled four units of the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max and found that the plastic frame behind the display broke on three of them during removal. Since Apple doesn't sell that frame as a standalone part, a cracked one means replacing the entire display module. Separately, YouTuber Zach Nelson's own teardown didn't encounter the same issue and he rated the phone favorably for repairability.

No new Snowden archive documents released since May 2019, records show

The last document from Edward Snowden's leaked NSA archive was published on 29 May 2019 by The Intercept, which had closed its archive earlier that year before releasing one final batch of files. Major outlets including The Guardian, Der Spiegel, The New York Times and ProPublica had already stopped publishing from the trove years earlier, between 2014 and 2015. Since 2019, no journalist, news organization or institution has published any further material from the archive.
