Salesloft says Drift customer data thefts linked to March GitHub account hack

Salesloft said a breach of its GitHub account in March allowed hackers to steal authentication tokens that were later used in a mass-hack targeting several of its big tech customers. Citing an investigation by Google’s incident response unit Mandiant, Salesloft said on its data breach page that the as-yet-unnamed hackers accessed Salesloft’s GitHub account and performed reconnaissance activities from March until June, which allowed them to download “content from multiple repositories, add a gue

Hackers hijack npm packages with 2 billion weekly downloads in supply chain attack

One of the package maintainers whose accounts were hijacked in this supply-chain attack confirmed the incident earlier today, stating that he was aware of the compromise and adding that the phishing email came from support [at] npmjs [dot] help, a domain that hosts a website imp

Scientists Turned Plastic Trash Into a Material That Eats Carbon

Experts estimate that the global production and disposal of plastics emits nearly 2 billion tons of greenhouse gases per year. The vast majority of these materials end up in landfills, but what if we could repurpose some of that waste to remove planet-warming emissions from the atmosphere? A team of researchers in Denmark has discovered a way to do just that. In a new study, published September 5 in the journal Science Advances, they transformed decomposed #1 plastic—also known as PET (polyethy

Google wants Gemini to keep the conversation going, and here’s how it’s going to do it

Mishaal Rahman / Android Authority TL;DR Google is testing a feature within Gemini that suggests follow-up questions. The suggestion prompts help users explore topics and engage in in-depth conversations to get more out of their AI interactions. The feature seems to be a limited test for now. If you’re old enough to have used search engines before their AI-fication, you’re most likely using your AI digital assistant more like a search engine and less like a digital assistant. That means more

Apple Calendar spam on the rise again, mostly crypto scams

We first saw Apple Calendar spam almost a decade ago, when it hit such levels that the iPhone maker issued an apology and said that it was blocking suspicious senders. We’ve seen the problem re-emerge several times since then, with Apple even publishing a YouTube video on how to remove it. Despite all of these efforts, however, it seems to be spiking again … Spammers send calendar invitations containing links, most of them taking the form of cryptocurrency scams. Several of us at 9to5Mac have

Meet the Ethiopian entrepreneur who is reinventing ammonia production

Haile, now at Northwestern University, recalls thinking that Abate was particularly eager. As a visible Ethiopian scientist, she gets a lot of email requests, but his stood out. “No obstacle was going to stand in his way,” she says. It was risky to take on a young student with no research experience who’d only been in the US for a year, but she offered him a spot in her lab. Abate spent the summer working on materials for use in solid oxide fuel cells. He returned for the following summer, then

2025 Innovator of the Year: Sneha Goenka for developing an ultra-fast sequencing technology

Goenka saw a better way: Build a real-time system that could “stream” the sequencing data, analyzing it as it was being generated, like streaming a film on Netflix rather than downloading it to watch later. To do this, she designed a cloud computing architecture to pull in more processing power. Goenka’s first challenge was to increase the speed at which her team could upload the raw data for processing, by streamlining the requests between the sequencer and the cloud to avoid unnecessary “chat

7 Vitamins That Could Promote Hair Growth and Give You Long Locks

When you brush or wash your hair, it's perfectly normal to lose a few strands, as people naturally lose 50 to 100 hairs per day. However, if you're dealing with something more serious, you may be one of 80 million people in the US affected by hair loss or alopecia, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians. Though hair loss is most commonly a hereditary condition, it can also be caused by underlying health conditions such as a vitamin deficiency. That's why it's important to ensure

ChatGPT makes Projects feature free, adds a toggle to split chat

ChatGPT is getting two big changes. First, the Projects feature is now free. Second, you can now create new conversations from existing conversations. Projects have been around for months now, but they're now rolling out to everyone, including those with a free plan. With Projects, you can create "workspaces" with ChatGPT and organise chats, files and custom instructions for a specific project. Right now, when you interact with ChatGPT, it tries to remember everything, which isn't really grea

How many dimensions is this?

In the past couple of weeks, I’ve been posting about seemingly simple mathematical problems that defy intuition, and where the answers we find on the internet turn out to be shallow or hard to parse. For a taste, you might enjoy the articles on Gödel’s beavers or on infinite decimals. Today, let’s continue by asking a simple question: how many dimensions does a line have? A trained mathematician might blurt out an answer involving vector spaces or open set coverings, but there’s no fun in that.

Are bad incentives to blame for AI hallucinations?

A new research paper from OpenAI asks why large language models like GPT-5 and chatbots like ChatGPT still hallucinate, and whether anything can be done to reduce those hallucinations. In a blog post summarizing the paper, OpenAI defines hallucinations as “plausible but false statements generated by language models,” and it acknowledges that despite improvements, hallucinations “remain a fundamental challenge for all large language models” — one that will never be completely eliminated. To ill

Silksong reviews drop to mostly negative for Chinese players due to confusing translations

For most Hollow Knight: Silksong players, the combat is challenging and the boss fights are punishing. However, there's another layer of complexity for anyone playing the sequel in Simplified Chinese: the bizarre translations. On its Steam store page, Silksong currently sits at a "Mostly Positive" rating across reviews in all languages. Once you filter for the Simplified Chinese reviews, the Metroidvania-style game plummets to "Mostly Negative." There are plenty of complaints about Silksong bei

Sunday Night Football: How to Watch Ravens vs. Bills Tonight

The first Sunday Night Football game of the season is the best matchup of week 1, with the Bills hosting the Ravens tonight in Buffalo. Both teams are again among the favorites in the AFC to get to the Super Bowl, and each has an MVP QB. Josh Allen of the Bills won the award last season, and Baltimore's Lamar Jackson earned the honor the season before that. The Bills knocked the Ravens out the playoffs last year, so tonight gives the Ravens a chance to start the new season off by exacting reven

A robot walks on water thanks to evolution's solution

Robots can serve pizza, crawl over alien planets, swim like octopuses and jellyfish, cosplay as humans, and even perform surgery. But can they walk on water? Rhagobot isn’t exactly the first thing that comes to mind at the mention of a robot. Inspired by Rhagovelia water striders, semiaquatic insects also known as ripple bugs, these tiny bots can glide across rushing streams because of the robotization of an evolutionary adaptation. Rhagovelia (as opposed to other species of water striders) ha

Table of Contents Introduction The computational neuroscience literature abounds with models of individual brain structures, such as the hippocampus, basal ganglia, thalamus, and various cortical areas — from visual to prefrontal. These models typically aim to explain specific functions attributed to each structure. For instance, the basal ganglia are often modeled in the context of decision-making, while the hippocampus is associated with episodic memory and spatial navigation through place c
