OpenAI sharply increases sponsored Instagram posts promoting ChatGPT

OpenAI has expanded its influencer marketing, more than doubling sponsored Instagram posts for ChatGPT from 61 in June to 141 in August, according to HypeAuditor data cited by Business Insider. The company is reportedly pitching parenting, fitness and tech creators, urging them to frame ChatGPT as useful for everyday life and business rather than address AI safety worries directly.

Developer releases jevper, an open-source alternative backend for the Jev interface

A GitHub project called jevper reimplements the documented 'System One' wire format used by the Jev interface, letting developers run typed questions (choice, score, noul) against any OpenAI-compatible model instead of the hosted TypeSafe API. It works with self-hosted llama.cpp servers or other duck-typed clients, requiring no dependency on typesafe-sdk or openai at runtime, and is installable via pip as a Python 3.10+ package.

Sanders and Casar bill would ban superintelligent AI, impose 20-year prison terms

Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Greg Casar introduced the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act, which would outlaw development of AI systems capable of humanity's 'destruction or disempowerment.' The bill would also pause development of advanced 'frontier' AI models until a new government agency, the Department of Artificial Intelligence, is created to license and oversee such work. Violators, including company leaders and unaffiliated individuals, could face up to 20 years in prison.

Cybersecurity startup Gambit says a financially motivated threat actor has been using open-source AI agent tools since July to attack online retailers at scale, breaching at least 27 companies in a five-day span and launching over 100 attacks. The operation reportedly stole more than 600,000 valid card records from two companies and planted skimmer malware on five others, using three tools—Strix for scanning, Cairn for exploitation, and Hermes, powered by Claude Opus 4.6, for orchestration and tactical decisions.

Job seeker's two-year effort flags nearly 60,000 fake LinkedIn listings

Jay Jones, laid off from advertising in 2023, says he has helped get almost 60,000 fraudulent job postings removed from the internet, mostly on LinkedIn, and has flagged roughly 7,000 suspicious profiles. He found scammers using stolen photos, hijacked dormant verified accounts, and fake postings on real company pages, some powered by AI to personalize pitches and harvest fees or personal data like Social Security numbers.

Claude Code's AGENTS.md support requires telemetry to be enabled

A developer testing Claude Code 2.1.277's new AGENTS.md support found the file only loads when a remote feature flag called tengu_agents_md_mod returns true, which depends on telemetry or nonessential traffic being enabled. Setting CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_NONESSENTIAL_TRAFFIC or DISABLE_TELEMETRY to 1 silently disables the AGENTS.md loader, with no warning to the user, a behavior tracked in GitHub issue #95690.

NHTSA opens probe into Comma.ai's openpilot driving assist after fatal crashes

US safety regulator NHTSA has launched an investigation into Comma.ai's aftermarket openpilot driver-assistance system following five reported crashes, two of them fatal, resulting in three deaths and up to 11 injuries. The agency says the incidents involved the system failing to detect or respond to slow or stopped vehicles ahead in the same lane, and notes some crashes may have involved modified 'forked' versions of the software, including one fatal Louisiana crash running a fork called FrogPilot.

Samsung halts SmartThings fridge update in Korea after malfunctions

Samsung paused a SmartThings software update for its smart refrigerators in Korea after owners reported units losing power, screens failing, doors not auto-opening, and internal lights not turning on, leading to spoiled food. A Samsung representative confirmed on the company's forum that an error occurred during testing of the update and that emergency repairs were being handled through service centers.
