Security experts weigh password managers vs authenticator apps for 2FA storage

Security guidance is comparing two ways of handling two-factor authentication codes: storing them inside a password manager alongside saved passwords, or keeping them in a separate dedicated authenticator app. Password managers combine both login factors in one vault for convenience, while authenticator apps keep the second factor physically separate from the password itself, generating or sending one-time codes through methods like text messages, push notifications, email, or in-app codes.

Apple Pay adds redesigned checkout, Amex rewards payments, and Tap to Share in iOS 27

Apple has rolled out several Apple Pay updates alongside iOS 27, including a redesigned checkout screen that lets users swipe between cards and view rewards, balances and pay-later details more easily. Apple and American Express also launched a partnership allowing customers to redeem Membership Rewards points directly at Apple Pay checkout, valued at 0.7 cents per point. Additionally, a new Tap to Share feature extends Tap to Pay on iPhone, letting customers share contact info, shipping details and loyalty data with participating merchants in-store.

U.S. government files brief backing Apple in Supreme Court fight with Epic

The U.S. government and several legal and business groups have submitted amicus briefs to the Supreme Court supporting Apple's bid to overturn a civil contempt ruling stemming from its App Store dispute with Epic Games. The contempt finding arose after Apple began charging a 27% commission on purchases made through external links, which Epic argued violated a prior injunction. Apple maintains the injunction's original wording never explicitly barred such a commission, and that lower courts wrongly invoked the 'spirit' of the order rather than its text.

Microsoft hands next Halo game to Activision, cuts 268 Xbox roles

Microsoft told Team Xbox staff in a memo called 'Continuing Our Reset' that it is eliminating 268 positions across Halo Studios and other first-party studios, and forming a new team distinct from Call of Duty to develop the next Halo title under Activision. A smaller group at Halo Studios will remain to support existing games and the current community, ending its sole stewardship of the franchise since 2010.

Apple lets iOS 27 users hide or swap iMessage's audio recording button

iOS 27 adds a settings option letting users replace the iMessage waveform icon—used to start voice recordings—with a microphone icon for dictation, or remove the button entirely. The change addresses a common complaint about accidentally tapping the button while typing, which triggers a voice recording and stops any playing music. Singer Justin Bieber had drawn attention to the issue in a viral Instagram post criticizing the button's placement.

Trump proposes renaming 'AI' to 'super intelligence' in government use

At the UN General Assembly, President Trump said he wants future US government documents to refer to artificial intelligence as 'super intelligence' or 'SI,' arguing the word 'artificial' makes the technology sound fake. He had previously run informal social media polls asking followers to choose between terms like 'superior intelligence' and 'super intelligence,' with 'super' narrowly winning. No formal executive order enacting the change has been issued.

Apple opens iOS 27.2 public beta with redesigned Health app and Quest Diagnostics lab booking

Apple has released the first public beta of iOS 27.2, following two developer betas, bringing the redesigned Health app first shown at the iPhone 18 Pro event to public testers. The update also enables scheduling and paying for lab tests through Quest Diagnostics directly in the Health app, with a listed price of $119. Other changes carried over from the developer beta include dual capture in Group FaceTime, expanded Siri language support, and interface tweaks to Podcasts and Apple Music.

Data centre industry weighs replacing copper wiring with optical connections

Digital Realty's chief technology officer Chris Sharp says the data centre industry is moving away from copper for internal networking, though not electrical power or cooling systems. A typical 100MW facility uses around 400 tonnes of copper overall, with up to 20 tonnes used specifically in the wiring that connects servers together. Sharp argues this copper wiring between GPUs and CPUs is now a bottleneck limiting performance.
