Kirby Air Riders feels more like F-Zero than Mario Kart

is an editor covering deals and gaming hardware that he thinks you’ll like. He joined in 2018, and after a stint at Polygon, he rejoined The Verge in May 2025. I got to try Kirby Air Riders this morning at a Nintendo holiday showcase, and I wasn’t prepared for how difficult it was — and how bad I am at it. The Switch 2-exclusive racer launches November 20th, and it’s full of modes, collectibles, and new characters to play as. To be clear, there’s absolutely nothing chill about Kirby Air Riders.

Kirby Air Riders is a cute, chaotic racing game

Kirby is a uniquely wholesome Nintendo character, yet his games often have a quirky mean streak to them. They're all about letting players absorb enemies and take on some wild powers to tear through vibrant stages with reckless abandon. That's especially true with Kirby Air Riders, the long-awaited sequel to the GameCube classic racing game, Kirby Air Ride. Much like the original, it's a fast-paced racing game starring Kirby and friends as they race through visually striking locales – it also ha

Kirby’s new Switch 2 expansion adds just the right amount of challenge

So I heard you want to play Kirby on hard mode: tough bosses, tricky platforming, complicated puzzles, hidden collectibles, and maybe even punishments for failing. The Star-Crossed World expansion in Kirby and the Forgotten Land’s Switch 2 edition certainly introduces new challenges. There’s pressure from time constraints and consecutive platforming sequences, multistep puzzles, and bosses have more health, varied attacks, and phases. In Star-Crossed World, the promise of a more difficult Kirby

Nintendo's Latest Updated Switch 2 Game Has Me Hungering for More

Although the Nintendo Switch 2 is only a few months old, new games, or at least updated ones, keep emerging at a steady, slow clip. Kirby and the Forgotten Land, which was one of my favorite late-era Switch games, got an upgraded edition that's available this week. The full title, Kirby and the Forgotten Land Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World, is unwieldy in name, much like the recent Mario Party Jamboree upgrade. But I found this one a lot more worthwhile. While you don't get too

This 'Fantastic Four' Actor Is a Netflix Top 10 VIP Right Now

Each week, Netflix drops a list of the top 10 films and TV shows dominating the platform. For the week of Aug. 11, two vastly different films, both featuring Vanessa Kirby, are in the US Top 10: Netflix original Night Always Comes and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. If you consider that Kirby is also starring in Marvel's The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which is currently No. 4 at the box office, and she briefly reprised her role as White Widow in Mission: Impossible -- The Final Reckoni

‘Kirby Air Riders’ on Switch 2 Makes a Better Case for the GameCube Than Nintendo Ever Did

“I have no idea what is happening right now.” I sigh several variations of that phrase in the hour I spend playing through a sliver of Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 exclusive Kirby Air Riders. I’m tired after a full day’s work—somewhere between fried and manic—but the racing game, which director Masahiro Sakurai quipped in his Tuesday Nintendo Direct was “basically Mario Kart,” is akin to being thrown hurtling down the mouth of a kaleidoscope at 200 miles per hour. I know I won some races and ba

Kirby Air Riders launches November 20 exclusively on Switch 2

Nintendo has confirmed that Kirby Air Riders, a modern revival of the 2003 GameCube cult classic Kirby Air Ride, will be released exclusively on Switch 2 on November 20. The announcement came during a marathon 45-minute Nintendo Direct devoted entirely to the new game, hosted by Kirby's creator Masahiro Sakurai. Sakurai said he was asked to create Air Riders while still working on DLC for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate , and drafted a written proposal for the game at the request of Shinya Takahashi,

“Kirby Air Riders” Is Coming to Switch 2, and It’s “Basically Like ‘Mario Kart’”

More than two decades after Kirby Air Ride launched on GameCube, Kirby Air Riders is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on November 20. The sequel is also the first Kirby title to be directed by fan favorite Sakurai since the original. “Oh dear,” Sakurai said during the Direct. “Why is making a game so hard?” Air R
