He made the comments as Australia weighs a Digital Duty of Care bill that would require platforms to prompt users to disable ranking algorithms.
Instagram is renaming its 'AI creator' label to 'AI-generated profile' to more clearly flag accounts featuring synthetic humans. The platform will also reduce visibility for accounts that fail to self-label as AI-generated, blocking their posts from being recommended to non-followers in Reels and Explore, though owners can appeal.
Meta agreed to pay $16.7 billion to resolve a consolidated lawsuit brought by 51 state attorneys general over allegations its platforms fostered social media addiction among young users. The removed data showed teens viewed suicide, self-harm and eating-disorder content, as well as other 'non-recommendable' material, at significantly higher rates than adults. Mosseri said he never asked to be shielded from such information and understood lawyers' role as reviewing documents for legal accuracy.
