GoKawiilIn an environment in which everything costs more, the major wireless phone carriers have introduced plans to draw in customers who want to reduce what millions of people see as an essential expense. In recent months, AT&T introduced its modular Build-A-Plan, and Verizon cut prices and then rolled out its Simplicity plan.
Now it’s T-Mobile’s turn.
Starting Thursday, the company is adding a new installment plan for phone purchases, rebranding its slate of unlimited wireless plans and offering student plans with the option to add 5G home internet service.
An extended phone flex
Currently, when you purchase a new phone through T-Mobile, you can buy it outright or pay a monthly installment over 24 months. The new Equipment Installment Plan Flex 36 option lets you make those payments over 36 months, reducing the monthly amount.
What makes EIP Flex 36 different from the company’s EIP Standard plan (which remains an option as EIP Standard 36) is that all upfront costs are rolled into those three years of payments — the device, taxes and fees — making the initial cost zero. Even with most zero percent finance plans, customers must pay taxes on the cost of the phone and pay an activation fee.
T-Mobile’s press release says the EIP Flex 36 option for “well-qualified customers” has, “for a limited time, 0% APR.” It’s not clear if that means interest will go up sometime during the life of the installment plan; when I reached out to a T-Mobile representative for clarification, they reiterated the reduced monthly payments but did not define the timeline of when interest might kick in.
Going forward, the financing options for new customers will be to choose a 36-month EIP plan or pay the full cost of the device. If you want to pay off a phone earlier than the full term, that’s an option, too.
