Researchers revive the pinhole camera for next-gen infrared imaging

This article has been reviewed according to Science X's editorial process and policies . Editors have highlighted the following attributes while ensuring the content's credibility: Researchers use laser light to form a tiny "optical pinhole" inside a nonlinear crystal, which also turns the infrared image into a visible image that a traditional silicon-based camera sensor can detect. With this setup, the researchers captured clear, wide-depth images without using any lenses, even in very low lig

Does All Semiconductor Manufacturing Depend on Spruce Pine Quartz? (2024)

Here’s an idea you see spreading across the internet every so often: that all semiconductor and solar PV manufacturing depends on extremely pure quartz from the town of Spruce Pine, North Carolina. This quartz is used to make the crucibles which hold the molten silicon as it gets turned into silicon ingots, which are then cut into wafers and made into chips. The quartz needs to be very pure to prevent impurities from seeping into the silicon, and Spruce Pine is where this very pure quartz comes

Gmail gets a dedicated place to track all your purchases

An update to Gmail begins rolling out soon, readying Google's premier email app for all your upcoming holiday purchases. Gmail has been surfacing shipment tracking for some time now, but Google will now add a separate view just for remembering the things you have ordered. And if you want to buy more things, there's a new interface for that, too. Yay, capitalism. Gmail is quite good at recognizing purchase information in the form of receipts and shipping notifications. Currently, the app (and we

DreamCloud Hybrid Mattress Review: Support and Value

I’ve written numerous reviews of the DreamCloud Classic Hybrid mattress over the past six years of my mattress testing career. It was on my short list of favorites then, and its newest iteration, released in May, still is. This is no small feat, especially given the current supply-chain issues, tariffs, and price increases, all of which can affect the materials (and thus, the performance) of a mattress. Plus, I’m like the Simon Cowell of mattress world—a bed has to work really hard to impress me

Lava RGB

Although the power module includes a Saturn-style DIN connector, I don’t own a compatible cable, and prefer to use VGA cables. So for my install, I decided to add a SNES multiout port. Compared to the NESRGB, Lava RGB 2.0 is definitely a worthy contender. The palette switching OSD, and ability to easily update firmware, are improvements, and I wonder if future firmware updates might add more OSD-based options. However, one thing Lava RGB does not do is process and output audio like the NESRGB.

Using AI to perceive the universe in greater depth

Our novel Deep Loop Shaping method improves control of gravitational wave observatories, helping astronomers better understand the dynamics and formation of the universe. To help astronomers study the universe’s most powerful processes, our teams have been using AI to stabilize one of the most sensitive observation instruments ever built. In a paper published today in Science, we introduce Deep Loop Shaping, a novel AI method that will unlock next-generation gravitational-wave science. Deep Lo

It's also safe to assume that I love few things more than a great deal (and sharing them with ZDNET's readers). But shopping online

Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 514 review: The new ChromeOS sweet spot

In the last few years, I’ve felt like Chromebooks have hit a plateau. ChromeOS is a quirky but mature platform at this point, and Google has continued to add smart and useful features on a regular basis. But the hardware has felt pretty stagnant, with a few exceptions. Most Chromebooks at this point are utilitarian devices that get the job done but inspire little excitement, and I’ve found most Intel-based Chromebooks don’t get me through a day of work before the battery dies. But earlier this

Primitive tortureboard: Untangling the myths and mysteries of Dvorak and QWERTY

Marcin Wichary December 2023 / 8,000 words / 33 photos The primitive tortureboard Untangling the myths and mysteries of Dvorak and QWERTY This essay was originally published in December 2023 as sixth chapter of the book Shift Happens. 1 There weren’t many who hated QWERTY more. To his credit, there was a lot to hate. The layout seemed random, with letters strewn around without rhyme or reason. Watching someone type on it felt painful: fingers flailed wildly all over the place, common letter

Fixing an old .NET Core native library loading issue on Alpine

In this post I describe an issue I ran into at work when we were trying to test an app using Microsoft.Data.SQLite on Alpine Linux, and were running into this error: Unhandled exception. System.DllNotFoundException: Unable to load shared library 'e_sqlite3' or one of its dependencies . This post is primarily a walkthrough of the steps I took to solve the issue. I describe the problem itself, the environment in which it happened, the things we tried to isolate the issue, the eventual root cause,

Best Window Air Conditioners 2025: 11 Picks to Cool You for Years

The EcoFlow Wave 3 is not for the weak. I mean that literally, as it weighs nearly 56 pounds when attached to its 22-pound lithium battery. At 6,100 BTU cooling capacity, the Wave 3 is designed for a car, RV, tent, boat, or any space that might be either temporary or off the grid. The Wave 3 also has a slightly higher 6,800 BTU heat mode. I have a van and and a dog, so for me, the Wave 3 offers a specific type of assurance on hot or cold days. Portable doesn’t mean you can move it around a lot.

Physics of badminton's new killer spin serve

Serious badminton players are constantly exploring different techniques to give them an edge over opponents. One of the latest innovations is the spin serve, a devastatingly effective method in which a player adds a pre-spin just before the racket contacts the shuttlecock (aka the birdie). It's so effective—some have called it "impossible to return"—that the Badminton World Federation (BWF) banned the spin serve in 2023, at least until after the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. The sanction wasn
