How I used ChatGPT to analyze, debug, and rewrite a broken plugin from scratch - in an hour

NiroDesign/Getty Images I am not a morning person, yet my alarm goes off at 5:30 am every day. This is because the editorial team I work with is on the East Coast, and I'm in Oregon. I do a quick check of email and Slack to make sure nothing is on fire, then settle down to a relaxed first cup of coffee. Once caffeinated, I'm fairly gruntled. Unfortunately, one day in early June, my website was, at least figuratively, on fire. My hosting provider sent me a notice telling me that one of the plug

How ChatGPT actually works (and why it's been so game-changing)

Elyse Betters Picaro / ZDNET Back in the day (and by "in the day," I mean late 2022, before AI chatbots exploded on the scene), tools like Google and Wolfram Alpha interacted with users via a single-line text entry field and provided text results. Google returned search results -- a list of web pages and articles that would (hopefully) provide information related to the search queries. Wolfram Alpha generally provided answers that were mathematical and data analysis-related. ChatGPT, by contra

What is going on in Unix with errno's limited nature

You're using a tool with a too-generic User-Agent You're probably reading this page because you've attempted to access some part of my blog (Wandering Thoughts) or CSpace, the wiki thing it's part of. Unfortunately whatever you're using to do so has a HTTP User-Agent header value that is too generic or otherwise excessively suspicious. Unfortunately, as of early 2025 there's a plague of high volume crawlers (apparently in part to gather data for LLM training) that behave like this. To reduce th

Trying to find meaning in owning an old Mac

Trying To Find Meaning In Owning An Old Mac My Dad loves classic cars. He goes to car shows and takes photos of beautiful chunks of metal from the 50s, 60s and 70s. Whenever we see those cars on the road he points them out like he's a spotted a rare bird out on a bush walk. Those are the cars of his youth and for the time, that was the big mainstream technology accessible to people that caused a change in society. Cities were built around cars and so were lifestyles. Cars had a large impact on

Epanet-JS

epanet-js is a new web application that combines modern web maps with the industry-standard EPANET hydraulic simulation algorithm. It’s for people planning and updating water utility systems: connecting pipes and pressures and figuring out what will happen. It’s a problem area that I’m totally fascinated by and know very little about. It’s made by the folks from Iterating - Luke Butler and Sam Payá, who are experts in the field. If you’ve been following along with my blog and projects, you migh

What Microchip doesn't (officially) tell you about the VSC8512

Switch project, part 3 - what Microchip doesn't (officially) tell you about the VSC8512 2025-07-04 08:00 This is part 3 of my ongoing series about LATENTRED, my project to create an open source 1U managed Ethernet switch from scratch. Here’s a quick, or maybe not-so-quick, update about the PHY on the line card and some of my troubles (and solutions). And probably more internal details than you want to know, but hey - maybe this will be useful to somebody. Not a lot of pretty pictures either.

Tesla’s Biggest Problem Is Its Own CEO

Tesla is Elon Musk. Elon Musk is Tesla. Rarely has a company’s identity been so inextricably linked to its CEO, for better and for worse. For years, this fusion was a superpower, giving Tesla an innovative mystique that captivated investors and propped up its valuation. Now, that same connection has become a massive liability. In a brutal reaction to Elon Musk’s latest political bombshell—the launch of his own political party—investors wiped nearly $70 billion off Tesla’s market capitalization

Microsoft Offers Free Windows 10 Extended Security Updates: Here's How to Get Them

Microsoft is closing the door on Windows 10 in October 2025, and will be ceasing security support for that operating system unless users pay $30 for a one-year extended security update. Now, Microsoft has added a free option. Users need to turn on cloud backup and connect it to their OneDrive account. The ability to get free updates on Windows 10 is a pretty big deal because it is still the most widely used Windows OS, accounting for just over 53% of installs as of May 2025. That leaves million

Here's How to Marvel at Mars, Venus and July's Spectacular Buck Moon

It's officially summer, and with that comes the first full moon of the season. July's full moon -- known as the Buck Moon or the Thunder Moon -- will light up the night sky on July 10 and be at its fullest going into July 11, reaching peak luminosity at around 4:37 a.m. local time, which is a bit late, but it'll still be bright for the whole night. According to Stellarium's sky map, the moon will rise from the southeastern horizon just after sunset in your local time and streak across the sky b

RFK Jr Has a Problem: the Synthetic Food Dyes He’s Trying to Eliminate Are in Candy Beloved by Trump

Image by Mars / Kevin Dietsch via Getty / Futurism Developments From the jump, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s alliance with Donald Trump has been fraught: the former hates fast food and artificial additives, while the latter is known for his love of burgers and Diet Coke. Nowhere has that tension been more clear than in the newly-minted Health and Human Services secretary's war on synthetic food dyes, which is his first battle in what he's framing as a war to reconstitute the United States' ultraproc
