These Headphones With Bose Sound and 100 Hours of Battery Won’t Destroy Your Wallet

I’m a fan of Bose audio. In recent memory, I’ve tried Bose’s SoundLink Plus, a portable Bluetooth speaker with big sound and a great (grassy) look; the second-gen QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds with their ridiculously good ANC; and its Ultra Open Earbuds, probably the best pair of open earbuds I’ve used to date. That being said, there’s one thing that I don’t love about Bose products, and that’s the premium pricing. Nearly $300 for a Bluetooth speaker is a lot, and so is $300 for a pair of wireless

Microsoft Promises Windows 10 Users Free Security Updates for a Year – but There Are Strings Attached

Microsoft is ready to leave Windows 10 behind, and security support is due to end in October. If you aren't ready to upgrade to Windows 11, all isn't lost. iOS 26 release date expected at Tuesday's Apple Event: Check to see if your iPhone is compatible for the update

We're almost there: The Apple iPhone 17 event is tomorrow, Tuesday, September 9. We expect to see new additions, like the iPhone 17 Air, among other devices. The company has titled the event "awe dropping" and if all goes as expected, we should be able to download iOS 26 and iPad 26 sometime next week. Coming with those OS updates are substantial changes to your iPhone and iPad's software. You may have already heard about "Liquid Glass," which (intentional or not) is sort of like Apple's take o

Tropical Storms Routinely Shredded Baby Pterosaurs, Fossil Evidence Suggests

The Solnhofen Limestone, a fossil hotspot in southern Germany, hosts a particularly rich array of baby pterosaur bones. That led paleontologists to believe that the animals flourished here—until an autopsy unveiled the broken, storm-tossed wings of two baby pterosaurs, painting a darker picture of how the bones got there. In a Current Biology paper published September 5, paleontologists at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom describe the tragic tale of Lucky and Lucky II, two baby

We Rarely Lose Technology (2023)

“Στόλος Ρωμαίων πυρπολῶν τὸν τῶν ἐναντίων στόλον,” i.e. “the fleet of the Romans setting ablaze the fleet of the enemies.” i.e. the Byzantines using their Greek Fire weapon. From the Codex Skylitzes Matritensis (12th century) A common trope in the land of fantasy fiction and games is that of lost technology. The hero stumbles upon some ancient ruins, and then finds an ancient weapon, or an ancient vehicle, or an ancient intelligent robot, that helps him in his quest. Nobody alive could possibly

How Trump’s policies are affecting early-career scientists—in their own words

Looking ahead, an academic at a public university in Texas, where the money granted for indirect costs funds student salaries, said he plans to hire fewer students for his own lab. “It’s very sad that I cannot promise [positions] at this point because of this,” he told us, adding that the cap could also affect the competitiveness of public universities in Texas, since schools elsewhere may fund their student researchers differently. At the same time, two people with funding through the Defense

E Ink posters might just save my poor, bare walls from crippling indecision

Stephen Schenck / Android Authority There’s nothing on my walls. As a renter, part of that is practical, as anything I put up there is likely to leave its indelible mark despite my best efforts to the contrary — and ding my security deposit accordingly — but a hugely contributing factor is also my indecision. If I’m not absolutely in love with what I’m hanging up, why expose myself to that headache? But I’m also not a monster who actually wants to live in a featureless void, and do look to sma

7 Vitamins That Could Promote Hair Growth and Give You Long Locks

When you brush or wash your hair, it's perfectly normal to lose a few strands, as people naturally lose 50 to 100 hairs per day. However, if you're dealing with something more serious, you may be one of 80 million people in the US affected by hair loss or alopecia, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians. Though hair loss is most commonly a hereditary condition, it can also be caused by underlying health conditions such as a vitamin deficiency. That's why it's important to ensure

AI Video Generators Are Here: Everything in OpenAI's Sora, Google's Veo 3 and Midjourney

First came the AI chatbots, then the AI image generators. Now, tech companies are rushing to release AI video generators. During the past year, nearly every major tech company has dropped some kind of AI video model. Between Google's Veo 3, Midjourney and Sora, it's quickly become a crowded market. Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen): Excellent Buds

When it comes to cutting out annoying outside noise, there is no brand in history that has denatured more decibels than Bose. The pioneers of noise-canceling haven’t been without challengers in recent years, including Sony, Apple, and others, but Bose has maintained the crown for generation after generation. Perhaps no product showcases this iterative talent more than its latest earbuds, the QuietComfort Ultra 2. There wasn’t anything wrong with the first pair. I liked their ergonomic fit, exce

Hungry Hungry Hippos Autoplay (2017)

CONTENTS YouTube BlueSky GitHub LinkedIn Hungry Hungry Hippos Autoplay Posted: June 10, 2017 Introduction A group of my coworkers play board games during lunch time on Fridays and at one point invited me to play. Unfortunately all they play is a bunch of modern hipster games when I wanted to play Hungry Hungry Hippos. No one wanted to play with me so I decided to build circuitry that would take their place. Pushing the plastic lever eventually got really tiring so

Apple Reminders on macOS Tahoe includes this interesting piece of vintage UI design

If you open up Apple Reminders on the latest version of macOS, whether that be Tahoe beta or the stable version of Sequoia – you’ll find a little bit of a UI surprise when you open up the Photos picker to attach a photo to a reminder: What makes this interestin

Microsoft's cloud service restored after reports of cut cables in the Red Sea

Microsoft said its Azure cloud platform has returned to normal service after an incident of cut underwater cables that played out over Saturday. The tech giant reported "undersea fiber cuts" in the Red Sea on Saturday morning, which disrupted Azure service throughout the Middle East and led to potential "increased latency" for users. Microsoft said that the latency issue was resolved by Saturday evening and was able to reroute the Azure traffic through other paths. Microsoft didn't provide a re

Electric bill may be paying for big data centers' energy use

In the race to develop artificial intelligence, large technology companies such as Google and Meta are trying to secure massive amounts of electricity to power new data centers. Electric utilities see the prospect of earning large profits by providing electricity to these power-hungry facilities and are competing for their business by offering discounts not available to average consumers. In our paper Extracting Profits from the Public, we explain how utilities are forcing regular ratepayers to

What to do with an old iPad

I recently inherited my parents’ old iPad 2. It had iOS 9 on it and was barely usable, in part due to how slow it was but mostly because of old SSL certificates and apps stopping support. But I wanted to give it some life because I hate to see a working machine go to waste. So I asked around and got a great answer: The iPad 2 can be downgraded to iOS 6.1.3 or 8.4.1. Both offer better performance than iOS 9 and have untethered jailbreaks. Once downgraded and jailbroken you can sideload hours and

Like humans, every tree has its own microbiome, a new study has found

A forest is a complex, dynamic ecosystem in which a rich array of living things, from old-growth trees to microscopic fungi, interact and depend on one another for survival. So is the inside of a tree, it turns out. Earlier this month, a team of scientists published the most comprehensive study of the microbiomes living inside tree trunks. Their findings suggest that the woody tissues of trees contain a trillion microbial cells above and beyond actual tree cells: communities of bacteria and si
