New York State wants more nuclear power in a big way

New York governor Kathy Hochul announced Monday that her state will host a large new nuclear power plant designed to generate at least 1 gigawatt of electricity. “If you take nuclear off the table, you have to burn more fossil fuels,” Hochul said at a press conference. “That’s not going to work for us here in New York.” The governor is directing the New York Power Authority (NYPA), which owns and operates two dozen power plants — mostly dams and gas turbines — to develop the new facility. It’s a Chromebook thing: Hands-on with new ChromeOS AI features

Ryan Haines / Android Authority As an elder member of Gen-Z, every screen in my life has its purpose. My small screen (my phone) is there for personal communication, ordering food, and mindlessly scrolling memes on the internet. My big screen (my TV) takes on the role of in-home entertainment, whether it’s a giant Spotify hub, a way to keep up with the Club World Cup, or endlessly streaming reruns of Letterkenny. Left in the mushy middle between the two, however, is room for a medium screen, l

The Download: the Vera C. Rubin Observatory’s first pictures, and reframing privacy

The first spectacular images taken by the Vera C. Rubin Observatory have been released for the world to peruse: a panoply of iridescent galaxies and shimmering nebulas. Much has been written about the observatory’s grand promise: to revolutionize our understanding of the cosmos by revealing a once-hidden population of far-flung galaxies, erupting stars, interstellar objects, and elusive planets. And thanks to its unparalleled technical prowess, few doubted its ability to make good on that. Bu

How a grad student got LHC data to play nice with quantum interference

Measurements at the Large Hadron Collider have been stymied by one of the most central phenomena of the quantum world. But now, a young researcher has championed a new method to solve the problem using deep neural networks. The Large Hadron Collider is one of the biggest experiments in history, but it’s also one of the hardest to interpret. Unlike seeing an image of a star in a telescope, saying anything at all about the data that comes out of the LHC requires careful statistical modeling. “If

Long-Dead NASA Satellite Suddenly Lets Out Epic Blast of Energy

NASA's experimental Relay 2 satellite had been dead in the sky since 1967 — until last summer, when it emitted a super-short and very powerful burst of energy out of nowhere. In an interview with New Scientist, one of the researchers from Australia's Curtin University who discovered the strange pulse coming off the dead communications satellite described his shock at finding the nearby source of that nanosecond-long energy blast. Curtin astronomer Clancy James and his team had been using the A

Texas will require permits for self-driving cars starting in September

Starting September 1, fully autonomous cars will require a permit to operate in Texas. This new restriction comes after the state's governor, Greg Abbott, signed into law the SB 2807 bill that requires authorization from the state's Department of Motor Vehicles for self-driving cars on public streets without human interaction. The signing of the new law coincides with Tesla's launch of its robotaxi service in Austin today where invited guests got to ride in fully autonomous Model Ys. While the

European leaders worry they’re too reliant on U.S. tech

In Brief European governments may be reconsidering their use of American technology and services, according to a new report in The New York Times. The flashpoint seems to come after President Donald Trump sanctioned Karim Khan, the chief prosecutor at the International Criminal Court, over the ICC’s decision to issue arrest warrants for Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav Gallant. In response, Microsoft turned off Khan’s email address. Casper Klynge, a

6 things I always do when setting up a new phone

While I may tweak my approach depending on whether I plan to use the phone as my new daily driver or as a secondary device (such as a camer

What We Know So Far About the Supposed ‘Mother of All Data Breaches’

Data breaches are so common these days that, when a new one gets announced, most web users can do little more than yawn and mutter something like “Yeah, no shit” before scrolling up to the next story in their newsfeed. How to Beat Jet Lag

We’ve all been there after a long trip—staring blankly at emails, counting the hours until bed. Yet when 2 am hits, you’re still wide awake, mindlessly scrolling through Instagram, trapped in the grip of jet lag. That’s the price for crossing time zones too fast. Our internal clock, or circadian rhythm, governs everything from sleep to digestion to hormones and uses light to maintain its natural 24-hour cycle. But when we land in a new time zone, and day suddenly turns to night, this rhythm is
