Ahead of Google Assistant’s death, Gemini finally inherits this much-loved feature

Ryan Haines / Android Authority TL;DR Gemini has finally received another long-awaited Google Assistant feature. The chatbot can now identify songs playing nearby using the Google app’s Song Search feature. Previously, Gemini would recommend using third-party music recognition apps when asked to identify a song. Gemini lacked several Google Assistant features at launch, but steady updates from Google have brought it closer to being a comprehensive replacement for the legacy voice assistant.

Painting with Math: A Gentle Study of Raymarching (2023)

Most of my experience writing GLSL so far focused on enhancing pre-existing Three.js/React Three Fiber scenes that contain diverse geometries and materials with effects that wouldn't be achievable without shaders, such as my work with dispersion and particle effects. However, during my studies of shaders, I always found my way to Shadertoy, which contains a multitude of impressive 3D scenes featuring landscapes, clouds, fractals, and so much more, entirely implemented in GLSL. This week, Netflix's Titan: The OceanGate Submersible Disaster was the no. 2 film on Netflix's Top 10, but the documentary about the deadly 2023 Titan submersible implosion isn't the only film about the catastrophic undersea tragedy. Another, Max's Implosion: The Titanic Sub Disaster, came out in May. Both reveal the lengths that explorer and OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush went to in order

Amazon Rebuilt Alexa Using a ‘Staggering’ Amount of AI Tools

Daniel Rausch, Amazon’s vice president of Alexa and Echo, is in the midst of a major transition. More than a decade beyond the launch of Amazon’s Alexa, he’s been tasked with creating a new version of the marquee voice assistant, one that’s powered by large language models. As he put it in my interview with him, this new assistant, dubbed Alexa+, is “a complete rebuild of the architecture.” How did his team approach Amazon’s largest ever revamp of its voice assistant? They used AI to build AI,

Android may soon recommend you use an ‘optimized’ voice assistant — here’s what that really means

Mishaal Rahman / Android Authority TL;DR OEMs can now highlight specific digital assistants as “optimized” for their Android devices in the default app settings. Google says it created the feature at an OEM’s request so OEMs can recommend assistants verified to work with their first-party applications. While Google says it won’t do this on its own Pixel phones, the feature comes as the company is facing growing regulatory pressure. For many years, Google Assistant was widely seen as the best

The best instant cameras you can buy right now

Even with the ability to take excellent photos with our phones and instantly share them across the world, there’s something magical about the old-school instant camera. With just a click of a button, you can capture a moment in a photo that you can see and touch almost immediately. Images captured by an instant camera aren’t as pristine or perfect as those produced by modern digital cameras, but their soft images and imperfections are often a big part of the allure. Yet not all instant cameras

Scientists achieve 1,000-fold increase in solar electricity using ultra-thin layers

Forward-looking: A team of German researchers from Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg has unveiled a significant advancement in solar energy technology, revealing a method to dramatically increase the amount of electricity certain materials can generate when exposed to light. Their approach involves stacking ultra-thin layers of different crystals in a precise sequence, resulting in a solar absorber that far outperforms traditional materials. At the core of this discovery, published in S

Best Organic Mattresses (2025): Certified Nontoxic, Natural Sleep

Certified organic mattresses are made of natural, organic materials that have been independently tested to meet standards. Not all “organic”mattresses are equal though. We’ve narrowed our search by sticking with companies that have certifications like the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) and ‌Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). GOLS covers latex, which has a pretty complex manufacturing process that is not always the healthiest, but GOLS ensures that the finished results is as free of ha

The Future of ‘Star Wars’ May Not Be as Connected as We Expect

One of the best, and worst, things about Star Wars in recent years is just how connected everything has been. It meant characters who may have at first seemed tangential, like Cassian Andor in Rogue One, could be greatly expanded in something like Andor. It also meant audiences who had never watched an animated show like Clone Wars or Rebels might be left confused with the stories in something like Ahsoka. In those cases and others, there always seemed to be some kind of guardrails on what was p

MagSafe Monday: ArmorGo Magnetic Wallet Stand adds a solid kickstand and RFID protection in a slim design

MagSafe accessories continue to be a mix of great ideas and daily annoyances, but I keep trying them all. I’ve tried enough wallets to fill a drawer in my desk, and most of them get something right, but miss on a few minor things. Recently, I’ve been trying some new wallets that do more than hold credit cards. That’s what caught my eye with the BENKS ArmorGo Magnetic Wallet Stand, and I’ve been using it for the past few weeks. Some of my favorite gear Abode Home Security System Abode is the bes

Your Next Instant Pot Might Be Made by Donald Trump

Donald Trump sells everything from Trump-branded Bibles to MAGA sneakers, as the billionaire hustler profits from the presidency in a way that no other U.S. leader has ever attempted. And it looks like we can add a few more products to the list today, including a MAGA Instant Pot, if you can believe it. The new Instant Pot is being dubbed the 45/47 Collaboration, according to a new report from Semafor, a reference to Trump being both the 45th and 47th president of the United States. It’s not cl

DARPA program sets distance record for power beaming

In a series of recent tests in New Mexico, the Persistent Optical Wireless Energy Relay (POWER) program achieved several new records for transmitting power over distance. The team recorded more than 800 watts of power delivered during a 30-second transmission from a laser 8.6 kilometers (5.3 miles) away. Over the course of the test campaign, more than a megajoule of energy was transferred. Previously, the greatest reported distance records for an appreciable amount of optical power (>1 microwat

Tanks, guns and face-painting

Of all the jarring things I’ve witnessed on the National Mall, nothing will beat the image of the first thing I saw after I cleared security at the Army festival: a child, sitting at the controls of an M119A3 Howitzer, being instructed by a soldier on how to aim it, as his red-hatted parents took a photo with the Washington Monument in the background. The primary stated reason for the Grand Military Parade is to celebrate the US Army’s 250th birthday. The second stated reason is to use the even

Another one for the graveyard: Google to kill Instant Apps in December

Apps used to be the measure of a mobile platform's worth, with Apple and Google dueling over who could list the most items in their respective stores. Today, the numbers don't matter as much—there are enough apps, and Google's attempt to replace parts of the web with apps is going away. Instant Apps, a feature that debuted in 2017, will reportedly be scrapped in December 2025. In its place, you'll just have to use the Internet. Developer Leon Omelan spotted this news buried in the latest Canary

Google is shutting down Android Instant Apps over ‘low’ usage

is a news editor with over a decade’s experience in journalism. He previously worked at Android Police and Tech Advisor. Google has confirmed that it plans to shut down Android’s Instant Apps later this year, attributing the decision to “low” usage of the functionality. Instant Apps were introduced in 2017, and allow developers to create mini versions of Android apps that load, well, instantly. Users can try apps and demo games from the click of a link, without having to fully install them. Th

Apple's AI-infused Siri may not show up until spring 2026

The new version of Siri that was demoed alongside Apple Intelligence might not be released until Spring 2026, Bloomberg reports. Apple officially delayed Siri's release to some time "in the coming year" back in March. The new Siri could be included in a planned iOS 26.4 update next year, which Bloomberg writes will likely arrive in March. Apple announced the smarter and more personal version of Siri at WWDC 2024 over a year ago now, and nearly two years before this hypothetical Spring 2026 rele

How Steve Jobs Wrote the Greatest Commencement Speech Ever

In early June 2005, Steve Jobs emailed his friend Michael Hawley a draft of a speech he had agreed to deliver to Stanford University’s graduating class in a few days. “It’s embarrassing,” he wrote. “I'm just not good at this sort of speech. I never do it. I'll send you something, but please don't puke.” The notes that he sent contained the bones of what would become one of the most famous commencement addresses of all time. It has been viewed over 120 million times and is quoted to this day. Pr
