The Prime Day sale on TCL’s 85-inch TV is one of the best deals out there

Prime Day 2025 is the best time this year to get a big-screen TV. Sure, there are deals in the weeks leading up to the Super Bowl, but those are generally on the previous year’s TV because most new models haven’t been released yet. Prime Day, however, comes after most major TV refreshes — including the 85-inch TCL QM8K, available for a limited time at Amazon and Best Buy for $2,499.99 ($1,300 off). For its size and overall brightness, especially if you’re looking for a bright-room TV, the QM8K

How to Save a Dog

The first time I glimpsed the city of New Orleans, I was a small boy in the wheelhouse of a tugboat. My father pushed barges up and down the Mississippi River, and sometimes he let me tag along. The city seemed so luminous at night—so different from tiny Convent, Louisiana, where I was from—that it felt otherworldly and inaccessible. In 2020, I moved there during a painful divorce. Because of that childhood memory, my relocation felt somehow transgressive. I was going where I did not belong. Sh

Starlink Is Coming to Phones in 2 Weeks. Check Whether You'll Get It for Free

In two weeks, you could be able to send a text message -- or even a photo, video or voice note -- from deep inside a national park or mountain pass. That's the future T-Mobile envisions, as its partnership with SpaceX's Starlink satellite service gets ready to launch on July 23. The alliance will provide direct-to-cell messaging service, called T-Satellite, which will also be available to AT&T and Verizon cellphone customers. T-Mobile says its goal is to "eliminate mobile dead zones for good" b

Conspiracy Theories About the Texas Floods Lead to Death Threats

On Sunday afternoon, Michael Meyer, the founder of anti-government extremist group Veterans on Patrol, posted a warning on his Telegram channel. “Due to the recent weather weapon deployed against Texas, which resulted in a high number of child murders, efforts to eliminate this military treason are being escalated,” Meyer, who is commonly known as Lewis Arthur, wrote. Hours later, a man broke into an enclosure containing the NextGen Live Radar system operated by News 9 in Oklahoma City, damagi

FTC’s click-to-cancel rule has been struck down by federal judges at the eleventh hour

In 2024, the FTC was set to implement the "click to cancel" rule, which would have placed requirements on companies to be forthright about the terms and conditions and exit options for their subscriptions. Since that time, the agency has become a less independent part of the executive branch and in May, it delayed enforcing some parts of this rule to July 14. Today, the entire plan appears to be dead in the water after judges in the US Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals decided to vacate the rule.

Why I recommend this $450 Google Pixel deal over competing models from Samsung and OnePlus

The Tradeoffs of SSMs and Transformers

This blog post was adapted from a talk I’ve given a handful of times over the last year. It was meant to be a high-level talk accessible to a fairly broad audience, but hopefully has some interesting insights, opinions, and intuitions around sequence models for the dedicated researchers too. State Space Models Just so we’re on the same page, I’ll start by defining what I mean by a state space model. (This section isn’t strictly necessary to get to the main part of this post though; feel free t

Mike Lindell lost defamation case, and his lawyers were fined for AI hallucinations

Lawyers representing MyPillow and its CEO Mike Lindell were fined $6,000 after using artificial intelligence in a brief that was riddled with misquotes and citations to fictional cases. Attorney Christopher Kachouroff and the law firm of McSweeney Cynkar & Kachouroff were fined $3,000, jointly and severally. Attorney Jennifer DeMaster was separately ordered to pay $3,000. This "is the least severe sanction adequate to deter and punish defense counsel in this instance," US District Judge Nina Wa

Volodymyr Zelensky’s Clothing Has Sparked a Polymarket Rebellion

Did Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky wear a suit? It should be a simple question, but a dispute over the answer has torn apart bettors on the gambling site Polymarket. With a collective $210 million on the line, some claim to have been denied their rightful winnings. Polymarket is a platform that allows users to gamble cryptocurrency on the outcome of a particular event, ranging from sports games to election outcomes to niche wagers on movie box office results. Each individual prediction ma

AI Does Something Subtly Bizarre If You Make Typos While Talking to It

New research suggests that medical AI chatbots are woefully unreliable at understanding how people actually communicate their health problems. As detailed in yet-to-be-peer-reviewed study presented last month by MIT researchers, an AI chatbot is more likely to advise a patient not to seek medical care if their messages contained typos. The errors AI is susceptible to can be as seemingly inconsequential as an extra space between words, or if the patient used slang or colorful language. And strik

Particle Lenia Deluxe Edition

Particle Lenia Deluxe Edition. Lenia is a family of cellular automata that produces lifelike behaviors and patterns, first described in the seminal paper by Bert Wang-Chak Chan. This project is heavily inspired by the original Particle Lenia research by Alexander Mordvintsev et al., which implemented a particle-based version of Lenia in Python and JAX. Recognizing the importance of scale (number of particles) for simulation dynamics and iteration times for rapid pattern exploration, I ported th

The Movie Everyone Thought Would Be ‘Dune Messiah’ Is Now Officially ‘Dune: Part 3’

Though there’s still no official release date, Dune fans have long assumed director Denis Villeneuve is readying production on the third film in the sci-fi series. Some casting news a few weeks back helped strengthen that notion—and now we have a title locked in. Surprisingly, it’s not Dune Messiah, in keeping with Frank Herbert’s source-material novel. It’s… drum roll… Dune: Part Three. According to Variety, Dune: Part Three is still expected to release in December 2026, the slot previously re

Short Sellers Are Making a Fortune as Tesla's Stock Collapses

They're making billions -- and Musk can't stop dragging the brand through the mud. Short Cake Tesla short sellers are making bank after CEO Elon Musk announced that he's doubling down on creating his own political party in the US, further shredding the brand and its tattered valuation. The company's shares slumped nearly seven percent on Monday, wiping out more than $68 billion in market cap. There’s now a cheaper Retroid Pocket Flip 2 available, but here’s why you shouldn’t buy it

Nick Fernandez / Android Authority TL;DR The Dimensity 1100 edition of the Retroid Pocket Flip 2 will go up for sale later today. With the 72-hour early bird discount, it costs $50 less than the Snapdragon 865 version. The D1100 is powerful enough for PS2, but the SD865 has better driver support. The release of the Retroid Pocket Flip 2 earlier this year was rocky to say the least, with the looming threat of tariffs and halted shipping marring what was otherwise one of the most anticipated A

Don't Miss This Iconic Conspiracy Thriller That's Now Streaming on Netflix

We may be past the era of Peak TV, but it's always fun to look back at the plethora of shows that hit television, propelled unknown actors to superstardom, and dominated the conversation. There are so many good ones, with obvious examples like Lost, Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad. When Vince Gilligan's hit drug drama came to an end in 2013, I was left wondering what series would capture the cultural zeitgeist next. I never thought it would be a show about the internet, of all things, but it w

Fortnite Maker Epic Games Settles With Samsung Following App-Blocking Lawsuit

Epic Games says it's reached a settlement after taking legal action against Samsung, which it sued last year along with Google over antitrust issues. In a motion filed in a California district court, Epic requested a dismissal of its claims against Samsung, saying Epic, "has reached a settlement agreement with Defendants Samsung Electronics Co, Ltd. and Samsung Electronics America, Inc." Epic did not disclose the terms of the settlement, but the original suit focused around Samsung blocking th

Nissan feels the effect of US-China trade war

Nissan's third-generation Leaf sounds like it will be quite the attractive electric vehicle. Smaller but more spacious than the car it will replace later this year, it should be more efficient and at last feature proper thermal management of the battery. But now it seems that Nissan will build fewer Leafs than it planned, thanks to Chinese restrictions on the export of certain rare-earth elements that are critically important for electronics and electric motors. The export restrictions mean a l

The Google Pixel 9 Pro for $250 off is my favorite Prime Day phone deal - and it's not even close

Adam Breeden/ZDNET The Google Pixel 9 Pro is currently marked down to $749 at Amazon during its Prime Day sale, a $250 discount from retail price. Last year, I was emphatic that my time with Pixel phones was over because Google had announced it was planning to inject even more AI "goodness" into Android. I saw that as an opportunity to jump ship. My goal was to buy the Nothing Phone 3. Then, as fate would have it, Nothing CEO Carl Pei announced that his company was going all-in on AI, and the
