Thomas Fuller/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images Wary of the US government and tech companies, the European Union (EU) has seen a surge in support for open source and Linux. In the last few months, local EU governments, including the city of Lyon in France, the German state of Schleswig-Holstein, and Denmark, have begun their move to Linux and open-source software from Microsoft Windows and Office. Now, Luxembourg-based European open-source powerhouse SUSE is offering extensive support to

The Army Is Giving Up on War Horses

The U.S. military is finally done horsing around. According to a report from Task and Purpose, the Department of Defense is significantly cutting back on funding for its Military Working Equid program, and it plans to put an end to almost all horse-related operations. Apparently, steeds are no longer fit for modern warfare in the eyes of some folks at the Pentagon. Per the report, the Army will be redirecting $2 million that currently gets funneled into the Military Working Equid program to pro

Springer Nature book on machine learning is full of made-up citations

Would you pay $169 for an introductory ebook on machine learning with citations that appear to be made up? If not, you might want to pass on purchasing Mastering Machine Learning: From Basics to Advanced, published by Springer Nature in April. Based on a tip from a reader, we checked 18 of the 46 citations in the book. Two-thirds of them either did not exist or had substantial errors. And three researchers cited in the book confirmed the works they supposedly authored were fake or the citation

European VC breaks taboo by investing in pure defense tech from Ukraine’s war zones

Defense tech has gone from a no-go zone for VCs to a hot investment sector. However, dual use — meaning that the technology must also have civilian applications — is still a requirement for most of them, including the NATO Innovation Fund. Estonian VC firm Darkstar breaks from this trend by investing in purely military applications, with the goal of helping rearm Europe using combat-proven solutions emerging from Ukraine. “This is very critical, not only today but for the next 10 years,” said i

Surfing on a Matchbox (1999)

It is one tenth the size of a Palm Pilot and dwarfed by a typical desktop computer, which is 3,000 times larger. The matchbox-sized server was built from standard components by Professor Vaughan Pratt, a computer scientist at Stanford University, California. "It's basically a powerful little computer and we could have set it up for a number of different uses," he said. "But, because most people think of servers as mysterious boxes, located in dark basements, I thought making it into a web serv

As a user, I love them. Every year I celebrate Settings Day: a day when I take a look at the options and toggles in all the apps I use. I do this out of curiosity – what was added since the last time I looked? – but also because I love this way of getting to know software: peeking

The Entire Run of ‘Squid Game’ Is Currently Dominating Netflix Ratings

Squid Game‘s three seasons in order of fan preference? Season one was easily the best. Season two brought mixed results. And season three is nobody’s favorite. FTC’s click-to-cancel rule has been struck down by federal judges at the eleventh hour

In 2024, the FTC was set to implement the "click to cancel" rule, which would have placed requirements on companies to be forthright about the terms and conditions and exit options for their subscriptions. Since that time, the agency has become a less independent part of the executive branch and in May, it delayed enforcing some parts of this rule to July 14. Today, the entire plan appears to be dead in the water after judges in the US Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals decided to vacate the rule.

New Android TapTrap attack fools users with invisible UI trick

Unlike traditional, overlay-based tapjacking, TapTrap attacks work even with zero-permission apps to launch a harmless transparent activity on top of a malicious one, a behavior that remains unmitigated in Android 15 and 16.
