This AI Box Lets You Search Your Security Camera Footage Using a Text Prompt

SwitchBot had a few AI-powered devices on display at IFA 2025; not just a furry little robot pet (I picked it up and it’s not cuddly). They included an E Ink AI art display, which generates AI art on demand, an AI tennis robot that you can “play” matches against, and a couple of robot vacuums. We’ll get to all of that, but the main thing that caught my eye was the SwitchBot AI Hub. It’s not that the others aren’t interesting—of course they are—it’s that I love good, easy automation. The promise

The Truth About Vibration Plates: Do They Really Help You Lose Weight, Build Muscle and Improve Strength?

Vibration plates are popular all over social media right now. They claim to help you lose weight or build muscle -- all while standing on the vibrating surface. But is this accurate? Does standing on a shaking platform really help you get stronger or shed pounds, or is it just another short-lived trend? To find out, we talked to personal trainers and other fitness experts. These experts explained how vibration plates are supposed to work, the benefits you might get from using them, the risks yo

Meta Reimagines Facebook's Poke Feature to Gamify Gen Z Flirting

When was the last time you were poked on Facebook? The feature, which has endured since the early days of the social-media platform, is still clinging to life and in fact being pushed again by Meta as a way to maintain connections with friends. Originally intended as a way to reach out to other users without actually sending a message or any meaningful content, it has been the focus of soft relaunches in 2017 and 2024. Meta has now started promoting poking all over again, according to TechCrun

The Doomers Who Insist AI Will Kill Us All

The subtitle of the doom bible to be published by AI extinction prophets Eliezer Yudkowsky and Nate Soares later this month is “Why superhuman AI would kill us all.” But it really should be “Why superhuman AI WILL kill us all,” because even the coauthors don’t believe that the world will take the necessary measures to stop AI from eliminating all non-super humans. The book is beyond dark, reading like notes scrawled in a dimly lit prison cell the night before a dawn execution. When I meet these

It wasn’t on public display at its IFA 2025 booth, but Boox gave The Verge’s Jess Weatherbed a brief but early look at its next Palma smartphone-sized e-reader. US economy added just 22,000 jobs in August, unemployment highest in 4 yrs

Economy Job market See all topics Follow The US job market is stalling out. Job growth slowed to a crawl in August, and the unemployment rate rose to its highest level in nearly four years, indicating the US labor market is growing stagnant. The economy added just 22,000 jobs last month and the unemployment rate rose to 4.3% from 4.2%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. August’s job report also included a downward revision to June, which showed the US economy lost 13,000 jobs that

People Are Backflipping Off of Waymo’s Robotaxis

In a bizarre (or hilarious) late-night episode that underscored public unease with autonomous vehicles, several men climbed onto stalled Waymo robotaxis in San Francisco’s Marina District and began attacking them. They then started sitting and climbing on them and, at one point, began doing backflips off the driverless cars while a crowd cheered. City police eventually cleared the scene, but the incident highlights growing tensions over deployments of robotaxis in urban areas. So what happene

Bose overhauls the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones with lossless audio and longer battery life

Bose announced a refresh of its QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds over the summer and now it's back with an overhaul of its flagship noise-canceling headphones. The company has employed the second-generation moniker once again on the new QuietComfort Ultra Headphones, but this time the list of updates is a bit more substantial. Bose says it made tweaks to audio performance, active noise cancellation (ANC), battery life, power efficiency and more. Surprisingly, the company managed to make its upgrades w

Bose’s New QuietComfort Ultra Headphones Play Nicer With iPhones

Good news for people who love powerful active noise cancellation, aka ANC: Bose’s QuietComfort Ultra Headphones are back, and they’re getting a few notable upgrades. The QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) will open up for preorder starting next week on Sept. 10, and if you’re a fan of listening to headphones wired instead of wireless, this is probably the pair for you. According to Bose, you can hook the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) via USB-C instead of a 3.5mm jack, which is ob

Lava RGB

Although the power module includes a Saturn-style DIN connector, I don’t own a compatible cable, and prefer to use VGA cables. So for my install, I decided to add a SNES multiout port. Compared to the NESRGB, Lava RGB 2.0 is definitely a worthy contender. The palette switching OSD, and ability to easily update firmware, are improvements, and I wonder if future firmware updates might add more OSD-based options. However, one thing Lava RGB does not do is process and output audio like the NESRGB.

Tesla Makes a Huge Move to Appease Regulators

Tesla appears to be bending to the will of regulators. In a visible sign of its shifting posture from daredevil innovation to cautious compliance, Tesla this week relocated its robotaxi safety monitors, employees who supervise the autonomous software’s performance and can take over the vehicle’s operation at any moment, from the passenger seat to the driver’s seat. Tesla’s Robotaxi service represents one of the company’s most ambitious and long-delayed projects. First teased by Chief Executiv

Bose announces QuietComfort Ultra headphones with support for lossless audio over USB-C

Posts from this author will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed. Bose has announced a second-generation version of its QuietComfort Ultra wireless headphones it first introduced nearly two years ago. IFA 2025 Highlight: MAMMOTION’s Tri-Fusion Positioning System takes its robot lawn mowers to the next level

Stephen Schenck / Android Authority Robot mowers may seem like a niche product, but the amount of time you save and the physical labor you avoid from not having to mow your own lawn can’t be stated enough. It started with low-powered devices that would get stuck on slopes and required physical boundaries that were difficult to install. But these robots have evolved exponentially since, with current generation robot mowers able to navigate using virtual boundaries and handle different types of t

The DuRoBo Krono e-reader boasts open Android and a built-in audio player

DuRobo TL;DR DuRoBo has unveiled its Krono E-Ink tablet at IFA Berlin, calling it an “AI-powered ePaper Focus Hub.” The device combines a 6.13-inch E-Ink Carta 1200 display (300ppi) with AI note capture, audio playback, and open Android. It is available for Kickstarter pre-sale now for €279.99, with shipping expected in November 2025. Most e-readers stick to the basics: an E-Ink screen, a bookstore tie-in, and enough battery to survive a long vacation. At IFA 2025, DuRoBo debuted a more ambi

Lenovo's ThinkBook VertiFlex Concept Laptop Has a Swiveling Screen

Lenovo isn't shy about trying new things. Last year, the PC maker teased a concept laptop with a transparent screen. Earlier this year, the ThinkBook Flip concept employed a flexible OLED display that folded over the top of the laptop lid, ready to flip up whenever you needed the extra screen space. At CES 2025, we saw a ThinkBook with a rollable OLED screen that expanded upward automatically at the touch of a button—this one is a real product you can actually buy. Get ready for another whacky

21 years later, Meta still hasn't given up on the Facebook 'poke'

Meta currently has lots of priorities Mark Zuckerberg likely never would have imagined back in the early days of Facebook. The company has pivoted from social networking to the metaverse and, most recently, to AI. But somehow, one of its earliest — and most useless — features has not only survived but is apparently getting a revamp. I'm talking, of course, about the poke, which Meta is once again trying to revive. The company is making the storied feature easier to find by adding pokes back to

‘007 First Light’ Exists Thanks to Daniel Craig and ‘Hitman’

Just yesterday, IO Interactive revealed its first gameplay from its James Bond game, 007 First Light. While it’s set in its own continuity, it’ll still have some ties to the films and books—in fact, those ties are how IO got the reins of Bond in the first place. Press like IGN got to visit the studio prior to the recent unveiling, and it was there game director Hakan Abrak revealed part of IO’s pitch for the game was sculpting Daniel Craig’s face onto Agent 47, the star of its stealth-action fr

Roborock’s New Lineup at IFA 2025 Includes Its First Robot Lawnmowers, an Ultra-Thin Robot Vacuum and More

Roborock is one of the better-known companies if you’re looking to buy a robot vacuum. Options range from the capable Qrevo Curv to the innovative Saros Z70, which comes with a mechanical arm and a handsome price to match. So it shouldn’t be a surprise to hear that Roborock is entering the robot lawn mower market, a category we test that’s dominated by companies like Husqvarna, Eufy, Sunseeker, and others. There’s also a new set of stick vacuums, an ultra-thin robot vacuum and a self-santizing

Elon Musk's New Robot Demo Is Astonishingly Bad

Hot off of proudly announcing that he had replaced 4,000 people with AI at his company, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff posted a video of Tesla's humanoid robot, Optimus, calling it a "productivity game-changer." However, going by the 52-second clip, the carmaker has a long way to go until it can successfully have AI-powered bipedal robots replace human jobs. Is this really what will make up a whopping 80 percent of Tesla's value, as Tesla CEO Elon Musk promised in a tweet earlier this week? In an

Finally, You Can Cuddle With a Cute Camera-Clad AI Robot That Feels Jealousy

Lots of people had stuffed animals when they were little. My personal favorite was a teddy bear in army fatigues, named—you guessed it—Army Bear. Fidel Castro was already taken, unfortunately. As much as I loved Army Bear, I remember thinking, “This would be so much more adorable with an on-device LLM designed to understand cloud-free natural language prompts and enable object recognition via computer vision.” And finally, almost 30 years later, SwitchBot has answered my very real and not-at-all

The Dreame X50 Didn’t Just Mop My Floors -- It Outsmarted My Furniture

CNET's key takeaways No robot vacuum has truly solved the challenge of multilevel cleaning without requiring you to physically move it between floors. This robo-vac can do it, for the high-end price of $1,700. You won't find another robot vacuum with its features for less than $1,000 right now. The whole point of owning a robot vacuum is so you don't have to do the cleaning yourself. But that was never the case at my house -- partly because of what I call my "Ikea chair challenge." I've seen

Eufy Just Launched an Autonomous Shell That Carries Robot Vacuums Up Stairs

Stairs are the enemy of robot vacuums. There isn’t currently a single robot vacuum on the market that can climb a flight of stairs without human assistance. Even the best robot vacuums we recommend for their ability to cross obstacles, like the Dreame X50 Ultra and Roborock Saros Z70, can only handle thresholds between two and three inches. Eufy’s Marswalker may be the first robot vacuum to truly be able to tackle this problem. It’s a robot vacuum that looks a bit like a wheeled Mars rover with

Facebook is trying to make ‘pokes’ happen again

Technically, the poke never really left Facebook. The classic feature from Facebook’s early days lets users get a friend’s attention with a virtual nudge of sorts. While the poke fell out of use ages ago, the company has more recently seen an uptick in its use among younger users, which has now prompted it to make the poke a more central part of the Facebook experience. Now users are able to poke their friends from a new, dedicated button directly on their Facebook profile, which will alert th

Mangrove Restoration Frustration (2021)

If any single event was a watershed for conservation of the world's mangrove forests, it was the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004. The day after Christmas that year, a magnitude 9.1 earthquake thundered along a fault line on the ocean floor with a force that sent waves — some a hundred feet high — surging toward the densely populated coasts encircling the Indian Ocean. The disaster took more than 225,000 lives. In the aftermath of the tsunami, some scientists reported that settlements behind swampy
