AirPods live translation blocked for EU users with EU Apple accounts

Apple's new Live Translation feature for AirPods will be off-limits to millions of European users when it arrives next week, with strict EU regulations likely holding back its rollout. Apple says on its feature availability webpage that "Apple Intelligence: Live Translation with AirPods" won't be available if both the user is physically in the EU and their Apple Account region is in the EU. Apple doesn't give a reason for the restriction, but legal and regulatory pressures seem the most plaus

‘Foundation’ Will Return for Season 4

As sci-fi nerds, we here at io9 love Foundation, even if the show hasn’t gotten the mainstream buzz of certain other Apple TV+ series. It’s hardly a Severance-level blockbuster. But as the current third season of the Asimov adaptation prepares to air its finale, there’s an excellent bit of news from the streamer: Foundation will return for a fourth season. We can only assume that means cliffhangers galore in tomorrow’s finale, as is Foundation tradition—but we’re so happy with the announcement,

The FTC is investigating companies that make AI companion chatbots

The Federal Trade Commission is making a formal inquiry into companies that provide AI chatbots that can act as companions. The investigation isn't tied to any kind of regulatory action as of yet, but does aim to reveal how companies "measure, test, and monitor potentially negative impacts of this technology on children and teens." Seven companies are being asked to participate in the FTC's investigation: Google's parent company Alphabet, Character Technologies (the creator of Character.AI), Me

Conway's Game of Life, but musical

Neuroscience research shows our brains respond to music in fundamental ways that precede language development 1. And what fascinates me is how naturally music

New Study Questions a Major Assumption About the Fall of the Roman Empire

The period after the Roman Empire abandoned Britain has long been known as the “Dark Ages” for a reason. Scholars believed that after the Romans left, local industries collapsed and effectively all progress ceased for centuries. Britain, they theorized, was plunged into a cultural and economic abyss with their departure. But for some time, a growing body of evidence has challenged this narrative. And in a new study published today in the journal Antiquity, researchers investigate the assumption

This Secret iPhone Feature Could Improve Your Call Quality

Apple is set to release iOS 26 on Sept. 15, and it will bring call screening and more to your iPhone then. But you don't need the latest iOS update to use Voice Isolation, an iPhone feature that can make your calls clearer for the person you're talking with. Apple introduced Voice Isolation in 2023 with iOS 16.4. The tech company added the feature, alongside Wide Spectrum, to FaceTime calls with iOS 15 in 2021, but only Voice Isolation is available for regular phone calls at this time. When Vo

New black hole merger bolsters Hawking area theorem

Back in 1971, the late physicist Stephen Hawking made an intriguing prediction: The total surface area of a black hole cannot decrease, only increase or remain stable. So if two black holes combine, the newly formed black hole will have a larger surface area. This became known as Hawking's area theorem. Analysis of the gravitational signal from a black hole merger detected in January provides the best observational evidence to date in support of Hawking's theorem, according to a new paper publis

NASA found clues of life on Mars, but budget cuts threaten future missions

An exciting discovery on Mars is being overshadowed by turmoil at NASA, with budget cuts threatening to destroy a scientific legacy that has been built over decades. Yesterday, the agency shared a finding, published in Nature, of potential biosignatures identified by the Mars Perseverance rover in a 3.5 billion-year-old rock. “This very well could be the clearest sign of life that we’ve ever found on Mars,” said Transportation Secretary and Acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy in a press confe

Senators demand ICE cease use of facial recognition app

Senators Edward J. Markey, Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley sent a letter Thursday to Acting US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Todd Lyons urging the agency to stop using “Mobile Fortify,” a smartphone app that uses biometric identification, including facial recognition. The lawmakers said facial recognition remains unreliable and warned that real-time surveillance could have a chilling effect on constitutionally protected activities. "As studies have shown, when individuals believ

NT OS Kernel Information Disclosure Vulnerability

Reading Time: 4 minutes Introduction Microsoft mitigated many traditional kernel information leaks starting with Windows 11/Windows Server 2022 24H2, including calls such as NtQuerySystemInformation() (when used with the SystemModuleInformation class), by suppressing kernel base addresses unless the caller had the SeDebugPrivilege , typically reserved for administrative processes. That change effectively neutered one of the most accessible KASLR bypass techniques, and, without knowledge of the

Study Directly Links Emissions from Fossil Fuel Producers to Devastating Heatwaves

A new study directly links hundreds of major heatwaves since 2000 to the emissions from fossil fuel and cement producers. Among its fundings, the researchers conclude that as many as a quarter of all heatwaves since the start of this century would have been “virtually impossible” without emissions from any of the world’s 14 largest fossil fuel and cement producers. The study, published Wednesday in the journal Nature, shows that greenhouse gas emissions from 180 of the world’s biggest cement, o

The Buyer’s Guide to Browser Extension Management

While most enterprises lock down endpoints, harden networks, and scan for vulnerabilities, one of the riskiest vectors often slips through unmonitored: browser extensions. These small, user-installed applications can execute privileged code, access sensitive DOM elements, intercept network requests, and even exfiltrate data, all within the context of enterprise-approved browsers. Keep Aware’s new Buyer’s Guide to Browser Extension Management explores how security and IT leaders can achieve comp

House Bill Could Rescue Some of NASA’s Most Important Space Projects

The U.S. House Appropriations Committee on Wednesday expressed support for several NASA missions that currently sit on the chopping block as a result of the administration’s 2026 budget proposal. While the committee did not specifically allocate more money to these missions, the support breathes new life into planetary science efforts that have been years in the making. The House committee met to discuss the commerce, justice, and science budget bill, which allocates funding to federal agencies

There’s bad news for AirPods Live Translation in EU countries

We first spotted that AirPods Live translation was coming a month before the announcement. Initial language support is listed as English, French, German, Portuguese (Brazil), and Spanish – with four more languages coming later this year. But while European languages are supported, you won’t necessarily be able to take advantage of that if you are within one of the countries in which they’re spoken … We’d already seen some mixed news. On the plus side, the feature isn’t exclusive to the new Air

Live Translation with AirPods won't come to EU-based Apple users

Europe, the bloc with 24 official languages and 287 spoken in total, won't get Apple's Live Translation with AirPods feature for now. "Live Translation with AirPods is not available if you are in the EU and your Apple Account Country or Region is also in the EU," the company said on its iOS feature availability page. No reason was given, but it may have to do with the EU's strict rules around artificial intelligence and how it impacts privacy. If that's the case, Apple may be waiting for the EU

Brussels faces privacy crossroads over encryption backdoors

Europe, long seen as a bastion of privacy and digital rights, will debate this week whether to enforce surveillance on citizens' devices. Representatives from member states will meet on Friday to consider legislation critics call Chat Control, aka "laying down rules to prevent and combat child sexual abuse," which seeks to require ISPs or messaging app providers to scan user content or backdoor encryption so that intelligence agencies can do it themselves. It's the latest attempt in a three-yea

The New York Times Mini Crossword Is Now Paywalled: Here's One Way to Play

The New York Times Mini Crossword is a fun and simple younger sibling to the newspaper's legendary regular daily crossword. The Mini Crossword (we publish the answers daily) usually has only about six across-clues and six down-clues, and you can finish it in less than a minute if all goes well. It makes me feel smart, unlike the big crossword, which sometimes makes me throw things. But in late August, some Mini Crossword players were met with a paywall. Going forward, anyone who doesn't pay fo

Image generation has long been one of the most compelling and entertaining use cases for AI. The widespread Studio

Poll: Who’s got the best color options, iPhone 17 or Pixel 10?

Rita El Khoury / Android Authority For as nice as it can be to feel safe and sound by wrapping your expensive new smartphone tightly in a protective case, there’s also a lot to be said for living a little dangerously and showing off the actual hardware — especially when it’s available in some really appealing colors.
