Will Bardenwerper on Baseball's Betrayal of Its Minor League Roots

Journalist Will Bardenwerper joins co-hosts Whitney Terrell and V.V. Ganeshananthan to discuss his new book, Homestand: Small Town Baseball and the Fight for the Soul of America, which explores the consequences of Major League Baseball cutting 40 affiliated minor league teams, each one only as expensive as an average Major League salary. He explains how the accessibility and affordability of minor league baseball has made it a unique gathering point for working-class communities like the one in

PlayStation Plus Subscribers Are Eating With These Free September Games

On Sept. 2, all PlayStation Plus members can play games like Psychonauts 2, the 2021 Game Awards nominee for Game of the Year. The original Psychonauts was highly praised for its comedic storytelling and unique characters when released in 2005, and the sequel received acclaim for its creativity, art style and humor. PlayStation Plus is similar to Xbox Game Pass, offering subscribers a large, constantly expanding library of games. Subscribers can choose from the Essential, Extra and Premium tier

BioShock creator Ken Levine's Judas game still exists, now has key art

Remember Judas? No, not the biblical figure and not the Lady Gaga bop, this Judas is a project from Ghost Story Games. If you don't remember, it's the game that was reportedly in " development hell " before it was even announced . The team, led by BioShock creator Ken Levine, had gone pretty quiet for a few years after releasing the debut trailer, but today teased a look at some key art and mechanics for the game. The BioShock lineage is clear from the handful of visuals we've seen so far, but

Microsoft’s Latest Move Could Upend How You Play With the Best Deal in Gaming

Xbox Game Pass is marching toward a cliff’s edge. Microsoft’s gaming subscription service has limped along eight years after launch, while the Xbox brand and its lack of new hardware has been castigated by both players and ex-execs alike. The entire format for the subscription—where those paying the most for access to cloud gaming—is going to change. You may end up spending more or less, depending on whether you want all the best features. Those participating in the Xbox Insiders beta program a

Nintendo's Latest Updated Switch 2 Game Has Me Hungering for More

Although the Nintendo Switch 2 is only a few months old, new games, or at least updated ones, keep emerging at a steady, slow clip. Kirby and the Forgotten Land, which was one of my favorite late-era Switch games, got an upgraded edition that's available this week. The full title, Kirby and the Forgotten Land Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World, is unwieldy in name, much like the recent Mario Party Jamboree upgrade. But I found this one a lot more worthwhile. While you don't get too

Xbox Cloud Gaming is now playable in the cheaper Game Pass tiers

It's now a little cheaper to try Xbox Cloud Gaming. Previously restricted to the Game Pass Ultimate tier, it's now open to Core and Standard subscribers. Xbox Cloud Gaming is still in beta, so you'll need to sign up (for free) as an Xbox Insider. Game Pass Core and Standard subscribers can stream cloud-playable games from two categories. This includes games supported in their subscription or select cloud-enabled games they own. The biggest perk of Cloud Gaming is it's supported on a whole mess

Metal Gear Solid Delta awkwardly mixes modern visuals with old-school frustrations

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater seemed to be designed specifically for me, at first. I’ve played and loved nearly every entry of the Metal Gear Solid series, and the original MGS is one of my favorite games of all time. These weird, third-person stealth action games feature bizarre characters and scenarios that have lingered in my memories through a consistent mixture of intricate political espionage and ridiculous action sequences. The only entry that I never managed to play was Metal Gear

Skate Hands-On Preview: I Think It Might Be the Perfect Free-to-Play Game

It's been nearly a decade and a half since the last Skate game was released, but veterans won't have to wait much longer to tear up the streets once again. The next entry in the arcade-y skateboarding series launches into early access on Sept. 16. The franchise reboot (just named "Skate") was developed by Full Circle, a studio composed of much of the same talent that worked on the original games. After a long drought, skateboarding game fans have dined well on the compilation remakes of Tony H

The revived Acclaim will reveal its 2026 lineup in a September 10 showcase

Acclaim Entertainment, a big name in licensed games in the '90s, is "returning." (Although, much like the new Atari, this is technically a different company that bought the old trademark.) The new Acclaim will focus on publishing indie games and reviving classic franchises. We don't know much beyond that, but we'll learn more on September 10 in the Play Acclaim Showcase. The company's March announcement of its revival hinted at the resurrection of old franchises. But it's unclear which of its c

The ‘Borderlands 4’ Character Shorts Are Doing Their Job Right

Gearbox and 2K is set to release Borderlands 4 in a mere two weeks, the latest entry in their looter-shooter franchise. And for the last month or so, the studio has slowly peeled back the curtain on the game’s four playable Vault Hunters through gameplay breakdowns and short narrative videos. Borderlands 4 takes place on a brand new planet called Kairos, where the Vault Hunters—Siren Vex, Exo-Soldier Rafa, Forgeknight Amon, and Gravitar Harlowe—join up with the world’s resistance fighters to br

Onimusha: Way of the Sword Interview: Resurrecting a Series After 20 Years

Since its arrival on PlayStation 2 in 2001, the Onimusha series has been recognized for blending a mix of Resident Evil-style action horror with historically inspired Japanese samurai combat. Now, after lying dormant for over two decades, players will soon enter Edo-era Kyoto as Musashi Miyamoto, the new wielder of the Oni Gauntlet, in Onimusha: Way of the Sword. At Gamescom 2025, I sat down with Akihito Kadowaki, producer of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, to chat about the upcoming Onimusha game,

Resident Evil 9 Requiem Team Says It's a David Fincher-Inspired Story of Strength

I'm easily scared, but I still love a good murder mystery. So, even though I yelped and nearly jumped out of my chair watching the gameplay preview for Resident Evil Requiem at Summer Game Fest earlier this year (and again during my own demo session at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany), I still wanted to know what was going to happen to newbie FBI intelligence analyst Grace Ashcroft as she investigates a mysterious death in the same hotel where her mother was killed eight years ago. In a backroom o

Microsoft expands Xbox Cloud Gaming to Game Pass Core and Standard subscribers

Posts from this author will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed. Microsoft is expanding its Xbox Cloud Gaming technology to Xbox Game Pass Core or Standard subscribers, dropping the requirement for the highest tier Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for access to cloud games. As part of an Xbox Insider test, Microsoft is also providing access to some PC games for G

I Spent over $31,900 on Whiteout Survival – Here's Why I Regret It

Hey everyone, I’ve been debating whether to post this for a long time. It’s not easy admitting this, but after stepping back and looking at the numbers, I feel like I need to share my experience—not for myself, but to warn others who might be heading down the same path. I’m using a throwaway account for obvious reasons, but I feel it’s important to put this out there and hopefully help someone avoid making the same mistakes I did. I started playing Whiteout Survival in December 2023 and played

YouTube TV Subscribers Could Lose NFL and College Football Without a Deal by Tomorrow Night

As an Ohio native and a Buckeye fan since birth, I am filled with nerves and excitement at the start of every college football season. And I'm feeling all the feelings even more so this year with the defending champion Ohio State Buckeyes opening the season against the preseason No. 1 Texas Longhorns and with a quarterback making his first college start. I'll know a lot more about this year's team after Saturday's game -- if I'm able to watch it. Adding to my anxious feelings this week is the o

The new Skate hits consoles and PC in early access on September 16

It's been only a, *checks watch*, casual 15 years since the last Skate game came out. Now, we finally have an early access release date for skate. (styled lowercase, with a period): September 16, 2025. The early access version is free and heading to PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store and the EA app. Today's announcement gave us not only the date, but a first look at the cover art and a trailer. You can see it all for yourself on skate.'s YouTube cha

EA’s free-to-play Skate revival hits early access in September

is a news editor covering technology, gaming, and more. He joined The Verge in 2019 after nearly two years at Techmeme. Posts from this author will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed. More than three years after revealing “pre-pre-pre-alpha” footage of its new Skate title, EA has finally announced that the free-to-play live service game will be launching for everyone in early access on September 16th. The game takes place in the city of “San Vansterdam,” where you can

Silent Hill f goes back in time and back to basics

Silent Hill f starts off with a grounded (but still heavy) setup, establishing a miserable family dynamic for protagonist Hinako. With an alcoholic, abusive father, a submissive mother and an absent sister, who’s shown in flashbacks with that classic horror trope, face unseen. Something horrible is about to unfold in the sleepy, remote village of Ebisugaoka, sometime in the early 1960s. The latest entry in the Silent Hill series still has jumpscares, like you’d expect from the horror series, bu

Beat-driven puzzler Lumines Arise will overload your senses on November 11

Fans of music-driven puzzlers loved 2018's block-dropping puzzle game Tetris Effect . The same publisher behind it, Enhance, revived another Tetris-inspired game called Lumines and created indie darling Lumines Remastered . Now Lumines is getting the full Enhance treatment a la Tetris Effect, in the form of Lumines Arise, a new title set to be released on November 11. We got a chance to go hands-on with the music-driven, block-dropping puzzle game earlier this summer. The game's sensory-rich ef

You Can Play the New Gears of War Game on Xbox Game Pass Now

Gears of War is one of the most iconic Xbox series, spawning sequels, spin-offs and books. I fell in love with the series almost 20 years ago when the original landed on the Xbox 360. Microsoft brought the remastered edition of the game, called Gears of War: Reloaded, to Xbox Game Pass, and I can't wait to play it. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, a CNET Editors' Choice award pick, offers hundreds of games you can play on your Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, Amazon Fire TV, smart TV and PC or m

How They Make the Mario Kart-Style 'Ghost Car' for Auto Racing Broadcasts

If you’re within a certain age range, you may have spent weekend afternoons in your youth playing Mario Kart, the seminal Nintendo game. You may even remember passing the sticks around between friends and competing in the game’s individual time trials, one driver at a time. Among that game mode’s defining features: A translucent “ghost car” that represented the current leader in a given trial, allowing other drivers to chase after it or, ideally, pass it on the way to a faster time. Exploring the tragedy of the Counter-Strike 2 server browser

For those who enjoy Counter-Strike community servers, the situation in Counter-Strike 2 is rather dire. An avalanche of spam has rendered the server browser unusable. The transition from Global Offensive killed multiple small communities. And large server providers have taken advantage of these problems to monopolise the market. Trying to find a server either involves capitulating to these big vendors, or trawling through a trench of spam. Scraping the server browser allows us to have some in

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Would Prefer If You Moved on From Hating the Ending of ‘Game of Thrones’

Game of Thrones was beloved for much of its run—winning awards, topping “best” lists—before it famously went off the rails in its eighth and final season. Time hasn’t softened the blow one bit, even with the subsequent success of the prequel series House of the Dragon. Fans will likely never forgive the show’s disappointing downturn, and that’s something one Game of Thrones star in particular hasn’t quite come to terms with: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who played Jaime Lannister. Of course, Coster-W

‘Black Mirror’ Creator Charlie Brooker Says ‘Bandersnatch’ Isn’t Dead After All

Though Black Mirror: Bandersnatch was removed from Netflix earlier this year as part of the streamer’s pivot away from interactive programming, there may be yet another chance to choose Stefan Butler’s ’80s video game creation adventure anew. According to Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker, a comeback may be on the horizon. Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, Brooker was asked about rumblings that Bandersnatch may return to Netflix soon, perhaps classified as a game this time around. “Report

Shinobi: Art of Vengeance Is a Sleek, Brutal Return to 2D Ninja Action

The game industry has seemingly made 2025 the "year of the ninja" with the release of Assassin's Creed: Shadows and Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound earlier in the year, as well as the upcoming Ghost of Yotei and Ninja Gaiden 4. Amid all these high-profile ninja releases, Sega's iconic Shinobi franchise returns with what could be its best game in the series. Dormant for more than a decade, Shinobi: Art of Vengeance ($30) does everything right when it comes to reviving the beloved franchise. It has a stu
