The Pixel Recorder’s Expressive redesign is rolling out now, but it’s not a total win

Hadlee Simons / Android Authority TL;DR The Pixel Recorder app has received a visual overhaul in line with Google’s Material 3 Expressive style. Expect changes like a larger play button, more prominent toggles, and larger waveforms. The app also takes a step back by moving some useful shortcut icons into the three-dot menu. The Recorder app is one of my favorite Pixel phone features, owing to its on-device transcriptions, cloud backup functionality, and web-based access. Over the years, the

How lidar measures the cost of climate disasters

“They give us a lay of the land,” he says. “This is what a particular region has been like at this point in time. Now, if you have consecutive flights at a later time, you can do a ‘difference.’ Show me what it looked like. Show me what it looks like. Tell me what changed. Was something constructed? Something burned down? Did something fall down? Did vegetation grow?” Shortly after the fires were contained in late January 2025, ALERTCalifornia sponsored new lidar flights over the Eaton and Pali

Local Restaurant Exhausted as Google AI Keeps Telling Customers About Daily Specials That Don't Exist

If you're trying to find out what a restaurant has to offer, you might look up its menu, or go to its Facebook page. Hell, you could call and ask. But that's all démodé. Why not query an AI chatbot, a piece of software notorious for inventing facts out of the tokenized ether of the internet, and treat its answer like the word of God? Here's why: because you'd annoy the hell out of the restaurant. Just ask the beleaguered owners of the Montana eatery Stefanina's Wentzville, who are begging thei

Satellites Spotted a Strange Glow in the Ocean, and Scientists Have a Wild Explanation

Since the early 2000s, scientists have been puzzled by a gleaming turquoise spot in the middle of the Antarctic Ocean showing up in satellite images. The patch is located just south of the great calcite belt, a region that's rich in the mineral form of calcium carbonate, and teeming with coccolithophores, tiny marine organisms that grow reflective calcite shells out of the mineral. The patch itself, however, has been considered far too frigid to support these tiny plankton, causing a longstand

5 Galaxy AI features that actually make my life easier on a Samsung phone

Prakhar Khanna / Android Authority I’ve been using the Galaxy Z Fold 7 since its launch and recently switched to the Flip 7. Apart from the Good Lock features and One UI 8 customizations, there’s another Samsung feature that has stood out for me in recent times. To my surprise, I have grown used to certain Galaxy AI features. I am not heavily reliant on them, but they do make my life easier… sometimes. In fact, I miss parts of Galaxy AI when I put my SIM in other phones for testing. From regul

Tests Show That Top AI Models Are Making Disastrous Errors When Used for Journalism

Many media executives are betting the future of the industry on artificial intelligence, going as far as replacing journalists in an effort to keep costs down and cash in on the hype. The result of these efforts so far has left a lot to be desired. We've come across countless examples of publications inadvertently publishing garbled AI slop, infuriating readers and journalists alike. AI's persistent hallucinations are already infecting large swathes of our online lives, from Google's hilarious

Why I'm recommending this Google Pixel 10 model to most people (and don't regret it)

Best Innerspring Mattress in 2025

All online brands offer a free trial, free shipping and a warranty, but some brands are more generous with their policies than others. Motion isolation, edge support and temperature are important features for couples or people who sleep hot to consider. Hot sleepers should consider a mattress that boasts special cooling features. Couples want minimal motion transfer and a strong, supportive bed perimeter. Hybrid mattresses tend to be best for people who want extra support and durability. Sleep

The Fairphone 6 no longer feels like a compromise (except in the US)

Posts from this author will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed. The Fairphone 6 arrives almost two years after the 5, a testament to the company’s approach to the upgrade cycle. If anything, I suspect the company would be frustrated if Fairphone 5 owners were considering a new model already — these are phones to keep, to repair, and to hold on to until the bitter end. The newest Fairphone continues the company’s commitment to user-repairability, long-term customer suppo

Building a computer in the 90s (2019)

Last Updated on March 19, 2024 by Dave Farquhar Building a computer in the 90s was different than it is today. It wasn’t just harder or more expensive. It seemed like every new build was an adventure. I probably built a few hundred systems before the decade ended, but the first few were definitely the most memorable. One in particular stands out above the rest. It was 1996. My friend Tom wanted a modern computer that was capable of handling photography work. He was in his early 20s at the time

LASIK Without Lasers? Scientists May Have Found a Way

What if you could fix your damaged eye without having to shoot a laser at it? Scientists have potentially discovered a novel method of repairing the cornea, similar to LASIK, that wouldn’t require a laser or other invasive surgical tool. Researchers at Occidental College and the University of California, Irvine, created the technique, which aims to temporarily make the cornea malleable. In experiments with rabbit eyeballs, their method appeared to work while also leaving corneal cells alive. Mo

What Happened to Egghead Software

Egghead Software was a US retail store that sold computer software from 1984 to 2001. It declared bankruptcy 24 years ago this week, on August 18, 2001, after an attempted transition to selling online failed. Egghead Software’s beginnings Egghead Software started in Bellevue, Washington in 1984 and moved eastward. Its founder, Victor D. Alhadeff, had a background in oil and gas, but when his old company went out of business in 1983, he needed a new idea. That came from shopping for software. A

Top Secret: Automatically filter sensitive information

We’ve written about how to prevent logging sensitive information when making network requests, but that approach only works if you’re dealing with parameters. What happens when you’re dealing with free text? Filtering the entire string may not be an option if an external API needs to process the value. Think chatbots or LLMs. You could use a regex to filter sensitive information (such as credit card numbers or emails), but that won’t capture everything, since not all sensitive information can

Apple accuses Android brand of trade secret theft in wearable tech showdown

Aamir Siddiqui / Android Authority TL;DR Apple is suing OPPO, accusing the company of stealing Apple Watch trade secrets through a former employee. Engineer Chen Shi allegedly downloaded 63 confidential files and shared research details with OPPO before leaving Apple. Apple claims OPPO encouraged Shi’s actions to gain an unfair advantage in wearable tech development. Corporate espionage is more common than many of us realize, but two tech giants are at the center of a particularly dramatic e

One of the World’s Tallest, Oldest Trees Is Ablaze in Oregon

The Doerner Fir, one of the world’s tallest coastal Douglas-fir trees, has stood within the remote forest of the Oregon Coast Range mountains for at least 450 years. On Saturday, August 16, officials received reports that this historic giant was engulfed in flames. Firefighters rushed to the scene, deploying drones, aircraft, and hand crews in an attempt to extinguish the 325-foot-tall (99-meter-tall), 11.5-foot-wide (3.5-meter-wide) tree, the Los Angeles Times reports. When the Coos County For

Two Years After Maui Burned, Researchers Reveal the Wildfire’s True Death Toll

In August 2023, downed power lines on Maui, Hawaii, sparked a wildfire that quickly exploded into multiple, fast-moving blazes fanned by high winds. Over several days, the fires reduced much of the town of Lāhainā to ashes, displacing thousands and killing more than 100 people. New research published Thursday, August 22, in the journal Frontiers in Climate suggests this disaster also caused a population-wide increase in mortality beyond what the official death count captured. By calculating the
