Top Programming Languages 2025

Since 2013, we’ve been metaphorically peering over the shoulders of programmers to create our annual interactive rankings of the most popular programming languages. But fundamental shifts in how people are coding may not just make it harder to measure popularity, but could even make the concept itself irrelevant. And then things might get really weird. To see why, let’s start with this year’s rankings and a quick refresher of how we put this thing together. In the “Spectrum” default ran

Context Engineering for AI Agents: Lessons

2025/7/18 - - Yichao 'Peak' Ji At the very beginning of the Manus project, my team and I faced a key decision: should we train an end-to-end agentic model using open-source foundations, or build an agent on top of the in-context learning abilities of frontier models? Back in my first decade in NLP, we didn't have the luxury of that choice. In the distant days of BERT (yes, it's been seven years), models had to be fine-tuned—and evaluated—before they could transfer to a new task. That process o

Thundering herd problem: Preventing the stampede

Couple of years back I wrote a post describing the thundering herd problem. Now that I look back, I had very cursory knowledge about the problem. I knew what it was & how can it impact an application. I knew a possible solution that can be used to solve the problem. But these were individual pieces of information. There was nothing connecting them to give me an end to end view & that was primarily because I had neither seen the problem nor the solution in action. I knew the fundamental blocks bu

Show HN: FlyCode – Recover Stripe payments by automatically using backup cards

We built FlyCode after seeing subscription businesses lose ~35% of recurring revenue each year to failed payments — even when customers had other valid cards on file. *The problem:* When a customer's primary card fails, Stripe retries a few times then cancels the subscription. If that customer has a backup card, it isn’t tried. At least 20% of active customers have more than one card on file, which means a lot of preventable churn. *Our solution:* FlyCode automatically identifies if a customer

How MCP Authentication Flaws Enable RCE in Claude Code, Gemini CLI, and More index During our security testing, we discovered that connecting to a malicious MCP server via common coding tools like Claude Code and Gemini CLI could give attackers instant control over user computers. As a preview, here’s a video of us opening the calculator (“popping calc”) on someone’s computer through Claude Code: “Popping calc” is a harmless way of showcasing remote code execution. Dedicated mobile apps for vibe coding have so far failed to gain traction

While many vibe coding startups have become unicorns, with valuations in the billions, one area where AI-assisted coding has not yet taken off is on mobile devices. Despite the numerous apps now available that offer vibe coding tools on mobile platforms, none are gaining noticeable downloads, and few are generating any revenue at all. According to an analysis of global app store trends by the app intelligence provider Appfigures, only a small handful of mobile apps offering vibe coding tools ha

Obscure feature + obscure feature + obscure feature = compiler bug

Michael Gibson Senior Engineer, Antithesis Obscure feature + obscure feature + obscure feature = bug Debugging In the quarter century I’ve been programming professionally, I’ve found three C++ compiler bugs; one each in g++1, clang++, and Microsoft’s MSVC. After finding roughly one problem every ten years, my takeaway is that you have to do something really, really obscure. Or actually, you have to use an obscure feature then pile on another obscure feature and pile on another obscure feature.

Getting More Strategic

Strategy – how to be strategic, and how to be seen as strategic – is one of my ongoing obsessions. Years ago, I read Good Strategy/Bad Strategy, and it’s guided my thinking ever since. One of the things that book helps clarify is that being strategic and being seen as strategic can work against each other – good strategy is obvious, and usually it is executed on more than it’s talked about. An ongoing frustration for other under indexed people in tech I talk to, as we build products and organiz
