Building a Jeopardy Game for Laravel Live Denmark

August 27, 2025 By Mathias Hansen A crazy idea that turned into a fun mashup of software and hardware...and all of it with Laravel As a co-organizer and the MC of Laravel Live Denmark, I was tasked with helping to come up with an idea for entertainment during the conference. Entertaining on stage gets me pretty excited. Inspired by PHP Jeopardy, we decided to give Laravel Jeopardy a go this year. But this wasn't going to be just Jeopardy. I decided to go a little bit wild and build an enti

In any autoregressive model, the prediction of the future tokens is based on some preceding context. However, not all the tokens within this context equally contribute to the prediction, because some tokens might be more relevant than others. The attention mechanism addresses this by allow

Why did books start being divided into chapters? A new history

Perhaps it is the inevitable fate of any convention, but literary history does not, it turns out, have many examples of people appreciating great chaptering. In The History of English Prose Rhythm (1912) – one of the sources for James Joyce’s virtuosic-or-unreadable parodies of the evolution of English prose in Ulysses – George Saintsbury remarks on Thomas Malory’s decision to insert a chapter break at a decisive moment in his fifteenth-century Morte d’Arthur. At the end of chapter ten of the Mo

Are we decentralized yet?

This page measures the concentration of user data on the Fediverse and the Atmosphere according to the Herfindahl–Hirschman Index (HHI), an indicator from economics used to measure competition between firms in an industry. Mathematically, HHI is the sum of the squares of market shares of all servers. Values close to zero indicate perfectly competitive markets (eg. many servers, with users spread evenly), while values close to 10000 indicate highly concentrated monopolies (eg. most users on a si

Is AI Running the Government? Here’s What We Know

The Trump administration is letting the generative AI chatbots loose. Federal agencies such as the General Services Administration and the Social Security Administration have rolled out ChatGPT-esque tech for their workers. The Department of Veterans Affairs is using generative AI to write code. The U.S. Army has deployed CamoGPT, a generative AI tool, to review documents to eliminate references to diversity, equity, and inclusion. More tools are coming down the line. The Department of Educati

Verizon’s ‘software issue’ has disconnected many wireless customers across the US

Nvidia says two mystery customers accounted for 39% of Q2 revenue

Nearly 40% of Nvidia’s second quarter revenue came from just two customers, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. On Wednesday, the chipmaker reported record revenue of $46.7 billion during the quarter that ended on July 27 — a 56% year-over-year increase largely driven by the AI data center boom. However, subsequent reporting highlighted how much of that growth seems to be coming from just a handful of customers. Specifically, Nvidia said that a single customer

Hitman on iOS, martial arts survival and other new indie games worth checking out

Welcome to our latest recap of what's going on in the indie game space. One very well-known indie found its way to iOS devices this week, though there are other new releases worth highlighting and plenty of other upcoming games to tell you about. First, though, there was a (paywalled) story in Game File this week that caught my eye. It's about how Google's AI Overviews feature offers up false video game tips. That's a problem the developers of a game called Trash Goblin — a cosy shopkeeping gam

The US government drops its CHIPS Act requirements for Intel

Intel no longer has to fulfill certain requirements or meet milestones that it was originally supposed to under the CHIPS Act, now that the government is taking a stake in the company. According to the Wall Street Journal, Intel said in a filing that it can now receive funding from the government, as long as it can show that it has already spent $7.9 billion on projects that it agreed to take on under a deal with the Commerce Department last year. Reuters notes that Intel has already spent $7.87

The best Labor Day sales for 2025: Tech from Apple, Dyson, Sony and others is up to 50 percent off

It also marks a good time to check out the tech deals available across the web. Here, we've curated the best Labor Day sa

New interpretations suggest the "heat death" hypothesis might not hold (2023)

New interpretations of the laws of thermodynamics suggest the infamous “heat death” hypothesis, which foretells the end of all life and organization in the universe, might not hold. Credits Bobby Azarian is a cognitive neuroscientist, a science journalist and the author of the book “The Romance of Reality: How the Universe Organizes Itself to Create Life, Consciousness and Cosmic Complexity.” Perhaps the most depressing scientific idea that has ever been put forth is the infamous “heat death h

The First ‘Knights of Guinevere’ Trailer Invites You to a Creepy Trip

Back in January, animation studio Glitch revealed Knights of Guinevere, its upcoming web series from Owl House alums Dana Terrace, Zach Marcus, and John Bailey Owen. All we had to go off of back then was the contrast of a lush fairy tale setting with some body horror in the sci-fi vein, and now we know a little more about the show, including when we’ll get to see its first episode. On Friday, Glitch released Guinevere’s first full trailer, which shows a beautiful fantasy theme park that’s not q

AI Is Golden or ‘Not Rational’: Wall Street’s Battle With Which Road to Take

As investments in artificial intelligence continue to soar, some analysts are raising alarms about a looming bubble that could burst and trigger broader market declines. Others, however, say they’ve never been so sure that it is a growing opportunity. So who is right? Well, on Wall Street, there’s a pick-your-flavor opinion for whatever it is you want to back, so we can’t determine that. But we can show you what each side is thinking. Firstly, that the sector is overvalued. Analysts and invest

This New iOS 26 Battery Feature Could Extend Your iPhone's Daily Power

I don't know anyone who's satisfied with their phone's battery life. We always want more power so we don't wind up with a tapped-out phone at the end of the day or the need to carry a portable charger everywhere. So I'm very curious to see how Adaptive Power affects iPhone battery life when iOS 26 is released, likely soon after the iPhone 17 is announced at Apple's Sept. 9 fall event. Currently, the iPhone uses as much power as it needs to perform its tasks. You can extend the battery life by d

Labor Day Just Made My Favorite All-in-One Kitchen Appliance a Steal at 25% Off

I'd estimate that I cook at home about 90% of the time. That means I've run through a ton of kitchen appliances, ranging from revolutionary to downright useless. Luckily, the Chefman Everything Maker is pretty dang clever -- and it's become my go-to appliance that I use almost daily. Right now for Labor Day, you can get a sweet 25% discount on the Everything Maker. The normal list price of $60 on the Chefman website already feels like a good deal for what this appliance can accomplish -- which

Premier League Soccer: Livestream Wolves vs. Everton From Anywhere

Below, we'll outline the best live TV streaming services for watching Premier League games as they happen, wherever you are in the world, and how to use a VPN if it's not available where you are. My Secret Weapon for All-Season Campervan Adventures Is This Portable AC

CNET's key takeaways The Wave 3 lists for $1,300, but often drops to $900. The optional battery pack adds between $550 and $900, depending on sales and deals. The Wave 3 offers enough cooling and heating for small spaces and does so reasonably quietly (it's still an air conditioner after all). While portable, the Wave 3 with the battery is fairly heavy at 55.1 pounds. A few years ago, I built a campervan out of a Ford Transit Connect. My goal when designing it was "tent replacement," not "ye

Taco Bell is having second thoughts about relying on AI at the drive-through

In Brief Taco Bell’s chief digital officer says the company is having an “active conversation” about when to use and not to use AI. The company has apparently rolled out voice AI-powered ordering at more than 500 drive-throughs, leading to unflattering viral moments like someone ordering 18,000 water cups in order to “bypass” the AI and get connected to a human server. Chief Digital and Technology Officer Dane Matthews told The Wall Street Journal that even he has mixed experiences with techn

These are the 6 things I’m hoping for on the new reMarkable device headed to shelves

Kaitlyn Cimino / Android Authority Earlier this week, the reMarkable team dropped a playful teaser with the suggestive tagline, “something is on the move.” The clip is choppy, fast-paced, and intentionally ambiguous, leaving shoppers guessing exactly what’s headed to shelves on September 3 at 8:00 AM ET. To be clear, I really like my ReMarkable Paper Pro (I even gave it 4 stars during my review), but who doesn’t love an upgrade? With the countdown to the reveal underway, here’s my wishlist. Wh

Best Air Fryer Toaster Ovens for 2025

Air fryer chicken wings These chicken wings cooked in the Ninja air fryer were a thing of beauty. David Watsky/CNET Chicken wings are almost universally loved and a very popular item to air fry. The goal for an air-fried wing is crispy outside and skin with a juicy inside. To test each oven's air fry ability, I cooked three frozen wings on air fry mode at 450 F for 30 minutes, turning them every 10 minutes. I let each oven come to full preheat before putting the wings in and then photographed

Libby is adding an AI book recommendation feature

Overdrive's digital book lending app Libby is adding — you guessed it! — AI. The new Inspire Me feature is an AI-fueled discovery tool tuned to your local branch's collection. Following a soft launch this month, it will be officially available in September. To avoid the pitfalls of a full-on chatbot, Overdrive is limiting the discovery process of the feature. Instead of typing freely into a prompt box, you'll start by answering several canned preference questions. These include categories (such
