I found a worthy Ring alternative in this video security camera (and it has no subscriptions)

ZDNET's key takeaways The Aqara Camera Hub G5 Pro is available for $180 for the Wi-Fi version and $200 for the PoE version. This indoor/outdoor security camera doubles as a smart home hub, features 1520p resolution for crystal-clear images, RTSP support, and has a built-in NPU to process video with AI for visual recognition. The camera is wired, so placement is limited, and there is no expandable storage, so you need a subscription to access video history or bypass it through video server soft

Solving LinkedIn Queens Using Haskell

June 24, 2025 · Agnishom Chattopadhyay [Thanks to James Haydon for his suggestions on improving the post and the code quality] On LinkedIn, you can play a variant of the N-Queens problem. A community version of the game (rather, puzzle) can be found here. Recently, we saw it solved using SAT solvers, using SMT Solvers, using APL and MiniZinc. Today, I will try solving it using Haskell, a slightly more conventional language. The Puzzle You are given a N-colored square-shaped board of size N.

Mario Kart 64 races onto PC with unofficial port, no emulation necessary

The big picture: Emulating the Nintendo 64 has always been a contentious topic. The release of UltraHLE was a landmark moment, offering a way to run commercial N64 games at playable frame rates on Windows 9x when the console was barely three years old. Today, the situation has improved dramatically, with more accurate emulation options and alternative ways to faithfully recreate Nintendo's gameplay magic on the PC. The Harbour Masters collective has once again achieved the impossible. The team

Hue’s new smart button is bigger and more expensive

Smart lighting company Hue has released a new version of its Smart Button, one of the simplest ways of controlling Hue’s colorful smart lights. The new Smart Button has a bigger design and a bit of price hike — in the U.S., at least, where it now costs $32.99 compared to $29.99 for its predecessor. That’s significantly more than the UK and EU pricing for the new button — £19.99 and €21.99 respectively — possibly a sign of things to come. The new button is available now directly from Hue’s site.

Google’s pulling money away from Android TV and Google TV

Joe Maring / Android Authority TL;DR Google has reportedly reduced the budget for its smart TV group by 10%. Despite the reduction, the company promises “an exciting road map ahead.” Up to a quarter of the members of the 300-strong group could be impacted by the change. Google has not made it particularly easy to be a fan of Android TV. While the platform is absolutely chock-full of potential, it’s been incredibly frustrating to see it treated like such an afterthought, year after year. Why

JLab’s new party speaker puts a light show in your pocket

is a senior reporter who’s been covering and reviewing the latest gadgets and tech since 2006, but has loved all things electronic since he was a kid. JLab has announced a new Party line of wireless speakers that continues an industry trend of adding animated RGB lighting to anything that plays music. That even includes the new budget-minded JLab Pop Party speaker — which is small enough to squeeze into a pocket but still features customizable LEDs. The $19.99 Pop Party is the lightest and che

Meet Google Martha, the company’s Android XR smart glasses prototype

TL;DR Google demoed its Android XR smart glasses prototype at Google I/O 2025. We now learn that this Android XR prototype is called “Google Martha.” Its companion app handles connected features like notifications, settings access, video recording from the user’s perspective, and more. After over a year of teasing with Project Astra, Google showed off its Android XR glasses on stage at Google I/O 2025. My colleague C. Scott Brown even got to try them on, and he was impressed with the demo. Si

Kids' Smartwatches Might Be Better Phone Alternatives: Here's What to Look For

A big advantage of giving a child a smartwatch is that it saves you from having to buy a smartphone while still providing a direct line to your kid. This can be especially helpful for parents managing pickup and drop-off logistics or relying on other caregivers for transportation. Younger kids, in particular, may benefit from avoiding the distractions that come with a phone. The fact that a watch is strapped to their wrist is also a bonus, considering how many water bottles and sweatshirts end u

Watch this person play The Witcher 3 on their Galaxy Watch Ultra

TL;DR A Redditor has shown off GeForce Now running on the Galaxy Watch Ultra. The user’s uploaded video shows them playing The Witcher 3 on the smartwatch. The smartwatch isn’t actually doing any of the heavy lifting, but it’s still a cool showcase. We’ve already seen people running retro games on their smartwatches thanks to emulators, but it turns out that you can also play full-fledged PC games on your Wear OS watch. Then again, I’m not sure why you’d want to do so in the first place. Red

Verlet Integration and Cloth Physics Simulation (2022)

Physics simulation in games (or simply game physics) is a vast topic, and in this post we'll cover only a tiny part of it; yet certainly an interesting one! Let's understand what Verlet integration is by implementing a simple 2D cloth simulation with C++. Physics in games is always fun, isn't it? Have you ever ditched the main quest of a level just to blow something up? I know I have. But even more fun than watching objects bounce around the screen is to understand how we can use simple concep

How to Clean Hearing Aids

You can also use this tool to gently brush the tip of the dome of each eartip, where wax is most likely to accumulate. If any tenacious wax is stuck to the tip of the dome, try using the wire loop on the reverse of the brush to gently scoop it out. Next, check the back of the receiver, where the wire attaches to it, and brush this area as well. You can use a microfiber cloth to remove any material that is dislodged during this step. The bad boy of bar charts: William Playfair (2023)

A spy, a scoundrel, and a scholar William Playfair was all three. He led an extraordinary life at the heart of many of the great events of the 18th and 19th centuries, mostly in morally dubious roles. Among all the intrigue, scandal, and indebtedness, he found time to invent the bar and pie charts, and make pioneering use of line charts. As we'll see, he was quite a character. Playfair the scoundrel Playfair's lifetime (1759-1823) contained some momentous events: The development of the steam

AI Startup That Raised $81 Million to Detect Wildfires Bamboozled by Clouds, Still Relies on Humans

It's boom time for AI startups. Across the world, enterprising tech types are being rewarded with millions for forcing AI into all kinds of gadgets, like an autonomous lawnmower, an AI-powered robo-mattress, and even an AI-enabled toilet. While the vast majority of even the most well-funded AI startups tend to collapse like houses of cards, VC spending on outlandish techno slop — like the Lemonflow, a "voice-based AI agent for charging infrastructure" — isn't slowing down. In the first three mo

Life as Slime

This article concludes Issue 06. Watch our Behind-the-Scenes interview with the author on YouTube. By Thomas Moynihan In 1832, Ferdinand von Ritgen, a German physician, puzzled over how the first generation of humans birthed themselves. He pictured their embryos sprouting spontaneously “without procreating parents preceding them,” like fungal growths emerging from the ground. By Ritgen’s day, it was understood that life on Earth had predated humanity’s debut for eons and that living creatures

Meta's new $399 Oakley smart glasses beat the Ray-Bans in almost every way

Drinks in glass bottles contain more microplastics than those in other container

The aim of the ANSES study was to determine the level of microplastic contamination in drinks such as water, soda, iced tea, wine and beer; it also sought to establish the impact of their containers on this level. For most of the drinks studied, the level of microplastics was found to be higher in glass bottles than in other containers. For example, on average, in glass bottles of cola, lemonade, iced tea and beer, there were around 100 microplastic particles per litre. This number was five to 5

Can Labubu Endure Collectible Hype?

The latest drop from Pop Mart’s the Monsters collection might be its most ambitious yet: putting the blind-box darling Labubu into a funky foodie product line that might turn off existing fans. With the Monsters: Wacky Mart, Kasing Lung’s original intention with the mischievous creature shines in a way that might appeal more to vinyl art collectors. Here they give Gremlins energy as they get into munchy mayhem in milk cartons or tempura shrimp. It’s a distinct move that leans into Labubus being
