A visual introduction to big O notation

Big O notation is a way of describing the performance of a function without using time. Rather than timing a function from start to finish, big O describes how the time grows as the input size increases. It is used to help understand how programs will perform across a range of inputs. In this post I'm going to cover 4 frequently-used categories of big O notation: constant, logarithmic, linear, and quadratic. Don't worry if these words mean nothing to you right now. I'm going to talk about them

Seventy-seven malicious Android apps with more than 19 million installs were delivering multiple malware families to Google Play users. This malware infiltration was discovered by Zscaler's ThreatLabs team while investigating a new infection wave with Anatsa (Tea Bot) banking trojan targeting Android devices. While most of the malicious apps (over 66%) included adware components, the most common Android malware was Joker, which researchers encountered in almost 25% of the analyzed apps. Once

Don't Expect New AirPods Max 2 at Apple's iPhone 17 Event, Report Says

Some of us have been waiting for Apple to announce a new second-gen version of the AirPods Max, its high-end over-ear noise-canceling headphones that were released in December 2020. They were refreshed last year with USB-C connectivity, some new color options and USB-C audio in April of this year. But if a recent report by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who's usually a reliable Apple whisperer, proves accurate, we won't be seeing the AirPods Max 2 at Apple's iPhone 17 Event, which is likely to take pl

Silicon Valley is pouring millions into pro-AI PACs to sway midterms

In Brief Andreessen Horowitz and OpenAI President Greg Brockman are among the Silicon Valley veterans putting more than $100 million into a network of political-action committees (PACs) that will advocate against strict AI regulations in next year’s midterm elections, reports The Wall Street Journal. The new pro-AI super-PAC network dubbed “Leading the Future” aims to use campaign donations and digital ads to advocate for favorable AI regulation and oppose candidates that the group thinks will

This simple phone habit could be doing more harm than you realize (and the quick fix)

Sabrina Ortiz/ZDNET Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. A friend of mine recently told me, "I always keep my phone on silent mode… which doesn't matter because I compulsively look at it every three minutes anyway." He's not the only one. From becoming a text addict to having full-blown smartphone dependency, the urge to look at and interact with our "flat things" has been deeply ingrained into our collective behavior for some time now. Also: How I'm bringing back physical m

Prediction-Encoded Pixels image format

Prediction-Encoded Pixels This format is specifically designed to be for low-color pixel art (<=16 colors works best, up to 256 colors is supported). It uses "Prediction by Partial Matching, Order-2" compression, which is able to compress packed-palette-indices smaller than GIF, PNG, and QOI, while sacrificing a bit of time. It's 2-10x slower than GIF/PNG/QOI (depending on the image), but often compresses the image 20-50% smaller than GIF/PNG (and multiple-times smaller than QOI). If you care

Japan's Creepiest Station

However, if travelling northbound in the direction of Niigata, the station takes on a vastly different character. The northbound platform is a 15 minute walk away from the main station building. A majority of this walk consists of a 70m descent down almost 500 steps into the Shin-Shimizu tunnel. The descent is terrifying, with little vision of what awaits you at the end as you venture further and further into the depths. Water from the nearby rivers can also be heard trickling into the tunnel at

This Hidden iPhone Feature Could Improve Your Call Quality

Apple released the fourh public beta of iOS 26 on Aug. 18, and it brought call screening and more to the iPhone's of developers and beta testers. But you don't need to be a developer or beta tester to use Voice Isolation, a hidden iPhone feature that can make your calls clearer for the person on the other end of your call. Apple introduced Voice Isolation in 2023 with iOS 16.4. The tech company added the feature, alongside Wide Spectrum, to FaceTime calls with iOS 15 in 2021, but only Voice Iso

The Mysterious Shortwave Radio Station Stoking US-Russia Nuclear Fears

Shortly after US president Donald Trump hung up a call with Russia’s Vladimir Putin this spring, an obscure shortwave radio channel, broadcasting from a military base somewhere in Russia, sprang to life. Through a fog of static, at 4625 kHz on the shortwave dial, a man’s voice spoke in monotone: “Nikolai, Zhenya, Tatiana, Ivan.” He repeats the message—spelled out in the Russian phonetic alphabet—followed by a series of numbers and letters. The whole message reads: “NZhTI 01263 BOLTANKA 4430 952

AirPods Max in 2025? Same drawbacks, now ready for pros, and one killer feature

Jason Hiner/ZDNET Key takeaways The ability to switch quickly and seamlessly across an unlimited number of Apple devices is still the best feature of the AirPods Max. Ghrc.io appears to be malicious

A simple typo of ghcr.io to ghrc.io would normally be a small goof. You’d typically get a 404 or similar error, finally work out the issue, fix it, and move along. But in this case, that typo appears to be doing something very malicious, stealing GitHub credentials. First, a quick bit of background. ghcr.io is an OCI conformant registry for container images and OCI artifacts used by a lot of projects. It’s part of GitHub and is a very popular image and artifact repository used by open source pr

Cloudflare incident on August 21, 2025

6 min read On August 21, 2025, an influx of traffic directed toward clients hosted in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) us-east-1 facility caused severe congestion on links between Cloudflare and AWS us-east-1. This impacted many users who were connecting to or receiving connections from Cloudflare via servers in AWS us-east-1 in the form of high latency, packet loss, and failures to origins. Customers with origins in AWS us-east-1 began experiencing impact at 16:27 UTC. The impact was substantial

The two versions of Parquet

A few days ago, the creators of DuckDB wrote the article: Query Engines: Gatekeepers of the Parquet File Format, which explained how the engines that process Parquet files as SQL tables are blocking the evolution of the format. This is because those engines are not fully supporting the latest specification, and without this support, the rest of the ecosystem has no incentive to adopt it. In my experience, this issue is not limited to Query Engines but extends to the tools within the ecosystem.
