SpaceX to buy 800 MHz low-band spectrum from Grain Management for Starlink Mobile

SpaceX agreed to purchase up to 14 megahertz of nationwide low-band spectrum in the 800 MHz range from Grain Management, which had acquired the licenses from T-Mobile as part of a Sprint merger condition. The deal adds to SpaceX's earlier $17 billion purchase of 65 MHz of mid-band spectrum from EchoStar, approved by the FCC in May 2026. SpaceX also recently won approval to launch 15,000 satellites for an upgraded Starlink Mobile service.

Essay argues the 'ideas are getting harder to find' thesis is wrong

A researcher pushes back on the popular claim—voiced by commentators like Scott Alexander and Holden Karnofsky and researcher Dean Keith Simonton—that scientific low-hanging fruit has been exhausted and discovery is inevitably slowing. The author, prompted by a discouraged research assistant, argues this view is mistaken and discourages people from pursuing original research.

Carrier-Explode 2.0 launches with decoded phone carrier settings database

A Show HN post introduces version 2.0 of carrier-explode, a tool that extracts and decodes carrier configuration settings from iPhone, Pixel and Galaxy firmware. Users can look up APNs, VoLTE, Wi-Fi Calling and 5G settings per carrier, compare two versions or carriers side by side, and see differences between firmware builds. The project offers data via an API in JSON format or as a daily CC0-licensed dataset, with documentation in its wiki.

According to the indictment, MonsterCloud instead secretly paid hackers a much smaller sum to obtain decryption keys, while telling clients it had cracked the encryption itself.

Linus Torvalds says he relies on AI tools to aid his Linux programming work

At Open Source Summit Europe, Linux creator Linus Torvalds told Dirk Hohndel that he enjoys using AI as a programming tool, particularly for tasks he is less skilled at himself. He cautioned that AI should be used carefully for serious kernel work, noting he mainly acts as a maintainer rather than writing core code. Torvalds also said AI can help new developers rediscover the enjoyment of programming and has become useful for finding and fixing bugs in the Linux kernel.

National Design Studio open-sources Rampart, a browser-based PII redaction tool

National Design Studio released Rampart, an open-source system that detects and strips personal information from text before it leaves a user's device. It runs entirely in the browser, combining regex-based rules for structured data like Social Security numbers with the MiniLM machine learning model for names and addresses, aiming to complete the process in milliseconds.
