New research by Benjamin Shultz, published by think tank Agora Digitale Transformation, analyzed about 160 websites hosting nonconsensual deepfake sexual content and found 138 women members of parliament from 22 EU countries were referenced or depicted, compared with just nine men. The study covered over 5,800 national lawmakers across the EU, with politicians from Germany, the Netherlands, Italy and France most frequently appearing.

Trump advisor David Sacks rejects Anthropic's call for government-backed AI slowdown

After Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay urging US regulation to slow AI development, and Sam Altman, Elon Musk and Satya Nadella voiced support for pacing progress, White House tech advisor David Sacks pushed back publicly. Sacks told AI leaders they don't need government permission or antitrust waivers to slow down voluntarily, and questioned whether their motives were truly altruistic.

WIRED's 2026 soundbar guide crowns Focal Mu-So Hekla top pick, lists Sonos and Sony alternatives

WIRED's latest soundbar roundup highlights the Focal Mu-So Hekla as a standout premium option, praising its 15-speaker array, powerful bass, upfiring Dolby Atmos drivers and intuitive companion app. The guide also names honorable mentions including the Sonos Beam Gen 2 and Sony Bravia Theatre Trio, noting each device's tradeoffs in sound quality, price and expandability.

AI stocks tumble as Amodei and tech leaders call for slower AI development

Global markets sold off Monday after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and other prominent tech figures publicly urged a slowdown in AI capability development. Chipmakers and hyperscalers bore the brunt: Samsung, SK Hynix, ASML, Nokia, Infineon, Micron, Intel and Nvidia all dropped sharply, while SoftBank fell 10% in Tokyo trading. The rout followed a heated online dispute sparked by a former Anthropic/OpenAI researcher's resignation over safety fears, which escalated when an Anthropic safety researcher estimated a greater than 10% chance AI could wipe out humanity within a decade.

Trump's 2025 disclosure lists $1.4B in crypto-linked income

Donald Trump's federal financial disclosure for 2025 reports roughly $1.436 billion in crypto-related income and proceeds, drawn from CIC Digital, DT Marks Defi and stablecoin ventures tied to World Liberty. A separate Reuters analysis puts total profit from Trump family crypto ventures at over $2.3 billion between mid-2024 and April 2026, though the White House denies any conflict of interest, saying his children manage the businesses while he remains the beneficiary.

Anthropic's Dario Amodei calls for a 'balanced pace' in AI development

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay titled 'We Must Pace The Frontier,' arguing that AI's transformative benefits—from disease cures to economic growth—come paired with serious risks that warrant a measured development speed. His essay arrives alongside more extreme warnings from AI safety advocates like Eliezer Yudkowsky, who has called for sweeping government control over AI-related speech and publication as an emergency measure.

Apple developing first-party iPhone game controllers, likely under Beats brand

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports Apple has spent over a year building its own gamepads for iPhone, following code found in a macOS 26.7 release candidate. Two versions are in development, differing in motion sensors and haptics, both featuring a standard layout with D-pad, dual sticks, shoulder buttons and triggers. Beats executives are reportedly leading the project, hinting the controllers may launch as Beats accessories rather than Apple-branded products.

Frederick County, Maryland offered $110M community benefits package for new data center campus

Developers behind the proposed Frederick Digital Campus have pitched a $110 million package to Frederick County, Maryland residents to secure approval for the site, which would house tenants including Amazon and Aligned Data Centers. The package includes a $30 million elementary school, $40 million in recreational facilities, a $14.5 million workforce training center, $10.5 million for agricultural preservation, and up to $100 million toward a water reclamation system that would cut potable water use by 80%.

Android phones hide a separate 'System services' update menu beyond OS patches

Beyond the usual OS and security update settings, Android devices include a distinct, less visible menu for updating individual system services like Google Play services. Depending on the manufacturer, these services may need to be updated separately from the main software update screen, and how they appear can vary between brands such as Google Pixel and others.

Modders cut FSR 4 upscaling time in half on AMD's repurposed PS5 mining chip

A community developer has reworked AMD's FSR 4 upscaler to run far more efficiently on the BC-250, a leftover PS5-derived crypto-mining board now being turned into a Linux gaming device. Testing showed 1440p processing time drop from 11.51ms to 5.92ms, with similar roughly 50% gains at 1080p and 4K, while producing output identical to the original shaders. The gains build on earlier Mesa driver work and now shift the optimization into a portable FidelityFX DLL.

Roborock's Qrevo 2 Pro Brings Corner-Cleaning Muscle to Budget Robot Vacuums

Roborock has revived its long-dormant Qrevo line with the Qrevo 2 Pro, launched at the end of August after a Qrevo Curv refresh earlier this year. The sub-$1,000 robot vacuum pairs a 20,000 Pa motor and LiDAR navigation with a FlexiArm mop and reversible side brush designed to reach corners and edges other robots miss. A WIRED reviewer who tested it for two weeks called it one of the best budget options available, rivaling the Eufy Omni C28, though it still struggles to detect small clutter like cords or toys.
