Amazon is shutting down its third-party Android app store

The Amazon Appstore will no longer be available on Android as of August 20, 2025. After that date, apps from the digital storefront "are not guaranteed to operate" on Android hardware; however, they can continue to be used on devices like the Fire TV and Fire Tablets. The Coins program, Amazon's virtual currency for some Appstore app and in-app purchases, will also end on that same date. Coins will no longer be available for purchase beginning today. The Appstore was Amazon's effort to get in o

A $599 iPhone 16e is a cruel joke

The $599 iPhone 16e is many things, but don't you dare call it a budget phone. I hesitate to even call it "cheap." As a successor to the $429 iPhone SE, it's hard not to see the 16e as a disappointment. Sure, it's $200 less than the vanilla iPhone 16 (which I argued was a great deal at launch), and the 16e also packs in the latest A18 chip with support for Apple Intelligence. But it's no longer a small phone, and it pushes Apple's cheaper iPhone option well beyond $500. That's something we'll li

Apiiro unveils free scanner to detect malicious code merges

Security researchers at Apiiro have released two free, open-source tools designed to detect and block malicious code before they are added to software projects to curb supply chain attacks. The two tools consist of a comprehensive ruleset for Semgrep and Opengrep designed to detect malicious code patterns with minimal false positives and PRevent, a GitHub-integrated scanner, that detects and alerts on suspicious code in pull requests (PRs). According to Apiiro's security researcher Matan Gilad

Industry analyst predicts iPhones to get 9% price hike amidst US tariffs - and I believe it

Jason Hiner/ZDNET The latest US tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump have put Apple at a bit of a crossroads. With multiple tariffs impacting countries worldwide, including a 10% charge on all imports from China, electronics makers like Apple will soon have to decide if they'll take the brunt of the damage or redirect it to end consumers by increasing the price of goods. That includes the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and more. Also: Apple launches $599 iPhone 16e: Best features, specs, and

How I used this portable, ink-free printer to declutter my workstation (and it's 60% off)

ZDNET's key takeaways This battery-powered printer is perfect for taking on the road, and it connects to devices using Bluetooth or USB Thermal printing means there are no ink cartridges to replace, but the downside is the printer cannot use regular paper Installing the Windows and Mac drivers is a bit painful and unintuitive. $69.91 at Amazon I like to joke that whenever someone asks me if I own a printer, I say, "I don't need one where I live." When they inevitably ask where that is, I repl

I replaced my Kindle and iPad within hours of using this tablet (and it's on sale)

ZDNET's key takeaways The TCL Tab 10 Nxtpaper 5G is a full-color, color paper, and ink paper tablet available at Verizon for $239. It's a great entertainment tablet for daily use that also functions very well as an e-reader. Although the screen is versatile, don't expect the graphics to compare to those on an iPad or other high-end tablets. View now at Verizon Reading has always been my favorite way to unwind before bed, and for 13 years, Kindles were my go-to e-readers. But after trying TCL'

5 products Apple quietly killed while it rolled out iPhone 16e this week

Jason Hiner/ZDNET Apple this week launched one big thing and removed five smaller things in the process. With the unveiling of the new iPhone 16e, the company's entry-level handset that brings modernized processing power and AI capabilities downmarket, Apple also did away with several familiar products and services -- some more obvious than others. Also: What does the 'e' in iPhone 16e stand for? These five products weren't sacrifices per se, but their removal was integral to streamlining the

I changed these 11 iPhone settings and improved its battery life dramatically

Kerry Wan/ZDNET With the way we use our iPhones these days, it can be hard to make it through a single day on a full charge. A few FaceTime calls, some text messaging, and opening Maps a few times, and you could already be 25% down. If you've experienced this problem, you're not alone. These phones can be very power-hungry -- even the more affordable iPhone SE 4 has battery issues. The problem is made worse by all the different apps, features, and settings vying for battery life. And the kicke

You can’t build a moat with AI (redux)

Last spring, we wrote an article called You can’t build a moat with AI. That post argued that prompt engineering, while important, would be difficult to defend over time given how easy it is to experiment with LLMs. As a result, you have to focus on the quality of data your application has access to and your use of that data to differentiate yourself. Everything we said in that post has held true, but the release of models like DeepSeek R1 and o3-mini have brought the concerns about AI applicat

Wheel of Time Reveals the Absolutely Wild Magic Battle That Opens Season 3

The Wheel of Time returns for its third season March 13, and here’s a big sign that Prime Video is as excited for its arrival as fans are: the streamer just shared the first 11 minutes of the premiere, a sequence which happens to contain the most face-melting fight scene the show has ever engaged in. And yes, we saw that climactic season two battle; this brawl, which involves rival Aes Sedai members and some extremely vicious channeling of the One Power, easily kicks its ass. You only have a we

Apple Is Probably Planning to Make Its Own WiFi Chip For the iPhone 17

Apple rumors keep the world turning. Some people might say it’s gravity, but it’s Apple. Forget the Farmer’s Almanac; most farming relies on the iPhone release schedule. The iPhone 16e was revealed yesterday and brought a new future for Apple’s hardware, one where it makes all of its cellular chips. The iPhone 16e debuted the C1 modem, its first ever homemade, bespoke, perfectly spiced 5G chip. Reports today tell us that there are more chips on the way. The iPhone 17, expected much later this y

Call of Duty Just Launched Its Thinnest Multiplayer Map in Season 2 Reloaded

If you fancy playing Black Ops 6 as a walking bullet hose, you'll fit right in on the newest multiplayer map. As Season 2 Reloaded adds new maps, modes, events and guns to the latest Call of Duty game, the standout addition is the new strike map Bullet. Two teams of six will fight across (and on top of) a moving bullet train in various core multiplayer game modes. Developer Treyarch is well-known for its three-lane map design, but Bullet is adopting a new, experimental one-lane design, maximiz

Amazon remembers it has an Android app store, kills it

After 14 years of trying and failing to gain a smartphone foothold, Amazon has announced it will discontinue its app store. Anyone who has content in Amazon's store will be able to access it for now, but all bets are off beginning on August 20, 2025. As part of the pull-back, the company is also discontinuing the Amazon Coins digital currency. The Amazon Appstore made waves when it launched in 2011, offering an alternative to what at the time was known as the Android Market. Amazon even scored

In India, Apple’s iPhone 16e faces stiff competition from older models

On Wednesday, Apple unveiled the iPhone 16e. The model replaces both the iPhone SE and iPhone 14 in the company’s lineup. The new handset is the least expensive member of the iPhone 16 lineup, aiming at emerging markets, including India. The world’s second largest smartphone market (behind China) has fueled significant iPhone sales, with Apple recently cracking the top five vendors in India. A week ahead of the iPhone 16e’s release, however, it’s unclear what impact the device will have on this

Stalkerware apps Cocospy and Spyic are exposing phone data of millions of people

A security vulnerability in a pair of phone-monitoring apps is exposing the personal data of millions of people who have the apps unwittingly installed on their devices, according to a security researcher who found the flaw. The bug allows anyone to access the personal data — messages, photos, call logs, and more — exfiltrated from any phone or tablet compromised by Cocospy and Spyic, two differently branded mobile stalkerware apps that share largely the same source code. The bug also exposes t

Your Android phone could have stalkerware — here’s how to remove it

Consumer-grade spyware apps that covertly and continually monitor your private messages, photos, phone calls, and real-time location are an ongoing problem for Android users. This guide can help you identify and remove common surveillance apps from your Android phone, including TheTruthSpy, Cocospy and Spyic, among others. Consumer-grade spyware apps are frequently sold under the guise of child monitoring or family-tracking software, but are referred to as “stalkerware” and “spouseware” for th

Apple’s iPhone 16e seems boring, and that’s exactly why I want one

Apple I might be the one and only person who’s genuinely excited about the iPhone 16e. On paper, there’s nothing crazy about Apple’s new mid-range phone — it only has one camera, brings back the notch for Face ID, and comes in two bland colorways, black and white. But hear me out — that’s why I’m excited. For the first time in a long time, it feels like Apple is making a phone for people who don’t want to be completely glued to their phones, and I think that will make the iPhone 16e a success.

Amazon pulls the plug on its Android app store that you never used anyway

Joe Hindy / Android Authority TL;DR Amazon will shut down its Android device app store in August 2025. Users will no longer be able to download or use apps from the Appstore on Android after the deadline. Amazon Fire devices like the Fire TV and the Fire Tablet. The Google Play Store is the premier source for downloading and installing apps on Android flagships, but the platform’s open nature also allows third-party app stores to exist. The Amazon Appstore was one of those popular options ou

Apple’s latest AirTag feature now supported by the busiest U.S. airline

Starting with iOS 18.2, Apple has enhanced its AirTag item trackers with a special feature that makes locating lost luggage easier than ever. The “Share Item Location” capability requires adoption by airlines to work, and this week the busiest airline in America has announced its support. American Airlines ranks third in terms of fleet size and revenue, but the company flies more passengers per day than any other U.S. airline. For that reason, American Airlines’ use of Apple’s Share Item Locat

Apple currently only able to detect Pegasus spyware in half of infected iPhones

NSO’s Pegasus spyware is one of the most frightening privacy threats an iPhone owner can face. Without you taking any action at all, it’s able to completely take over your phone, accessing almost all of the personal data stored on it, and some versions have been able to activate cameras and microphones. Pegasus exploits zero-day vulnerabilities – security holes Apple doesn’t yet know about – but the iPhone maker has another way to fight back … Apple aims to detect Pegasus spyware iOS includes

Great cameras, not Apple Intelligence, is what people want from an iPhone 16e

After much anticipation, Apple finally announced the iPhone 16e yesterday. Looking at its position in the company's lineup, the 16e is a headscratcher. My colleague Ian Carlos Campbell already wrote about how strange it is that the phone is missing MagSafe, a feature universally loved by Apple users. However, the omission that stands out the most to me is that the iPhone 16e doesn't come with more than a single rear camera, and no, 2x telephoto cropping doesn't count. Sure, if you put the 16e a

Apple launches $599 iPhone 16e: Best features, specs, and everything else to know

Apple It was a little more than two years ago when Apple refreshed its entry-level, low-cost iPhone model, ideal for people who didn't need all of the bells and whistles but still wanted to be part of the Apple ecosystem -- the iPhone SE. After a two-year hiatus, the next big refresh has arrived. Also: What does the 'e' in iPhone 16e stand for? On Wednesday, Apple launched the iPhone 16e via an online press release rather than the usual product event. The iPhone 16e received several massive u

Apple's Lower-Priced iPhone 16E Could Be Its Biggest Opportunity of 2025

Apple's $599 iPhone 16E is the biggest refresh ever for the company's lower-cost phone, formerly called the iPhone SE, and it couldn't arrive at a better time. With generative AI requiring beefier specs, and US tariffs on imports from China possibly bringing an increase in costs, Apple's entry-level iPhone might provide enough new features to be worth the upgrade from an earlier iPhone SE. But those prior iPhone SE owners will be facing a substantial price hike, with the iPhone 16E costing $170

Apple iPhone 16e (2025): Specs, Price, Release Date

Apple has launched a new iPhone, but what was expected to be a new iPhone SE announcement this morning has turned into a completely new product line: the iPhone 16e. This isn't exactly a follow-up to the iPhone SE from three years ago, though it officially replaces it. Also gone is the iPhone 14, meaning Apple's iPhone lineup now consists of the iPhone 16e, iPhone 15, and iPhone 16 series. Apple announced the new device online without much fanfare. The iPhone 16e is available for preorder start
