These 8 updates would transform Google Maps into an incredible road trip companion

Andy Walker / Android Authority Many believe in the idea that you should critique what you love. If that’s true, then I must have a strong affection for Google Maps. I use this navigation app on Android and Android Auto almost daily, and each day I’m reminded of its missing features. This is particularly evident when I’m on a longer drive. Google Maps isn’t the ideal road trip companion for all intents and purposes. Sure, it gets you from A to B (eventually), estimates travel time, and provide

It’s not just you: Google Maps is down in major outage [U: Fixed]

In a rare outage, Google Maps is down and will not load as of 1 p.m. PT on Thursday. This is impacting the Android and iOS apps. The map layer itself — regardless of location — is not properly loading, with rough outlines appearing instead. In (local) areas where the map is cached, places/listings do not appear. This in turn impacts navigation/directions. Users around the world are reporting issues. The Google Maps website is not impacted. There are currently no incident reports for Google Wo

Google Maps isn't loading in some regions due to an apparent outage

Google Maps appears to be going through an outage. At least in some regions, the mobile version of Google Maps is unable to fully load its map or provide directions. Over 4,000 reports have been filed for the service on Downdetector, and as of 2:12PM ET, Google's Status Dashboard noted that the company was investigating an issue with the Maps SDK for Android and iOS, along with the Navigation SDK. On both the Android and iOS versions of Google Maps, the service was unable to fully load its map,

Apple Maps gets a ‘Chief of War’ tour guide with spots in Hawai’i and New Zealand

If you’ve been watching Chief of War on Apple TV+ and you’re anything like me, you probably spend quite a good amount of time of each episode marveling at the fantastic landscapes. Now, thanks to a new Apple Maps guide, you can take a virtual tour, or plan actual visits, to the parks, beaches, campgrounds, and even historic palaces featured in the show. Here’s how. Plan your visit to 10 historic and iconic sites As explained on the Apple TV+ X account, all you have to do is look for Chief of

Google is sitting on a gold mine of custom maps and is doing nothing with it

Andy Walker / Android Authority I recently rediscovered a Google Maps feature that I completely forgot existed, but you can’t really blame me. If you frequent travel subreddits and forums, you’ll likely be familiar with My Maps, Google’s custom map creation platform. However, if you’ve only ever experienced Google Maps on an Android phone, I’d be surprised if you’ve heard of it, unless you’ve accidentally scrolled to the bottom of the You tab. My Maps is an obscure but powerful tool for creati

COVID vaccine locations vanish from Google Maps due to supposed “technical issue”

The start of the COVID-19 pandemic is now five years in the rearview mirror, but its effects continue to reverberate. While those leading the US healthcare system have embraced conspiracy theories and junk science to justify a reduced focus on vaccines (particularly the COVID jab) many people are still seeking out immunization. Google Maps isn't a good way to find it, though. In recent days, almost all search results for COVID vaccines have vanished from Google Maps. In both the mobile app and

OSMAnd vs. Organic Maps

There's a new offline mapping program for smartphones, so I thought I'd see how it stacks up against the one I'm already using. For clarity: I'm using the F-Droid releases of both OsmAnd and Organic Maps. I believe that OsmAnd charges for map downloads if you get it from other places. Both programs work most readily with maps loaded onto the device in advance (which is why I feel I should choose—I don't want to have maps for both taking up space). Both of them run off OpenStreetMap data, adapt

Your Pixel Watch is getting true hands-free Google Maps navigation

Kaitlyn Cimino / Android Authority TL;DR Pixel Watch will now auto-open Google Maps full screen when you start walking or biking directions on your phone. Until now, Maps only appeared as a small arrow notification on your Pixel Watch that required tapping to expand. The update is part of Google’s latest Pixel Drop, which is rolling out over the coming weeks. If you’ve ever started walking or cycling directions on your phone and squinted at a tiny arrow on your wrist, this one’s for you. Goo

Here We Go is the non-Google map app I didn’t know I needed

Nathan Drescher / Android Authority Earlier this year, I started to become concerned about how much of my personal life was tied to the big tech companies, especially my Google account. And Google Maps was one of the biggest culprits. It had steadily changed from a clean and dependable navigation tool to a cluttered mess filled with ads. Worse, it sat at the heart of Google’s ecosystem and I knew I had to find a real alternative. I wanted something different. I went looking for a navigation ap

Google Maps will finally ask how you want Motion Photos handled (APK teardown)

TL;DR Motion Photos combine a still picture with a short video clip. Currently when uploading a Motion Photo to Google Maps, it only works as a still pic. The app appears to be working on support for letting users choose to upload Motion Photos as videos. Motion Photos may be one of the coolest camera options available to us that we just don’t pay nearly enough attention to, able to fuse short video clips with our still photos in order to better preserve the whole vibe of a moment. They’re gr

Google Maps is planning a little reorganization and we’ve got an early look (APK teardown)

Andy Walker / Android Authority TL;DR Google Maps developers are working on a bunch of small tweaks to the app’s interface. Some of those include a new setting menu, icons, and search UI. Place cards could also be getting a reorganization, flipping the placement of some options. This week may be all about new hardware with the introduction of the Pixel 10 series, but maybe that just means that Google’s software devs have all the more to prove, because that group has been one busy bunch. Can’t recall that café from Tuesday? Google Maps has a new feature to jog your memory (APK teardown)

Rita El Khoury / Android Authority TL;DR The You tab in Google Maps has a new section called “Your recent places.” This section shows a list of all the recent places you visited. You can sort through locations with various types of filters, save a location, share a location, and delete a location from your history. Having trouble remembering the store you went to a few days ago? Or maybe you want to share the location of a restaurant you ate at the other day. Google Maps is getting a feature

This upcoming Google Maps feature could be a game-changer for group planning (APK teardown)

Andy Walker / Android Authority TL;DR Google Maps is working on a new feature that will make it easier to share a list of search results with others. This new share feature creates a shareable list of the first ten search results from any query. This new functionality could simplify group planning, such as deciding on a restaurant, when it goes live. Google Maps is a great resource for discovering services and local businesses around you. However, there’s plenty that Google can do to improve

How to Get Offline Maps on Your iPhone in a Few Easy Steps

If you're planning a trip for Labor Day, you might plan on using your iPhone's Maps app for directions. But using the app for extended periods could eat up your monthly data. Thankfully, when Apple released iOS 17 in 2023, the tech giant brought offline maps to your iPhone. With offline maps, you can designate areas you want to download from your Maps app onto your iPhone to use in case of an emergency, or so the app doesn't wreck your cellular data. Before you start using the feature, you may b

I found a Google Maps alternative that won't track you or drain your battery - and it's free

Kerry Wan/ZDNET Every month, Google sends me a report about where I've been, and I have to say that I'm not a fan. In fact, the idea that Google is following me around, via Maps, disturbs me. That's not the only issue I have with the default Maps app. It seems every time I have to depend on the app, my Pixel 9 Pro battery gets drained faster than when using any other app. Those two issues alone are enough to make me question why I use such an app. That's why, when I heard about CoMaps, I imme

Google Maps sucks on unpaved roads, so I use this open source app instead

Andy Walker / Android Authority Google Maps was primarily designed for inner-city travel, where roads are well-marked and relatively smooth. I doubt the app’s developers envisioned users navigating gravel roads in the heartland of South Africa. So, it’s unsurprising that the app becomes far less useful once you hit the dirt. However, where Google Maps falls short, OsmAnd excels. OsmAnd is a free, open-source app on the Play Store and F-Droid. It draws data from various sources, primarily relyi

iOS 26 beta adds surprise Apple Maps feature that could prove very useful

Apple Maps has some compelling new features in iOS 26, but it seems there’s even more coming, as the beta now supports a powerful new feature that Apple never announced: natural language search with Apple Intelligence. Apple Maps gains AI-powered natural language search in iOS 26 Early last month, iOS 26 beta code revealed that Apple was working on adding natural language search to Maps. However, code leaks regularly expose features in development that may not ever ship. In this case though,

This is the Google Maps feature I really want to see

Andy Walker / Android Authority Thanks to my extremely poor sense of direction, Google Maps is an essential travel app for me — for both short trips to different parts of the city, as well as longer routes that I have no chance of memorizing. I’ve come to love the traffic estimates, alternate route options, and the ability to avoid tolls. But there’s a feature that I think Google Maps sorely needs: warning users of dangerous routes with high crime, with alternative routes suggested. Do you tr

iOS 26 code leaks new Home app feature integrated with Maps

Apple’s Home app hasn’t had any new publicized features in iOS 26 yet, but a code leak just revealed a new feature in the works that relies on Apple Maps’ new upgrades. ‘Adaptive Temperature’ could come to Home app, powered by new Maps features in iOS 26 Steve Moser, in a post on X, has shared code he discovered in the iOS 26 beta that references an in-the-works Home app feature. That feature: Adaptive Temperature. "Adaptive Temperature" hidden in iOS 26 beta Home app Just as Maps learns

Google says pick Maps or Waze in the car — here’s how I use both

Andy Walker / Android Authority Despite its litany of flaws, I love Android Auto. It makes driving more enjoyable by offering easy access to my music collection and putting important navigation information front and center. However, it does have some silly limitations that hamper the latter. Google Maps is my primary navigation platform. It’s what my Android Auto instance boots into, and I don’t necessarily have a problem with that. It’s relatively reliable for daily commutes and has an approa

Bringing a decade old bicycle navigator back to life with open source software

Published: 25-07-2025 23:37 | Author: Remy van Elst | Text only version of this article I recently found a Navman Bike 1000 in a thrift store for EUR 10. This is a bike computer, a navigation device for cyclists, made by MiTaC, the same company that makes the Mio bike computers. This Navman Bike 1000 is a rebadged Mio Cyclo 200 . It's from 2015 and as you might have guessed, no more map updates. There seem to be newer maps from 2020, but the official download tool fails. Planned Obsolescence at

Google Maps crashes keeping you from planning a route home? You’re far from alone

Andy Walker / Android Authority TL;DR Google Maps is crashing for some users when attempting to get transit directions. Other transportation methods do not appear to be affected. Not everyone on the same version of the app is experiencing the problem, though, and we’ve reached out to Google for more information. Modern navigation software is superior to paper maps for more reasons than we can count, and one great example is how well they can integrate with mass transit systems. Instead of dr

Google Maps just made controlling your music a navigation nightmare (Updated: Working on a fix)

Ryan Haines / Android Authority TL;DR Google Maps v25.28 stable and v25.29 beta have removed in-app media playback controls. The removed feature allowed easy access to play, browse suggestions, or open the default music app. The functionality still exists on iOS, and Google has confirmed through a statement that this is a bug whose fix is being worked upon. Update, July 22, 2025 (02:44 AM ET): A Google spokesperson has shared the following statement for this issue: We’re actively working to

Google Maps just made controlling your music a navigation nightmare

Ryan Haines / Android Authority TL;DR Google Maps v25.28 stable and v25.29 beta have removed in-app media playback controls. The removed feature allowed easy access to play, browse suggestions, or open the default music app. It’s unclear if the removal was intentional or just a bug, as the functionality still exists on iOS. Google Maps remains one of the best apps for Android devices, but it’s not perfect. There are plenty of ways Google can improve the Maps experience, and a good starting s
