I made a chair I made possibly the simplest chair from an instructable I found. Uses one 8-foot 2"x12" and some very basic cuts. It didn't take long, even when the truly incorrect tools of only a circular saw and an oscillating multitool. I sealed up the ends using end cut sealer and called it a day. It works great and honestly I kind of like it better than a lot of my other chairs.

Hacker News was written in the Arc lisp dialect, a dialect created by Paul Graham. Arc was implemented on top of Racket, but that has now changed. HN runs on top of SBCL since a few months. But why? For performance reasons. I recently noticed that Hacker News no longer uses paging for long threads. In the past, when a discussion grew large, we had to click “More” to load the next page of comments, and dang would occasionally post helpful tips to remind us about this feature. Was there an annou

Billionaire Elon Musk made a bafflingly childish appearance this week at Bloomberg's Qatar Economic Forum. While being asked some hard — but entirely fair — questions by UK broadcaster Mishal Husain, covering topics such as his highly questionable work at the so-called Department of Government Efficiency, the massive hits Tesla has taken as a result, and the glaring conflict of interests facing his space venture SpaceX, Musk appeared to be completely unprepared. At multiple points during the i

Cheese connoisseurs are no doubt familiar with a particular kind of semi-hard Swiss cheese called "Tête de Moine." Rather than spreading or slicing the cheese, Tête de Moine is usually served by scraping the top of the cheese wheel in a circular motion using a specialized tool called a Girolle. This produces elegant thin shavings known as rosettes, since they resemble a frilly flower. The method is both aesthetically pleasing and serves to enhance the aromas and mouth feel of the cheese, accord

Chronic asthma led Celia and Mamaine to finishing school, and a dawning cosmopolitanism, in the Swiss Alps. They loved music and languages and hoped to attend university (one of their final joint undertakings was the study of ancient Greek) but instead, cursed with good looks, were pressed to come out for two seasons as debutantes in taffeta gowns. There they met a fellow society skeptic, Jessica Mitford, as well as Dick Wyndham, a 20-years-older dashing character at the center of the Bright You

A starry sky can be stunning—even inside a hospital emergency room. But instead of celestial bodies sparkling in the night, doctors in South Korea were gazing at bright brain lesions punctuating a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan. The resulting pattern, called a "starry sky," meant that their 57-year-old patient had a dangerous form of tuberculosis. The doctors report the case in this week's issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. The man had previously been treated for the infectio

Seven-hundred million years ago, Earth was a frozen, white sphere, its rocky surface buried kilometers under ice. Despite the barren landscape, the evolution of complex life in the oceans was about to pick up steam. New research published this week in Geology suggests that the two realms were more connected than previously thought. As massive glaciers scratched and scarred Earth’s rocky surface, they freed less-common minerals, which were later flushed into the seas as the ice melted into giant

The catalyst has two components. The first, a mineral called a zeolite, converts methane to methanol. The second, a natural enzyme called alcohol oxidase, converts the methanol to formaldehyde. With the addition of urea, a nitrogen-containing molecule found in urine, the formaldehyde can be turned into a polymer used in particleboard, textiles, and other products. The researchers say this catalyst could act to seal cracks in pipes transporting natural gas, a common source of methane leakage. It
