'A Minecraft Movie' Starts Streaming Today. Here's How and Where to Watch it

If you caught some morsels from A Minecraft Movie on social media -- videos of theater audiences going wild over a chicken jockey or Jack Black passionately singing about cooking chicken with lava -- today you can stream the flick that started it all. The Max streaming service, which will soon take on the title of HBO Max again, previously announced that the video game movie would premiere in June before sharing the exact release date for the PG-rated comedy. A Minecraft Movie stars Black, Jaso

YouTube's new anti-adblock measures

Over the past few months, YouTube has been trying another round of anti-adblock measures. Currently the anti-adblock stuff is being A/B tested, and one of my accounts is in the experimental group. I wrote a filter that partially avoids one of the anti-adblock measures, fake buffering, on uBlock Origin (and Brave browser, since it uses the same filter rules). (It’s already in the default filter lists, you don’t need to manually add the filter.) One thing that people have ran into is “fake buffer

Longer commercial breaks lower the value of ad-based streaming subscriptions

Amazon Prime Video subscribers aren’t the only streaming customers being subjected to longer commercial breaks lately. Warner Bros. Discovery’s (WBD) Max has increased the amount of commercials it shows to US subscribers from approximately four minutes per hour to about six minutes per hour. A US support page for Max currently says that subscribers to Max with ads “can expect about 6 minutes of ads per hour.” But PCWorld noticed this week that this differs from what Max used to claim, which as

Nothing’s first over-ear headphones leak ahead of July unveiling

The Headphone 1 will arrive next month, and we likely now know what they look like. This overlooked phone accessory gave me a greater sense of security - and it's not a case

My tether tag set up on my iPhone. Adrian Kingsley-Hughes/ZDNET You might have heard of tether tags. These little tags offer a way to prevent phone snatching theft, a crime that's on the increase. The idea is you fit the little T-shaped plastic or fabric tag between the smartphone and the case it's in, clip a wrist lanyard to it, and bingo, no more theft. I first saw these on social media -- I remember there being quite a bit of hype about them -- and then I later bought one from a UK company

Open source can't coordinate?

Open Source Can’t Coordinate I was taking a shower this morning, and was pondering yesterday’s problem, where I suspect that I have an outdated version of hotspot Linux profiler, but I can’t just go and download a fresh release from GitHub, because hotspot is a KDE app, and I use NixOS. And NixOS isn’t a problem — it’s a solution. Max now packs 50% more ads into its streams

A hot potato: A week after a report showed that Amazon Prime has doubled the amount of ads it shows on the platform, it's been discovered that Max is doing the same thing. However, unlike Amazon, Max isn't trying to hide this increase. The streamer's support page confirms that its Max Basic with Ads plan now shows six minutes of ads per hour. According to an archive of the same page (via PCWorld), the plan showed four minutes of ads per hour as recently as February 2025. That means Max's ad loa

The iPad Is Almost a Mac Now. Time to Finish the Job

What's a computer? It's whatever helps me get my work done. I love new ideas for what computers can be, but traditional work tools still win out. For my job, it's generally a PC or Mac. When I travel, an iPad is often convenient, but it's not the same, so I often bring both. The "why not both" approach is exactly what Apple has been pitching with iPads and Macs for years, but Apple has also been adamant that these platforms will never merge. I remember the stage announcement that said as much b

Slow Wi-Fi? How to add a wired network to your home without an Ethernet cable

Rodica Cojocaru/Getty Images Wireless internet connections are convenient, but they're also notoriously unreliable. Nothing proves that point more emphatically than a glitchy video conference call, especially if it's tied to a crucial business meeting. The answer is to run a wired network connection to your home office. Wi-Fi is great for mobility, but a wired connection offers many advantages when it comes to working from home. It's faster and more reliable, with lower latency, all of which m

The 9 Best Pillows (2025) Tested and Reviewed by WIRED

You might think a pillow is a pillow. It just has to be soft and fit under your head, right? Your head, neck, and back disagree. Getting a good night’s sleep can depend heavily on your pillow, so when choosing one, here are a few key questions to ask. What kind of sleeper are you? Do you sleep on your back, side, or stomach? Do you stay relatively still, or do you toss and turn a lot? Do you usually have one pillow under your head, or do you cocoon yourself into a pillow chrysalis? This is prob

Pipelined State Machine Corruption

There are a number of network protocols that we might refer to as text protocols, where we send a line of text to the server and it sends back a response. Perhaps I should call them CRLF protocols, to distinguish from protocols where we’re blasting JSON back and forth. To speed things up, it can be tempting to have the client send multiple requests without waiting for individual responses. This is called pipelining. Support varies by protocol. NNTP requires that servers support it. HTTP 1.1 def

Trump EPA May Undo Ban on Cancer-Causing Asbestos

In 2024, the Biden administration issued a ban on the last type of asbestos still used in the United States due to its links to cancer. The Trump administration isn’t so sure that we need to protect people from such things. Earlier this week, the New York Times reported that Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency will delay the ban on the material and reconsider the rule entirely. Because, hey, when has a little cancer ever hurt anyone? The material at the core of this back-and-forth policymak
