Struggling fusion power company General Fusion gets $22M lifeline from investors

General Fusion, a Canadian nuclear fusion energy startup, announced today that it had been thrown a lifeline in the form of $22 million in fresh funding. The company had laid off at least 25% of its employees in May in a bid to shore up its stretched finances. At the same time, CEO Greg Twinney wrote an open letter pleading for funding. The additional cash will give General Fusion some breathing room, though not much. A subset of General Fusion’s existing investors ultimately ponied up for wha

Forced every engineer to take sales calls. They rewrote our platform in 2 weeks

Our senior DevOps engineer thought I'd lost my mind. He didn't join a startup to do sales. So he promised me 5 calls and I guaranteed he'd never have to do it again. It was a bit of a back-and-forth but I strongly believe it fundamentally changed how we build products. When I sat in on the calls, I observed a few things: - Seeing them explain why our competitor's platform was "too complex for non-technical users." - Seeing them assure the customer that the continuous monitoring was actually w

A summary of recent AI research (2016)

Story comprehension The robots of Westworld are not programmed solely by software developers. The bulk of the work is done by professional writers, who give each character a unique backstory. These stories give them the memories and depth they need to seem real to the park guests. When asked who they are, what they’ve done or why they feel a certain way, they can consult their backstory to find out the answer. Being able to answer questions about stories is a fundamental requirement for being

YouTube Music celebrates 10 years with new features that help it compete with Spotify

Google’s seemingly unrelenting quest to infuse AI into every aspect of your online life just got a lot more global in scope, with the company expanding its AI Mode in Search to over 180 new countries . Launch HN: Skope (YC S25) – Outcome-based pricing for software products

Hi HN, we’re Ben and Connor, the co-founders of Skope ( https://www.useskope.com/ ), a billing system that supports outcome-based pricing for software—that is, which charges your customers only when your software actually works. We’re an alternative to Stripe Billing, Orb, and Metronome that natively supports this pricing model, because we believe it’s especially needed for the AI products which are flooding the market and that will continue to be built in the future. Here’s a demo video: https

Silksong, Long-Awaited Hollow Knight Spinoff, Gets Release Date: Sept. 4

Hollow Knight: Silksong is the follow-up, announced back in 2019, to one of the most beloved indie games of the last decade. In a special announcement video on Thursday, Australian developer Team Cherry revealed that the wait is almost over. Silksong will be released on Sept. 4, according to the new trailer. The almost two-minute video reveals some of the new enemies and bosses in the upcoming spinoff and ends with the surprise release date. Originally, Silksong was going to be a DLC for Hollo

Pokémon looks scary again in the new Z-A trailer

One of the most brilliant things about Pokémon Legends: Arceus was the way it dropped you into the wilderness to fend for yourself as wild monsters tried to kill you. It was a surprising deviation from the franchise’s typically chill vibe that complimented the game’s story about how humans once lived in constant fear of pokémon. Arceus’ mild horror elements felt like something that might not carry over to Pokémon Legends: Z-A, but the new game’s latest trailer makes it seem like Nintendo wants t

AWS CEO says using AI to replace junior staff is 'Dumbest thing I've ever heard'

Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman has suggested firing junior workers because AI can do their jobs is "the dumbest thing I've ever heard." Garman made that remark in conversation with AI investor Matthew Berman, during which he talked up AWS’s Kiro AI-assisted coding tool and said he's encountered business leaders who think AI tools "can replace all of our junior people in our company." That notion led to the “dumbest thing I've ever heard” quote, followed by a justification that junior staf

Hank Green’s Focus Friend swapped my screen time for bean time

Earlier this week, a bean moved into my phone. Their name is Billie Bean King, and when I’m working, they work too, knitting socks and scarves. Billie’s knitted wares are more than just cozy clothes — they’re currency, used to buy lo-fi decorations for their barren room. But there’s a catch: Billie can only work when I’m not using my phone. That’s where the fun begins. Billie is a bean from the Focus Friend app, launched last month for iOS and Android by Hank Green of assorted internet fame. Th

Using Podman, Compose and BuildKit

Using Podman, Compose and BuildKit 2025-02-23 For my day job, I need to build and run a Docker Compose project. However, because Docker doesn’t play well with nftables and I prefer a rootless + daemonless approach, I’m using Podman. Podman supports Docker Compose projects with two possible solutions: either by connecting the official Docker Compose CLI to a Podman socket, either by using their own drop-in replacement. They ship a small wrapper to select one of these options. (The wrapper has t

A geothermal network in Colorado could help a rural town diversify its economy

This article originally appeared on Inside Climate News, a nonprofit, non-partisan news organization that covers climate, energy, and the environment. Sign up for their newsletter here. Hayden, a small town in the mountains of northwest Colorado, is searching for ways to diversify its economy, much like other energy communities across the Mountain West. For decades, a coal-fired power plant, now scheduled to shut down in the coming years, served as a reliable source of tax revenue, jobs, and e

The Illumos Cafe: Another Cozy Corner for OS Diversity

Introducing the illumos Cafe: Another Cozy Corner for OS Diversity From the BSD Cafe to illumos Cafe The idea for this new project was born from the success of the BSD Cafe, an initiative I introduced to the world in July 2023, which received an incredibly positive response. Far more than I ever anticipated. The BSD community already had its well-established hubs: in the Fediverse, places like bsd.network, exquisite.social, and others were already thriving, not to mention all the forums, chann

Tony Gilroy Is Very Sad at How Relevant ‘Andor’ Has Become

When Tony Gilroy began his Andor journey, his original pitch was deemed “pretty mad and undoable” by Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the showrunner revealed how that initial take would later get revisited after Lucasfilm gave it some thought. “They came back to me and said, ‘We looked at this memo from a year and a half ago, and it makes a lot more sense to us now,'” he recalled. That, of course, led to a series expanding on the very foundation t

Vibe coding creates a bus factor of zero

All the opinions expressed in this article and on this website are entirely my own and do not represent my employer in any way. Ever heard about the “Bus factor”? It is a concept that measures the risk of losing all knowledge about a particular thing – a software development project for example – by estimating how many team members could get crushed by a bus before nobody knows how to work on the project anymore. As an example, if 3 people on your team know how to restore a backup of your datab
