Bat colony checks in to hotel; 200 guests check out, unaware of rabies scare

Health officials in Wyoming are sinking their teeth into a meaty task. Over 200 people who stayed in a hotel in Grand Teton National Park between May and July may have unknowingly been exposed to rabies, according to Wyoming Public Radio. In an announcement on Friday, the National Park Service reported finding evidence of a bat colony in the attic. The discovery was made after there had been at least eight incidents in which guests encountered winged mammals inside the hotel. Now, the Wyoming

Gemini will remember more (or less) of what you say

Google is adding a temporary chat feature to Gemini. The equivalent of a browser's incognito mode, it lets you have one-off AI chats. They won't appear in your history, influence future chats or be used for training. The temporary chats will be saved for up to 72 hours. Google says this is to give you time to revisit the chat or provide feedback. The feature begins rolling out today and will continue to do so over the coming weeks. It arrives alongside a new setting that does, well, pretty muc

Tony Robbins and Peter Diamandis’ longevity company Fountain Life raises $18M

Eight years ago, orthopedic surgeon Dr. William Kapp attended a medical conference that changed his professional life. He had gone from a private-practice doctor to co-founding a company that built critical care hospitals to then selling that company. It gave him an interest for both sides of healthcare: the medicine and business sides, he told TechCrunch. So he went to the annual conference hosted by famed physician-scientist Dr. Daniel Kraft to learn about new tech that could improve results

What to Do When Critical Open Source Projects Go End of Life

Ninety-eight percent of organizations use open source software (OSS) regularly, according to the Linux Foundation. Open source is pervasive. It’s embedded into the fabric of most applications we use in our daily lives. But it’s getting harder to keep up the pace of OSS version deprecations and end-of-life (EOL) cycles. “The life cycle for open source versions is definitely shortening,” Aaron Frost, co-founder and CEO at HeroDevs, which offers long-term support for deprecated open source, told T

So what's the difference between plotted and printed artwork?

Pen plotters are somewhat like 3D printers. They move in X/Y space and typically have a pen lift mechanism. Attached to their arm can be any number of drawing instruments, from pens to pencils, brushes to pastels, and even drill bits to scratch glass. Printers (we'll focus on inkjet for this article) blast tiny ink particles into paper and can seamlessly mix them to create a range of visually distinct hues and tones. In the art world, they're commonly used to make Giclée prints, which are essen

Chatbots aren’t telling you their secrets

On Monday, xAI’s Grok chatbot suffered a mysterious suspension from X, and faced with questions from curious users, it happily explained why. “My account was suspended after I stated that Israel and the US are committing genocide in Gaza,” it told one user. “It was flagged as hate speech via reports,” it told another, “but xAI restored the account promptly.” But wait — the flags were actually a “platform error,” it said. Wait, no — “it appears related to content refinements by xAI, possibly tied

Evaluating LLMs playing text adventures

What we’ll do is set a low-ish turn limit and see how much they manage to accomplish in that time.1 Another alternative for more linear games is running them multiple times with a turn limit and seeing how often they get past a particular point within that turn limit. Given how much freedom is offered to players of text adventures, this is a difficult test. It’s normal even for a skilled human player to immerse themselves in their surrounding rather than make constant progress. I wouldn’t be su

Now That Google Is Trash, It Will Let You Pick Your Own News Sources

Google seems to have destroyed the quality of its search results (and its reputation) by loading its feed with sponsored results, pages boosted by SEO black magic, and AI-generated slop. So it’s putting the control back in your hands, for better or worse. The company announced today via blog post a new feature called Preferred Sources that will let users select their own favorite news outlets to appear at the top of their personalized search feed. Researchers Made a Social Media Platform Where Every User Was AI. The Bots Ended Up at War

Social platforms like Facebook and X exacerbate the problem of political and social polarization, but they don’t create it. A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands put AI chatbots in a simple social media structure to see how they interacted with each other and found that, even without the invisible hand of the algorithm, they tend to organize themselves based on their pre-assigned affiliations and self-sort into echo chambers. The study, a prep

Hearing health is incredibly important, and gentle reminders from Apple to keep that in mind can be helpful. However, if you’re just tired of seeing headphone volume limit warnings, there’s actually a way to turn those off. iOS and iPadOS track headphone audio exposure over a rolling seven-day period. Colorado Residents Are Spotting Weird-Looking Rabbits With Black Horns and Mouth Tentacles

People in Fort Collins, Colorado, are seeing rabbits with black horns and tentacles that wouldn’t look out of place in a horror movie. Though frightening, their appearance is caused by a known virus that’s harmless to humans. Journalist Amanda Gilbert documented the town sightings in an article for local outlet 9NEWS last Friday. Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials say the rabbits are afflicted with a virus that causes wart-like projections to emerge from their faces—a condition that likely e

YouTube backlash begins: “Why is AI combing through every single video I watch?”

Tens of thousands of YouTubers are raging against YouTube's plan to use AI to detect underage users in the US. On Tuesday, a Change.org petition rapidly neared its 50,000-signature goal, with tens of thousands hoping that with enough users protesting, the wide rollout of the AI age checks might be stopped. They fear the age checks will make it harder to access content they love while staying anonymous on the platform YouTube's age verification system estimates user ages by interpreting a "vari
