This security-focused Linux distribution is surprisingly good for everyday use

Ger Bosma/Getty There are some Linux distributions that were created for specific purposes. There are those for creating multimedia, developing software, network routing, ethical hacking, general use, and everything in between. And then there are some distributions that can easily serve multiple purposes. When I think of ParrotOS, I generally think of security: forensics, penetration testing, etc. I've used ParrotOS for similar purposes before, but always neglected to test the Home edition.

Nicholas Hoult and Rachel Brosnahan Discuss Their Big ‘Superman’ Action Moments

There’s a moment early on in Superman when Lex Luthor is shouting commands for different fight moves to a team of people remote controlling a supervillain where you think two things. “It looks like Lex is playing a big, elaborate video game,” and “I’ve never seen anything like this in a superhero movie before.” Both things are true, and when io9 spoke with actor Nicholas Hoult about his villainous turn in the DC film, we asked him about it. Speaking in Los Angeles recently, we asked Hoult what

James Gunn's 'Superman': Does It Have Post-Credits Scenes?

James Gunn's Superman movie swooped into theaters Friday, offering thrilling battles, big-hearted heroes and an amusingly untrained canine sidekick. You might want to see the superhero epic if you're into other films written and directed by Gunn (such as Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy) or want to catch the cinematic start to the new DC Universe. Superman stars Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and David Corenswet as the Man of Steel. The movie isn't an origi

Cognition, maker of the AI coding agent Devin, acquires Windsurf

Cognition, the startup behind the viral AI coding agent Devin, announced in a blog post on Monday that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire AI coding startup Windsurf. The announcement comes just days after Google hired away Windsurf’s CEO Varun Mohan, co-founder Douglas Chen, and research leaders in a $2.4 billion deal, a reverse-acquihire that left the rest of the startup’s 250-person team behind. Google’s deal occurred just hours after OpenAI’s $3 billion offer to acquire Windsurf

Why I recommend this Samsung Galaxy Watch over competing Androids

ZDNET's key takeaways The 47mm Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra normally retails for $650 on Amazon, although it occasionally goes on sale. It's a stylish-looking smartwatch with a slew of safety features and a long-lasting battery. However, it's only available in a single size (47mm, to be exact), meaning it may not be a good fit for folks with smaller wrists. $419.99 at Amazon Samsung's Galaxy Watch Ultra is the company's top-of-the-line wearable, sporting a tough exterior, an eye-catching design

This New App Wants to Help You Track Your Sun Exposure

The founder of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, has a bright idea that he's released as a beta app for iPhones: Sun Day, for tracking your exposure to the sun. The app is free to testers and so far contains basic information such as sunrise, sunset and the UV index in order to assess a user's potential burn-limit time and, as the app description says, "track your Vitamin D from the sun." Dorsey is currently testing UI updates and a solar noon notification, according to the app notes. In the app, users can

Office problems on Windows 10? Microsoft’s response will soon be “upgrade to 11.”

Microsoft’s advertised end-of-support date for Windows 10 is October 14, 2025. But in reality, the company will gradually wind down support for the enduring popular operating system over the next three years. Microsoft would really like you to upgrade to Windows 11, especially if it also means upgrading to a new PC, but it also doesn’t want to leave hundreds of millions of home and business PCs totally unprotected. Those competing goals have led to lots of announcements and re-announcements and

Meta CEO Zuckerberg says first AI data supercluster will come online in 2026

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Monday said he plans to invest "hundreds of billions of dollars" into artificial intelligence compute infrastructure, and that Meta plans to bring its first supercluster online next year. A supercluster is a large, complex computing network that's designed to train advanced AI models and handle their workloads. "Meta Superintelligence Labs will have industry-leading levels of compute and by far the greatest compute per researcher," Zuckerberg wrote in a Facebook pos

5 Android phones you should buy instead of the Galaxy Z Flip 7

Zac Kew-Denniss / Android Authority As a big fan of flip phone foldables, the new Galaxy Z Flip 7 looks like a phone I’ve been wanting from Samsung for years. Samsung’s Z Flip handsets have always been a safe choice in the flip phone market, but the Flip 7 looks like a truly exciting one. Between the vastly improved cover screen, larger main display, and slimmer design, it’s an impressive piece of kit. But for everything Samsung seems to have gotten right with the Z Flip 7, I do have some conc

Superheroes Are Spending 2025 in Their Reboot Eras

There have been a lot of superhero stories told over the decades from DC and Marvel, but it’s been a while since things lined up quite like this. Of 2025’s wave of cape movies and shows, several of them—from Thunderbolts* and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man to the just-released Superman and incoming Fantastic Four: First Steps—are reboots in some form or another. In the comics these characters originated from, reboots happen on a regular basis, and their movie counterparts are no strangers

Xbox Ally X and Ally leaked prices make the Steam Deck sound like a steal

TL;DR The prices for Xbox’s upcoming handhelds may have leaked. The most expensive model may cost €899, while the cheaper model is said to be €599. While the metadata was scraped from ASUS’ website, these prices could just be place holders. Earlier this year, leaks suggested Xbox was partnering with ASUS to release a handheld under the Xbox brand. A month ago, the company finally confirmed the collaboration during its summer showcase, unveiling two models: the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X and ROG Xbo

NetBox Labs secures $35M as demand for network infrastructure management surges

The platform’s technical foundation centers on modeling infrastructure relationships in detail. The NetBox model encodes realistic relationships, such as an IP address’s provision on an interface, where the interface is on the switch, and where the switch sits in a rack. In addition, NetBox Labs has expanded the core platform with complementary products that address operational pain points while leveraging the central data repository. NetBox Discovery provides automated network device and serv

Why James Gunn Wanted a Younger Jor-El In ‘Superman’

The role Superman’s parents play in his life has always differed across years of comic book reshuffling and myriad adaptations. But in our latest crack at the Kryptonian whip in James Gunn’s Superman, Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van play a brief, but fundamental role in the movie. Casting the role for Gunn was crucial, not just because of the character’s legacy—but because he wanted to buck a trend from other live-action Superman films. In Superman Jor-El and Lara are played by the voice of Rocket Racc

Pricing May Doom Asus’ Xbox Ally Handheld Before It Even Gets a Fair Shot

There hasn’t been any truly new Xbox console hardware in five years. Instead, the first real novel Xbox device isn’t made by Microsoft at all. Asus is designing a new handheld that looks like an Xbox controller split in half with an added screen. While Microsoft has reportedly delayed its own first-party handheld PC, it will need to rely on hardware partners like Asus to push its grand new vision for Xbox hardware. If Microsoft wants it to be a success, it needs to ensure people can actually aff

Sony’s Best-in-Class ANC Headphones May Have a Major Design Flaw

Sony’s WH-1000XM6 headphones might sound great, but that’s only if they don’t break before you put them on your head. While it’s too early to say whether Sony’s latest world-class headphones have a widespread issue, the first reports of broken hinges are starting to roll in, and they feel ominously reminiscent of similar problems with the WH-1000XM5. See Sony WH-1000XM6 at Best Buy In a Reddit thread that’s actually pulled from a Red Note post (sorry for the convolution; that’s just the way li

Samsung Cares About Competing Again. Tri-Fold Phone Coming by End of Year

Despite various rumors and even an alleged leak, there was no “one more thing” teasing a tri-folding phone at Samsung’s Unpacked event last week, where the tech company announced the impressively thin Galaxy Z Fold 7, Z Flip 7 with an edge-to-edge cover screen, and two stylish Galaxy Watch 8 smartwatches. But the tri-fold phone is real and it’s coming soon. See Galaxy Z Fold 7 at Samsung.com See Galaxy Z Flip 7 at Samsung.com Speaking to the Korea Times, Roh-Tae-moon aka TM Roh, Samsung’s act

Jack Dorsey Drops His Second New App in a Week

Jack Dorsey is shipping. On Sunday, the Twitter co-founder shared a link on X (formerly Twitter) to a new app called Sun Day, which he claims helps users track their vitamin D intake. It’s the second new app he’s debuted in a week, and it’s all thanks to the help of AI. Sun Day calculates how long users can safely soak up the sun before burning their skin using the UV index of the user’s location, cloud cover, sunrise and sunset times, skin tone, and even what kind of clothes they’re wearing. Bold Mission to Hunt for Aliens on Venus Is Happening

A UK-based mission is aiming to settle, once and for all, whether life exists on Venus. The mission plans to send a probe to the planet in search of microbial life, not on the surface, of course, but in the Venusian clouds. Over the past half-decade, scientists have detected the presence of phosphine and ammonia—two potential signs of biological activity—in Venus’s clouds. On Earth, both gases are produced only by biological activity and industrial processes, and scientists are unsure of their

The Ridiculously Thin Galaxy Z Flip 7 Is Sturdy AF. Ask Me How I Know

If you're concerned about how durable Samsung's foldable phones are, I'm here to tell you not to worry. And that's especially true when it comes to the new Galaxy Z Flip 7, which holds its own among today's best smartphones. After less than six hours with the Galaxy Z Flip 7, I accidentally performed my own informal drop test. At a catered affair in Brooklyn, I walked outside to get a view of the waterfront, and when I pulled the Z Flip 7 out of my pocket, I fumbled it. I watched helplessly as

Here’s the truth behind Samsung Auto DeX, and why it’s not an Android Auto alternative (Updated)

C. Scott Brown / Android Authority TL;DR Samsung Auto already exists as an Android Auto alternative in China but requires specific regional software and hardware to function. “Samsung Auto DeX” refers to an unofficial workaround enabling Samsung Auto functionality on non-support head units via desktop mode casting. Despite ongoing speculation, we could not locate confirmed evidence that suggests Samsung is officially developing “Auto DeX” as a distinct feature. Update, July 14, 2025 (06:50 A

Now Jack Dorsey has built an app to track your vitamin D

Sun Day is available now for iOS via TestFlight, and the code for the project is available on GitHub. The app uses location-based data to display your local UV index and sunlight hours. You can detail your skin type and clothing level, then manually toggle when you’re in and out of the sun and the app will track your rough vitamin D levels for the day, along with how long you can be in direct sunlight without burning.

These are the closest-ever images of the sun from Parker Solar Probe's historic flyby

NASA's Parker Solar Probe made history with the closest-ever approach to the sun last December, and we're finally getting a look at some of the images it captured. The space agency released a timelapse of observations made using Parker's Wide-Field Imager for Solar Probe (WISPR) while it passed through the sun's corona (the outer atmosphere) on December 25, 2024, revealing up close how solar wind acts soon after it's released. The probe captured these images at just 3.8 million miles from the so

Five companies now control over 90% of the restaurant food delivery market

While reading the latest results from Prosus, I realized there seems to be a trend that nobody is talking about. There is an obvious wave of consolidation in the food delivery market happening right before our eyes. The once-hot food delivery sector has gone cold faster than your DoorDash order. New entrants have disappeared as most of the VC money chases the cool and hip AI startups. Alongside a wave of acquisitions, the world's food delivery market is consolidating in the hands of 5 companies.

‘Superman’ Blasts Off To a Big Opening Weekend

The numbers don’t lie: a lot of people went to go see Superman this weekend. Per the Hollywood Reporter, James Gunn’s reboot of the DC hero earned an estimated $217 million in its three-day debut. Of that, $122 million came from North America, making it the first superhero movie in the territory since 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine to cross $100 million. Compared to other DC films, it’s the brand’s first movie to cross that milestone in North America since 2022’s The Batman ($134 million), and it
