SonicWall finds no SSLVPN zero-day, links ransomware attacks to 2024 flaw

SonicWall says that recent Akira ransomware attacks exploiting Gen 7 firewalls with SSLVPN enabled are exploiting an older vulnerability rather than a zero-day flaw. The company says that the attackers are targeting CVE-2024-40766, an unauthorized access flaw fixed in August 2024. "We now have high confidence that the recent SSLVPN activity is not connected to a zero-day vulnerability," reads the update on the SonicWall bulletin published this week. "Instead, there is a significant correlatio

Firefox Focus won me over in just 10 mins - why it's my new default mobile browser

Jack Wallen / Elyse Betters Picaro / ZDNET ZDNET's key takeaways Firefox Focus is a security and privacy-focused mobile browser. This browser offers a minimal UI and maximum privacy features. Firefox Focus is available for both Android and iOS. I've run the gamut of web browsers on Android, and every time I think I've found "the one," I discover a reason not to use it. That reason might be a cluttered UI, a lack of options, or not enough security. Recently, however, I came across a browser

ReVault flaws let hackers bypass Windows login on Dell laptops

ControlVault3 firmware vulnerabilities impacting over 100 Dell laptop models can allow attackers to bypass Windows login and install malware that persists across system reinstalls. Dell ControlVault is a hardware-based security solution that stores passwords, biometric data, and security codes within firmware on a dedicated daughterboard, known as the Unified Security Hub (USH). The five vulnerabilities, reported by Cisco's Talos security division and dubbed "ReVault," affect both the ControlV

Yes, you need a firewall on Linux - here's why and which to use

JuSun/Getty ZDNET's key takeaways Linux is highly secure, but you should still have a firewall. You should know if your ISP's hardware (gateway) uses a firewall. One of the easiest Linux firewalls is UFW and its GUI sidekick, GUFW. I've been using Linux for nearly 30 years. Over those years, I've experienced only one security issue (a rootkit on a server I inherited). The reason for that is Linux's heightened security. Out of the box, it includes a tight permissions system and security mech

Elon Musk Accused of Stiffing Small Businesses for Millions of Dollars, Causing Some to File for Bankruptcy

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the richest man in the world, has allegedly been stiffing small businesses, causing some of them to file for bankruptcy. According to an investigation by CNN, contractors have filed liens — claims of possession of property until a debt is paid off — for more than $110 million against Tesla over the last five years. The company still owes dozens of businesses more than $24 million. Worst of all, many of these firms are mom-and-pop operations, making them extremely vulnerabl

Venture firm CRV raises $750M, downsizing after returning capital to investors

CRV has secured $750 million toward the 55-year-old venture firm’s twentieth flagship fund, it announced on Friday. The new fund is smaller than the $1 billion early-stage fund CRV closed in the fall of 2022. At that time, the firm also announced a $500 million second Select fund, a capital pool for backing late-stage rounds of existing portfolio companies. It’s no surprise that CRV is not raising a late-stage fund as part of its new fundraise. Last year, the firm told The New York Times it wa

VC industry has become a better career for women over the past 7 years

In Brief Women are making strides in the venture capital world, according to a new report published by the nonprofit All Raise and as first reported by the Wall Street Journal. All Raise released a report that said 18.6% of the top roles at leading VC firms are held by women, which is double what it was in 2018. The survey also found that many women (a quarter of survey respondents) were promoted last year and that investors were still interested in backing underrepresented founders (75% of in

Chillin' by the Fire is a relaxing, co-op campfire sim that's out today on Nintendo Switch 2

Thursday's Nintendo Direct showcased some interesting games, but none seemed more relaxing than one called Chillin' by the Fire. This is a campfire sim from Oink Games in which you'll build and grow a fire. You'll split and stack firewood, dry out wet logs before adding them to your blaze and fan the flames by blowing on 'em. It's important not to have too little or too much wood in a fire at any given time, and you might have to deal with elemental factors like low temperatures on a snowy mount

This long-requested Galaxy upgrade might finally arrive on the S26 Ultra

C. Scott Brown / Android Authority TL;DR A new firmware leak suggests the Galaxy S26 Ultra will support 60W wired charging. That’s a major jump from the 45W limit on previous Ultra models, though still slower than some rivals. The phone is expected to keep its 5,000mAh battery and use the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 chipset. Samsung might not be boosting battery capacity on its next high-end flagship, but it looks like faster charging is finally on the cards for the Galaxy S26 Ultra. Tipter Erenca

Elon Musk Is Digging Tunnels Under Nashville

Somehow, Elon Musk keeps convincing cities to allow him to dig under them. The latest locale to give The Boring Company the rights to displace dirt directly under their feet is Nashville, Tennessee, which announced an agreement this week to allow Musk’s firm to build a 10-mile “loop” that will connect the city’s airport and convention center—an arrangement that has modestly improved traffic flow in Las Vegas while turning the city into a laughingstock of the infrastructure design community. 5 reasons why Firefox is still my favorite browser - and deserves more respect

Finally, there's something to be said for supporting the underdog. In the Windows desktop browser arena, Chrome is still the top dog by far (though some of the upcoming AI-based browsers may start nipping at its heels). Edge is in second place. That puts Firefox in third. But I think the browser should be defined by much more than its third-place status. Unlike Google and Microsoft, which are major corporate giants, the Mozilla Foundation is a nonprofit organization with a strong bent toward o

The first company to complete a fully successful lunar landing is going public

Firefly Aerospace seeks to raise more than $600 million through a public stock offering, an arrangement that would boost the company's market valuation to near $5.5 billion, according to a document filed with the SEC on Monday. The Switch 2 had a very good launch month

We already knew that Nintendo got off to a strong start with the Switch 2’s launch, and now that the console has been out for a bit, we’re getting a clearer picture on exactly how it performed. According to market research firm Circana, Nintendo’s new console “debuted as the fastest selling video game hardware device in US history,” selling 1.6 million units in June. That topped the previous launch month record held by the PS4, which moved 1.1 million units in November of 2023. Unsurprisingly,
