Noise cancelling a fan

Indoor air quality is important. It increases comfort. Potentially, it might improve cognition as well as reducing infection risk in a space. And it would be cool to have Swiss quality air in my house! One can increase air quality by improving ventilation. One way to do this is by turning on a fan near your window. The CDC recommends facing them towards the outside to exhaust air out the house. (I will be writing more about this later). When it comes to fans, the stronger the better. But there

My Favorite iOS 26 Feature Can Block Spam Calls. Here's How It Works

Apple released iOS 26 on Monday, a few months after the company announced it at the June Worldwide Developers Conference. The update includes a Liquid Glass redesign, new ringtones and lots of hidden features for your iPhone. It also has a new call screening feature that lets you stop spam calls from bothering you. Call screening isn't an Apple Intelligence feature, so any iOS 26-compatible iPhone, like the iPhone 14 Pro, can use it. I enabled the feature early in the beta process, and my iPhon

I found a 4K action camera that competes with my GoPro (and it's on sale)

DJI Osmo Action 4. Adrian Kingsley-Hughes/ZDNET Multiple DJI Osmo Action 4 packages are on sale at Amazon. The Standard Combo has been discounted to $249, the Adventure Combo has dropped to $349, and the Essentials Combo is down to $239. DJI might not be the first name on people's lips when it comes to action cameras, but the company that's better known for its drones also has a really solid line of action cameras. While it's no longer the latest model in its lineup, the Osmo Action 4 camera,

Optimizing ClickHouse for Intel's 280 core processors

This is a guest post from Jiebin Sun, Zhiguo Zhou, Wangyang Guo and Tianyou Li, performance optimization engineers at Intel Shanghai. Intel's latest processor generations are pushing the number of cores in a server to unprecedented levels - from 128 P-cores per socket in Granite Rapids to 288 E-cores per socket in Sierra Forest, with future roadmaps targeting 200+ cores per socket. These numbers multiply on multi-socket systems, such servers may consist of 400 and more cores. The paradigm of "m

Famous cognitive psychology experiments that failed to replicate

Marco Giancotti , August 21, 2025 Cover image: Photo by Rebecca Freeman, Unsplash TL;DR is the part in bold below. The field of psychology had a big crisis in the 2010s, when many widely accepted results turned out to be much less solid than previously thought. It's called the replication crisis, because labs around the world tried and failed to replicate, in new experiments, previous results published by their original "discoverers". In other words, many reported psychological effects were ei

DJI's new mini drone is a powerhouse with an upgraded camera, but I have two concerns

DJI Mini 5 Pro ZDNET's key takeaways The DJI Mini 5 Pro is available in the UK and EU at £689/€799 respectively. Its camera has a one-inch sensor for superior shooting in low-light conditions, and the drone is packed with obstacle avoidance sensors. It's not yet available in the US, and its battery life at a theoretical runtime of 21 minutes is a lot lower than its predecessor. View now at DJI Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. The Mini Pro drones are my all-time favorite

Is Data Modeling Dead?

Ok, not going to lie, I rarely find anything of value in the dregs of r/dataengineering, mostly I fear, because it’s %90 freshers with little to no experience. These green behind the ear know-it-all engineers who’ve never written a line of Perl, SSH’d into a server, and have no idea what a LAMP stack is. Weak. Sad. We used to program our way to glory, up hill both ways in the snow. All you do is script kiddy some Python code through Cursor. A recent post on Data Modeling, specifically that dat

Americans want AI to stay out of their personal lives

A new study from Pew suggests that Americans aren’t particularly optimistic about AI. A full 50 percent of respondents said they were more concerned than excited about the use of AI in their daily lives. That’s down ever so slightly from 52 percent in 2023, but it’s up significantly from 37 percent in 2021. Americans expressed a number of concerns about AI, chief among them that it will negatively impact our ability to think creatively and form meaningful relationships with other people. Just 1

From Qubits to Qubucks: Quantum Digital Currency

Quantum computing is often discussed in terms of its potential to revolutionize scientific discovery and to challenge cryptographic paradigms [1], but it could also change our relationship with money. By using quantum states, quantum currency could solve the double-spending problem and address throughput issues associated with distributed ledgers (blockchain), paving the way for the digital cash of the future. Digital Banking vs. Digital Currency To understand quantum currency, we should first

Apple Photos app corrupts images

The Apple Photos app sometimes corrupts images when importing from my camera. I just wanted to make a blog post about it in case anyone else runs into the problem. I’ve seen other references to this online, but most of the people gave up trying to fix it, and none of them went as far as I did to debug the issue. I’ll try to describe the problem, and the things I’ve tried to do to fix it. But also note that I’ve (sort of) given up on the Photos app too. Since I can’t trust it to import photos fr

Garmin's new smartwatch for kids costs more than the Apple Watch SE

The Bounce 2 still offers tracking and communication features, both powered by an LTE connection. The exterior has been completely redesigned, with a rounded 1.2-inch AMOLED display. This PS5 Update Lets DualSense Controllers Pair With Multiple Devices at the Same Time

All you PlayStation 5 players can now pair your wireless DualSense controllers with up to four devices at a time and toggle between them. For some time, you've been able to pair your DualSense controllers not just with PS5s and other PlayStation consoles, but also with PCs, Macs, smartphones and other Bluetooth devices. Americans Want More Control Over the AI in Their Lives, Pew Survey Finds

Artificial intelligence is everywhere now, powering song recommendations on Spotify, filling inboxes with AI-written emails, and showing up in classrooms and workplaces around the world. You may not feel like you get much say in where and how AI shows up in your life. You're not the only one. That's the takeaway from a Pew Research Center report published Wednesday, which finds that six out of 10 Americans (61%) want more control over how AI is used in their lives. More than half (57%) say they

Upgrade your everyday carry setup with these 22 picks

What we carry says a lot about what’s important to us, who we are, and who we aspire to be. This fall, it’s worth examining what you bring with you every day and thinking about how you could refine it. Perhaps you carry too much, and a utility pouch that’s just a bit bigger than a wallet could reduce (or at least help organize) the clutter in your pockets or purse. Or perhaps you want to be more prepared for what the day could bring, with compact tools like a notepad, pen, and maybe a multitool.

Icarus raises $6.1M to take on space’s “warehouse work” with embodied-AI robots

Icarus Robotics cofounders Ethan Barajas and Jamie Palmer spent hours interviewing astronauts about what it was like working in space as they homed in on their startup idea. Their big takeaway: the work was often more cargo logistics than cutting-edge science. “We’re Amazon warehouse workers with PhDs,” one astronaut said. If an experiment takes two hours on station, the person continued, the first ninety minutes are spent just moving around cargo and preparing tools. It’s a dismal waste of to
