Federal ‘click to cancel subscriptions’ rule struck down in court [U]

A “click to cancel” law was last month passed in California, and now the FTC has ratified a federal rule designed to achieve the same goal. The idea of both is to force companies to make it as easy to cancel an online or app subscription as it is to sign up in the first place. Update: Following a court challenge, the US Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals has vacated the rule. See update at the end … Both laws were introduced in response to sketchy practices by companies designed to make it as dif

Heavy AI use makes you more likely to burn out and quit your job, new study finds

Boris Zhitkov/Getty The adoption of AI tools in the workplace is making employees more productive, but new research from freelance hiring firm Upwork suggests it might also be hurting their mental health. Following a survey of 2,500 workers (including executives, full-time employees, and freelancers) across multiple countries, the research showed that the most devoted users of AI tools, including agents, are also 88% more likely to experience burnout and twice as likely to quit, compared to th

Phrase origin: Why do we "call" functions?

On StackExchange, someone asks why programmers talk about “calling” a function. Several possible allusions spring to mind: Calling a function is like calling on a friend — we go, we stay a while, we come back. Calling a function is like calling for a servant — a summoning to perform a task. Calling a function is like making a phone call — we ask a question and get an answer from outside ourselves. The true answer seems to be the middle one — “calling” as in “calling up, summoning” — but indi

‘People Are Going to Die’: A Malnutrition Crisis Looms in the Wake of USAID Cuts

Few lifesaving tools are as effective as ready-to-use therapeutic foods, known as RUTFs, which are specially designed to treat severe malnutrition and often resemble fortified peanut butter. Despite announcing a $50 million pledged to fund RUTFs earlier this summer, the Trump administration's deep cuts to foreign assistance have wreaked havoc on RUTF distribution globally, and the State Department hasn’t placed orders with leading suppliers this year. Experts say the disruptions will result in m

China Has Attempted What Might Be the First-Ever Orbital Refueling of a Satellite

Two Chinese satellites have rendezvoused with one another more than 20,000 miles above the Earth in what analysts believe is the first high-altitude attempt at orbital refueling. China’s Shijian-21 and Shijian-25 satellites, known as SJ-21 and SJ-25 for short, likely docked together in geosynchronous orbit sometime last week. This is the conclusion of multiple civilian satellite trackers using open source imagery showing the two satellites coming together, then becoming indistinguishable as a s

Scientists Discover Secret Weapon That Allows Pythons to Digest Bones

Pythons are notorious for their eating habits. After suffocating their prey with their lithe bodies, these large snakes swallow the animal whole. Now, researchers have shed new light on the cellular mechanisms that allow them to digest entire skeletons. The study, presented July 9 at the Society for Experimental Biology Annual Conference in Belgium and published in the Journal of Experimental Biology, investigated the intestinal cells of Burmese pythons. Adult males can grow to be 10 to 16 feet

Tim Cook has a new deputy but Apple’s next CEO is probably still someone else

Jeff Williams, often considered Tim Cook’s successor, is leaving Apple. Sabih Khan, a 30-year veteran of the company, is Apple’s next chief operating officer. Does Khan taking Cook’s old job make him CEO-designate? Jeff Williams retiring certainly clears the path for Khan to climb up the succession planning ladder. However, I would wager that Apple’s CEO succession plan isn’t changing. Jeff Williams retires and Sabih Khan steps up Jeff Williams, who has been called Tim Cook’s Tim Cook, has alw

FTC’s click-to-cancel rule has been struck down by federal judges at the eleventh hour

In 2024, the FTC was set to implement the "click to cancel" rule, which would have placed requirements on companies to be forthright about the terms and conditions and exit options for their subscriptions. Since that time, the agency has become a less independent part of the executive branch and in May, it delayed enforcing some parts of this rule to July 14. Today, the entire plan appears to be dead in the water after judges in the US Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals decided to vacate the rule.
