Apple will let third-party developers use Apple Intelligence models to empower their apps

Apple today announced a new framework, called Foundation Models, that will allow developers to access the same models that power on-device Apple Intelligence. This will let third-party apps easily offer AI features. Because these models run locally using the Apple Silicon chips on your iPhone or iPad, they can be made available wholly offline, and with no associated cloud API costs. This is the first time Apple is giving developers direct access to the power of these on-device foundation model

Snapchat announces that new lightweight AR Spectacles will be launching next year

At Augmented World Expo 2025, Snapchat announced a next-generation version of Snap Spectacles. These new spectacles should have a more lightweight and immersive design, and will be launching to the public next year. I had the opportunity to go hands on with the fifth generation Snap Spectacles towards the end of last year, and they were quite impressive. That generation of Spectacles was only available for developers, and weren’t planned to launch to the public. They were also fair bit bulky, b

iPadOS 26 just made the entry level iPad the best value in the lineup, here’s why [Video]

The best part of Apple’s keynote yesterday, for me, was the introduction of iPadOS 26. Apple finally opened up the floodgates and gave iPad users everything they wanted. We have an actual multitasking window manager, new menu toolbars, better background tasks, and a revamped files app. All this has transformed how people will view iPads moving forward. But the fantastic thing is that this is not just reserved for the $1300+ iPad Pro; this now works on the $299 entry-level iPad. Apple just made t

Last Monday, towards the end of the WWDC25 keynote, Craig Federighi said that Apple had “expanded” its vision for Swift Assist, and it would now allow developers to bring their Large Language Model of choice directly to Xcode. Now, we know more about how this is going to work. What is Swift Assist? This was a feature that Apple announced during last year’s WWDC, but hadn’t released until now, on Xcode 26 beta. Initially, as explained by Apple, it was going to serve as: “a companion for all o

Apple just gave developers access to its new local AI models, here’s how they perform

One of the very first announcements on this year’s WWDC was that for the first time, third‑party developers will get to tap directly into Apple’s on‑device AI with the new Foundation Models framework. But how do these models actually compare against what’s already out there? With the new Foundation Models framework, third-party developers can now build on the same on-device AI stack used by Apple’s native apps. In other words, this means that developers will now be able to integrate AI feature

There's a Steven Universe sequel series in the works at Prime Video

It's been five years since the Steven Universe saga ended, via a final season and movie that took the story into the future. Now, it's coming back, according to a report by Deadline . Prime Video is working on a sequel series, with franchise creator Rebecca Sugar in tow as an executive producer (and hopefully as a songwriter.) This doesn't look to be a straight sequel series, in that the focus is shifting away from Steven, the Crystal Gems and Beach City. Instead, the tentatively-titled Steven

Apple’s Craig Federighi on the long road to the iPad’s Mac-like multitasking

CUPERTINO, Calif.—When Apple Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi introduced the new multitasking UI in iPadOS 26 at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference this week, he did it the same way he introduced the Calculator app for the iPad last year, or timers in the iPad's Clock app the year before—with a hint of sarcasm. "Wow," Federighi enthuses in a lightly exaggerated tone about an hour and 19 minutes into a 90-minute presentation. "More windows, a pointier poin

Sweden Investigates New Cable Break Under Baltic Sea

The European Union vowed on Friday to increase security in the Baltic Sea as the Swedish authorities said they were investigating a new cable break, the latest example of damage to underwater infrastructure in the region. The European Commission, the bloc’s executive arm, said it would take new steps to prevent and detect threats to submarine cables, which carry internet traffic and transmit electricity. The severing of several undersea cables in the Baltic Sea in recent months has raised conc

Alexa Is Getting a Major AI Upgrade From Amazon. What We Know So Far

Panay joined Amazon in 2023 after spending decades at Microsoft, where he helped shape the Surface product line. The event is expected to preview Alexa's long-r

Game Developers Fear Anti-Trans Measures Could Hit Their Industry Next

Ashley Poprik has never been the model for a video game character. As a writer on projects like Spider-Man 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, they work on games, not as characters within them. In 2023, however, a cabal of angry gamers was convinced otherwise. They were furious over how Spider-Man 2’s Mary Jane looked; more specifically, they complained, she simply wasn’t hot enough. The problem, these gamers falsely claimed, was that Poprik—then a writing intern with no ability to change a charac

Amazon surpasses Walmart in revenue for the first time

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy speaks during the New York Times DealBook Summit in the Appel Room at the Jazz At Lincoln Center in New York City on Nov. 30, 2022. Rivian inches closer to profitability but warns ‘changes to government policies’ could hurt

Rivian’s cost-cutting measures have gotten it a lot closer to profitability, but the company is warning that 2025 could still be a challenging year — especially because of the whorl of uncertainty caused by the new Trump administration. The company announced Thursday its fourth-quarter and full-year 2024 financial results, and along with it, shared plans to deliver between 46,000 and 51,000 EVs across 2025. Rivian cautioned that “changes to government policies and regulations, and a challenging

Brace yourself: The era of 'citizen developers' creating apps is here, thanks to AI

ZDNET Generative AI (Gen AI) has eliminated much of the grunt work of building applications for professional software developers. Now, the question is: can citizen developers also benefit from this new paradigm in code creation? Some experts certainly think so. Over the coming year, citizen developers will deliver 30% of Gen AI-infused automation apps, predicted Craig Le Clair, principal analyst with Forrester. Though OpenAI has not revealed the number of paid customers with an active subscription to ChatGPT Plus or ChatGPT Pro. On the B2B front, ChatGPT’s enterprise plans are growing nicely: OpenAI now has 2 million paying enterprise users

Someone just released a PS3 emulator for Android (Update: And it’s gone)

Nick Fernandez / Android Authority Update (0:24 AM EST, February 20, 2025): The aPS3e PS3 emulator made headlines this week as the first functional PS3 emulator on Android. Unfortunately, the app and developer have seemingly disappeared. The project GitHub page and developer Aenu’s account have both disappeared, now offering a 404 error screen. This comes after reports that this new emulator actually used code from the open-source RPCS3 emulator. Furthermore, the developer was asking for $2,00

This Switch emulator dev is working on a (legit) PS3 emulator for Android

Hadlee Simons / Android Authority TL;DR Sudachi developer Jarrod Norwell is working on a new Android port of RPCS3. He is also behind Folium, one of the few emulators on iOS. There’s no playable build yet, but aPS3e has already proved native PS3 emulation on Android is possible. The barrier to PS3 emulation on Android has never been thinner. Although the initial aPS3e app has been removed from GitHub amid licensing controversies, there’s now new hope from a familiar Australian developer. Cal
