William Gibson Reads Neuromancer (2004)

William Gibson Reads Neuromancer The author Ray Bradbury is one of the early science fiction authors that moved science fiction into a literary form. As a writer Bradbury constructs beautifully written stories and novels. Bradbury's writing is in stark contrast to Bradbury as a speaker. The first time I heard Ray Bradbury speak was at the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) yearly conference in Los Angeles in the 1980s. Hearing Bradbury speak is an almost painful experience. When Your Father Is a Magician, What Do You Believe? A childhood spent under the spell of sleight-of-hand taught me skepticism, curiosity, and the habit of looking beneath appearances. Folks, we have the best π

In the past couple of months, I published a number of articles on recreational math. I did my best to keep them accessible and fun, but my goal was usually to shed light at deeper mathematical truths. For example, the discussion of 0.999… = 1 served as a springboard to highlight some of the subtler properties of real numbers and the different meanings of infinity. Today, I have no agenda. This article exists because I discovered a somewhat obscure paper that says something unexpected and cool.

Razer BlackShark V3 Pro Review: High-End Gaming Audio

Despite including Bluetooth and ANC, I don't think of this at the type of do-everything headset you might replace noise-canceling headphones with, and not just because the person next to you will wonder if you're secretly talking to the pilots. These are so bulky and obviously for gaming that you probably don't want to wear them outside the house. You'd certainly get some weird looks walking the dog or working from your local coffee shop. Over 100 ships have sailed with fake insurance from the Norwegian Ro Marine

All large ships must have insurance, and Ro Marine has provided this in a big way. The Norwegian company did not have permission to sell insurance but did it anyway — to clients worldwide. In March, we reported how select ships used false papers to deceive inspectors in NATO countries. Now, NRK and Dossier Center can reveal how extensive and global the fraud was: over 100 ships have sailed with illegitimate insurance documents from Ro Marine. “It's very serious and unusual that such a seriou

Performance-focused forks of styled-components

Your React app might be 40% slower on first render than it needs to be. Not because you wrote bad code. Not because React is slow. But because styled-components never implemented React 18's useInsertionEffect hook: a feature specifically designed to solve CSS-in-JS performance problems. While React 18 shipped in March 2022 with this optimization path, styled-components remained on React 17 patterns, injecting styles during render instead of between render and layout. This creates a performanc

iPhone 17, iPhone Air, AirPods Pro 3, and Apple Watch Series 11 event reactions

Benjamin and Chance react to the September Apple event, with opinions in keynote order. Chance was there in person, so that includes some early hands-on thoughts of these new devices. That includes Apple’s unveiling of the new AirPods Pro 3, Apple Watch Series 11, iPhone 17, iPhone Air and the unmistakably orange iPhone 17 Pro series. And in Happy Hour Plus, the pair talk about what products they are buying from this week’s announcements, and some more on Chance’s experience at Apple Park. Subs

How Palantir is mapping the nation’s data

When the U.S. government signs contracts with private technology companies, the fine print rarely reaches the public. Palantir Technologies, however, has attracted more and more attention over the past decade because of the size and scope of its contracts with the government. Palantir’s two main platforms are Foundry and Gotham. Each does different things. Foundry is used by corporations in the private sector to help with global operations. Gotham is marketed as an “operating system for global

AirPods Pro 3 Hands-On: All the Upgrades Seem to Check Out (So Far)

Whereas the Apple Watch SE 3, Series 11, and Watch Ultra 3 are pretty much internal spec bumps compared to the previous generations of those respective smartwatches, the AirPods Pro 3 wireless earbuds are actually reengineered inside and out, but you’ll have to look closely to spot the changes. The charging case also ditches its physical pairing button. After Tuesday’s “Awe Dropping” Apple Event, where Tim Cook and company announced the remarkably thin iPhone Air, feature-stuffed iPhone 17 Pros

New VMScape attack breaks guest-host isolation on AMD, Intel CPUs

A new Spectre-like attack dubbed VMScape allows a malicious virtual machine (VM) to leak cryptographic keys from an unmodified QEMU hypervisor process running on modern AMD or Intel CPUs. The attack breaks the isolation between VMs and the cloud hypervisor, bypassing existing Spectre mitigations and threatening to leak sensitive data by leveraging speculative execution. The researchers highlight that VMScape does not require compromising the host and works on unmodified virtualization software

France says Apple notified victims of new spyware attacks

In Brief Apple has notified a number of individuals that their devices were targeted in a spyware campaign, according to the French government. France’s national cybersecurity response unit said on Thursday that it was aware that Apple on September 3 sent a new notification to affected customers whose Apple devices may have been hacked. The cybersecurity unit said receiving a threat notification means that at least one of the devices linked to a customer’s iCloud account “has been targeted an

Partnering with generative AI in the finance function

Generative AI is also showing promise in functions like treasury, with use cases including cash, revenue, and liquidity forecasting and management, as well as automating contracts and investment analysis. However, challenges still remain for generative AI to contribute to forecasting due to the mathematical limitations of LLMs. Regardless, Deloitte’s analysis of its 2024 State of Generative AI in the Enterprise survey found that one-fifth (19%) of finance organizations have already adopted gener

Status Audio Pro X Review: The Best High-End Earbuds?

Never heard of Status Audio? I don’t blame you. The New York City-based company has been essentially operating under the radar ever since founder James Bertuzzi launched its first product, the wired CB-1 headphones, in 2016. Several wireless headphones followed, and Status eventually created two wireless earbuds, the Between Pro ($169) in 2021 and Between 3ANC ($249) in 2023. They were both well received and proved popular with buyers, perhaps helped by their quirky yet super-comfy square shape

Universal Executive Regrets Most Hilarious, Perfect Part of ‘Fast and Furious’ Franchise

Before the abysmal mess that was Fast X, the ninth Fast and Furious film, F9, did the most insane thing imaginable. After literal years and years of joking about it, F9 actually sent characters to space. It was Ludacris (literally and figuratively), it was hilarious, and it was wonderful. But now, looking back, one of Universal Studios’ most powerful executives regrets it. “I’m sorry that we sent them into space,” Donna Langley, the Chief Content Officer for NBCUniversal Studio Group, said rece

Top Democrat Calls for Congressional Probe Into Ties Between Jeffrey Epstein and Peter Thiel

The Jeffrey Epstein scandal continues to plague the Trump administration, and on Wednesday, a prominent Democratic senator called for Congress to investigate the financial ties between the dead sex criminal and a host of financial organizations and people, including tech billionaire Peter Thiel. Much of the debate about the “Epstein files” has centered around what records the Justice Department may have on his illicit sex crimes but, according to Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Oregon), the more important fi
