The Latest ‘Alien: Earth’ Trailer Adds Even More Alien Monsters

In the Alien movies, one killer species is more than enough for humanity to deal with. Actually, it’s almost always too much. Most everyone usually dies. But, in Alien: Earth, which comes to FX on August 12, it’s not just that iconic xenomorph the characters will have to deal with. Four other killer monsters have crash-landed on our planet too. Let the fun begin. From the mind of Noah Hawley, Alien: Earth takes a whole new look at the franchise made famous by the likes of Ridley Scott and James

A hidden Google Earth slider lets you travel up to 80 years back in time - here's how to try it

Elyse Betters Picaro / ZDNET You might've heard about that recent viral Street View trend -- the one where people learned they can go back in time and see street-view-level imagery of their house or a loved one's home, and they're getting emotional spotting long-gone relatives, friends, or even trees when they try it for themselves. But did you know you can do something similar with Google Earth? Also: Waze vs. Google Maps: Which navigation app is best? Unlike Google Street View, which only g

I Asked CNET Staffers Their Favorite Emoji for World Emoji Day. Smileys Reign Supreme

Every July 17, the internet comes together and celebrates World Emoji Day. The date was chosen because it's displayed on the 📅calendar emoji, but it's a day to appreciate all emoji, even the more obscure ones, like the 🫙jar emoji. In honor of the internet holiday, I asked my colleagues at CNET what their favorite and most used emoji are. The rules for voting were simple: You could only vote once for your favorite emoji and once for your most-used emoji. There was more variety in the category of

Hate Windows 11? Here's how you can make it work more like Windows 10

Pau Barrena/Bloomberg via Getty Images I wrote the original version of this post when Windows 11 was still less than a year old, after reading a ton of feedback from early adopters. I didn't have to spend a lot of time in support forums and other community sites to hear a steady stream of criticism from people who were annoyed by the changes Microsoft made in the Windows 10 user interface they had grown comfortable with. Enough time has passed since the original Windows 11 release that some of

Call of Duty cheaters complain after Activision launches new wave of mass-bans

Several players of the popular first-person shooter Call of Duty complained last week that they were permanently banned from the game for using a well-known cheat. Video game streamer ItsHapa wrote on X last week that Call of Duty players using ArtificialAiming, a cheat provider of more than 19 years, were the targets of a “massive wave of permabans,” referring to bans that cannot be reversed, which prevents cheaters from creating new accounts. The streamer also posted a series of screenshots f

Scale AI lays off 14% of staff, largely in data-labeling business

In Brief Data-labeling startup Scale AI is laying off 200 employees, roughly 14% of its staff, and cutting ties with 500 of its global contractors, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday. The cuts come just a month after Meta hired Scale AI’s CEO in a $14.3 billion deal. In a memo obtained by Bloomberg, interim CEO Jason Droege told staff that Scale AI had too quickly scaled its core data-labeling business — in which the startup supplied AI labs with labeled, structured data to train AI models. GMC Hummer EV outsold the Tesla Cybertruck last quarter

Sales of Tesla’s Cybertruck have plummeted from their peak last year, to the point that the hulking (and expensive) GMC Hummer EV outsold the polarizing steel-clad curiosity in the second quarter. Tesla sold just 4,306 Cybertrucks in the second quarter, just shy of the 4,508 Hummers that GMC moved in the same period, according to new data from Cox Automotive. Both were beat by Ford’s F-150 Lightning, which once again became the best-selling electric truck in the U.S. in the first quarter, beat

What Is the Best Smart Ring for Health Tracking? I Tested 3 Popular Options to Find Out

The Oura ring was my favorite smart ring because its app was easy to understand and I liked some of the newer features from its latest software update. At the steep price of $299, this smart ring is made up of aerospace-grade titanium – one of the strongest materials on earth -- according to the site. Before I received my Oura ring, I was sent a ring sizer to figure out my ring size. Other smart rings did the same since sizing varies per brand. Once I received the Oura ring, I downloaded the Ou

AV startup Pronto acquires off-road autonomous vehicle rival SafeAI

The Venn diagram of engineers who know a little bit about AI, self-driving, and mining has a small intersection. Pronto CEO Anthony Levandowski wants as many of those people as possible. And an acquisition is helping him achieve that goal. The San Francisco-based startup, which has developed a self-driving system designed for haulage trucks and other off-road vehicles used at construction and mining sites, has acquired competitor SafeAI, TechCrunch has learned. Pixel Piranhas

I really hate it when I’m exposed to some horrible news online, and feel powerless. There is nothing I can do, I am not responsible, and yet at the same time I have this feeling “this shouldn’t be happening”. There is a temptation to immediately react – if it was printed, I would crumple up the paper and throw it away – yet, reading pixels on the screen I don’t have the right gesture to express my discontent. So I made this little browser extension. Click on a button, and a horde of cursor

There could be “dark main sequence” stars at the galactic center

For a star, its initial mass is everything. It determines how quickly it burns through its hydrogen and how it will evolve once it starts fusing heavier elements. It's so well understood that scientists have devised a "main sequence" that acts a bit like a periodic table for stars, correlating their mass and age with their properties. The main sequence, however, is based on an assumption that's almost always true: All of the energy involved comes from the gravity-driven fusion of lighter elemen
