3D printing a building with 756 windows

I’m writing this in a building with 756 windows. I know because I counted, and spent months researching, measuring, designing, 3D printing, and assembling them for the final project of an architecture course I took last spring. I’m a computer science major, but I make a point of taking a few non-math non-CS courses each year, made possible by Brown University’s Open Curriculumn. Last semester, those courses were in architecture and epigraphy; this blog post is about a project for the former.

OpenAI Admits Safety Controls ‘Degrade,’ As Wrongful Death Lawsuit Grabs Headlines

ChatGPT’s safety guardrails may “degrade” after long conversations, the company that makes it, OpenAI, told Gizmodo Wednesday. “ChatGPT includes safeguards such as directing people to crisis helplines and referring them to real-world resources. While these safeguards work best in common, short exchanges, we’ve learned over time that they can sometimes become less reliable in long interactions where parts of the model’s safety training may degrade,” an OpenAI spokesperson told Gizmodo. In a blo

Crystal Dynamics announces layoffs, but says Tomb Raider will not be impacted

Crystal Dynamics, the studio behind the recent Tomb Raider games, announced an unspecified number of layoffs today. In a post on LinkedIn, the game developer kept the size of the cuts vague, only stating that "a number of our talented colleagues" would be impacted. In what's becoming an all-too-familiar refrain, the company cited "evolving business conditions" as the reason for the layoffs. "This decision was not made lightly," the post reads. "It was necessary, however, to ensure the long-term

Google has eliminated more than one-third of its managers overseeing small teams, an executive told employees last week, as the company continues its focus on efficiencies across the organization. "So a lot of fast progress there." At the meeting, employees asked Welle

Sending Nude Photos? Why Your Android Might Blur Them Automatically

Some Android users are starting to see a new privacy safeguard pop up in Google Messages. Images flagged as nudity are being blurred before you open them. It's part of Google's Sensitive Content Warning system, a feature designed to protect people from receiving unwanted or explicit photos. When enabled, as Google's Help Center post describes, the phone automatically scans images for nudity, blurs anything that looks explicit, and shows a warning before you view, send or forward it. The detecti

OpenAI Plans to Add Parental Controls to ChatGPT After Lawsuit Over Teen's Death

The company said it feels "a deep responsibility to help those who need it most," and is working to better respond to situations involving chatbot users who may be experiencing mental health crises and suicidal ideation. "We will a

BioShock creator Ken Levine's Judas game still exists, now has key art

Remember Judas? No, not the biblical figure and not the Lady Gaga bop, this Judas is a project from Ghost Story Games. If you don't remember, it's the game that was reportedly in " development hell " before it was even announced . FEMA Staffers Warned of Looming ‘Katrina-Level’ Disaster, Then Got Suspended

It’s been 20 years since Hurricane Katrina slammed into the U.S. Gulf Coast, killing nearly 1,400 people and displacing up to 1.2 million more. The storm’s impact overwhelmed the Federal Emergency Management Agency, revealing fatal flaws in its disaster response. The agency’s failure prompted Congress to overhaul FEMA largely through the Post-Katrina Emergency Management Reform Act (PKEMRA). This set higher expectations for its leaders and enhanced its autonomy within the Department of Homela

Apple Music Now Lets You Transfer Playlists From Spotify: Here's Why You May Want To

Apple Music subscribers can now grab songs or playlists from other music platforms, notably Spotify, and bring them to Apple. Initially tested in Australia and New Zealand last year, this transfer option has now been rolled out to the US, UK, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany and several other countries. It's

911 centers are so understaffed, they’re turning to AI to answer calls

When Max Keenan joined Y Combinator’s summer 2022 batch, he was working on Aurelian, a company that automated appointment bookings for hair salons. But less than a year later, a conversation with one of his clients led him to a far more significant problem. A nearby school’s carpool line was constantly blocking the parking lot of one of Aurelian’s hair salon clients. The salon owner called the city’s non-emergency line and was put on hold for 45 minutes before reaching a dispatcher. “She called

No Daily Hub on your Pixel 10? Here’s how to sideload it

Rita El Khoury / Android Authority One of the new highlight features of the Google Pixel 10 is Daily Hub, Google’s second attempt (after Assistant Snapshot) at reincarnating the extremely useful Google Now by showing you relevant information when you need it. However, Daily Hub doesn’t seem to be available or enabled on many phones, starting with mine. I was so eager to test it out that I figured out how to sideload it and reliably launch it on my phone, even if it remains hidden. Here’s how I

People With Ties to Trump Accused of Carrying Out ‘Covert’ Influence Operations in Greenland

Earlier this year, the Trump administration raised eyebrows and inspired scoffs when it announced it wanted to buy Greenland. Since then, the government has ignored the laughs and continued to pursue its stated objective. Now, a new report from a Danish news outlet alleges that multiple Americans with direct ties to Trump have been engaged in covert “influence operations” aimed at Greenlanders. The purpose of these propaganda efforts is to sow division between the Nordic territory and its parent

Taylor Swift Is Engaged. Her Post Is Climbing Instagram's Most-Liked List

Nobody is shaking this off: Pop superstar Taylor Swift and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce announced their engagement on Instagram on Tuesday, and the likes exploded like pyrotechnics at a concert. The post broke Instagram's record for reposts, even though, to be fair, reposting just started on Instagram in August. Still, the post hit 1 million reposts in less than 6 hours and earned 14 million likes in just the first hour. By Wednesday, it had topped 30 million likes, vaulting it to

CNET Editors Tested Camping Gear All Summer: Here Are Our Top Picks for Labor Day

Why I like it: The Grayl GeoPress is among my best outdoor gear purchases. I feel confident drinking water from lakes, rivers and even the sketchiest of sources with this filtered water bottle -- and that's saying something, because I nearly bit the dust by acquiring three strains of E. Coli from contaminated water at one point (before I knew about Grayl). It efficiently removes waterborne pathogens, including 99.9999% of bacteria, viruses and protozoa, and filters particulates like silt, micro

Nintendo's Latest Updated Switch 2 Game Has Me Hungering for More

Although the Nintendo Switch 2 is only a few months old, new games, or at least updated ones, keep emerging at a steady, slow clip. Kirby and the Forgotten Land, which was one of my favorite late-era Switch games, got an upgraded edition that's available this week. The full title, Kirby and the Forgotten Land Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World, is unwieldy in name, much like the recent Mario Party Jamboree upgrade. But I found this one a lot more worthwhile. While you don't get too
