AI text-to-speech programs could “unlearn” how to imitate certain people

AI companies generally keep a tight grip on their models to discourage misuse. For example, if you ask ChatGPT to give you someone’s phone number or instructions for doing something illegal, it will likely just tell you it cannot help. However, as many examples over time have shown, clever prompt engineering or model fine-tuning can sometimes get these models to say things they otherwise wouldn’t. The unwanted information may still be hiding somewhere inside the model so that it can be accessed

Samsung is thinking about Galaxy phones with built-in magnets, no wired charging

Eric Zeman / Android Authority TL;DR An official Samsung survey suggests that the company is thinking about Galaxy phones with built-in Qi 2 magnets. The survey also hints that these future phones could lack wired charging capabilities. This news comes as recent Samsung phones require a separate case for MagSafe and general magnetic accessories. Recent Samsung phones like the Galaxy S25 series support the Qi 2 wireless charging standard but don’t have built-in magnets. Instead, these phones

You can try Linux without abandoning Windows through dual-booting - here's how

ZDNET With Windows 10 support due to end soon, many users are looking for an alternative OS, so they don't have to purchase yet another computer. One of the best options for most people is Linux. Modern Linux distributions are user-friendly, rock-solid, and free. If you have zero experience with Linux, you might think it's above your skills, so you have yet to find the courage to use it. Back in 1997, when I discovered Linux, I was clueless about how it worked. When I finally installed the ope

How to fix an iPhone alarm that's not going off - and why it might be happening

Elyse Betters Picaro / ZDNET I started noticing something very annoying at the beginning of the year: I'd set my iPhone alarm for 7 a.m., only to sleep right through it. At first I assumed it was my mistake -- maybe I'd accidentally left the ringer volume all the way down. But after double-checking that, even switching off vibrate and cranking the volume all the way up overnight, the problem persisted. Somewhere between frustration and desperation, I installed a third-party alarm app to try and

VHS, VCDs, and Laserdiscs in Southeast Asia

One of those factoids you often hear about Southeast Asia is that VCDs and Laserdiscs were more popular than VHS tapes. The cited reason is usually mould, on account of their tropical climates. But there was more to it. For starters, what are VCDs and Laserdiscs? One of them is an initialism, and the other one is a word that sometimes employs camelCase. Initialisms are distinct from acronyms, in that you don’t pronounce them as a word. Laser is an acronym, and ATM is an initialism. camelCased w

Do You Need a Box Spring for Your Modern-Day Mattress? (2025)

You're probably familiar with a box spring, the simple wood frame with springs that acts as a support base under older mattresses. It's not a highly technical piece of equipment like a smart bed (or a trampoline, wouldn't that be fun)—this kind of mattress foundation has persisted through the ages solely due to its simple and durable design. But have you noticed you may not be seeing them as often nowadays? In my opinion as a career mattress tester, contemporary mattresses are on their way to m

This Guy Attached 21 Chef’s Knives to a Slicing Robot Arm to Determine Which One Is Best

After the fifth tomato, I had to know how my knife did. Without judgment, Heimendinger announced that it placed "second to last in the cohort." I felt responsibility for this knife, and a little embarrassment, until I remembered his knives came straight out of the box and into the testing process with an unblemished factory edge. My knife, on the other hand, had been in regular use in my test kitchen for more than six months receiving only the occasional honing. Plus, I noted protectively that t

Nvidia says it will restart AI chip sales to China

Nvidia says it will restart AI chip sales to China Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang is currently in China The chips have been a key focus of export controls aimed at keeping the cutting-edge technology out of Beijing's hands as the AI race between the US and China heats up. The move reverses a ban on sales of Nvidia's H20 chips to Beijing, which was imposed by US President Donald Trump's administration in April over concerns that they could be used by the Chinese military. The US governme

iPhone alarm not going off? 6 potential fixes to this annoying issue

The 2025 Low-Power Computer Vision Challenge: Spurring Innovation for Edge and Mobile Devices

Imagine a downtown urban street on a traffic-heavy Saturday night. Now, add a severe snowstorm and an autonomous vehicle that safely navigates it all, despite fogged-up cameras, unpredictable pedestrians in oversized outerwear, streetlights throwing glare off a dozen wet surfaces, and the snow itself, which all but obliterates the visibility of traffic signs and lane markers. A computer vision (CV) system that could make this safe navigation possible would revolutionize not only autonomous

TikTok parent ByteDance reportedly developing its own XR glasses

Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority TL;DR ByteDance is reportedly working on mixed reality goggles. Sources compare the size and shape of the goggles to Bigscreen’s Beyond headset. It will come tethered to a puck, similar to Meta’s XR glasses. Outside of AI, the hottest thing in tech these days seems to be smart glasses. We’ve known for a few months now that Meta is working on XR glasses, internally codenamed Phoenix (previously codenamed Puffin). Not to be confused with Orion, which is the

MagSafe Monday: Heading off to college in the fall? Here’s your best MagSafe gear

I went off to college with a giant desktop computer, so I’m a little envious of the gear students have today. I still remember the flex of buying a 64MB USB flash drive just so I could move papers between computers (this was all pre-Google Docs). If you’re heading to campus this fall, here’s the best MagSafe gear to make your dorm setup cleaner, smarter, and less tangled. Some of my favorite gear Abode Home Security System Abode is the best home security system and includes compatibility with H

This entry-level robot vacuum left some of my expensive ones in the dust

ZDNET's key takeaways At $199, the Tapo RV20 Max is an affordable option that works surprisingly well. The RV20 Max robot vacuum features strong 5,300Pa suction, great navigation skills that don't use the bump-and-run system, and plenty of customization options for the price. On the downside, the Tapo RV20 Max doesn't have great obstacle avoidance, often getting its brush tangled with cables and small items. Evidence Grows That Tripping on Shrooms Might Increase Your Lifespan

Image by JASON CONNOLLY/AFP via Getty Images Studies In a new study, scientists have uncovered evidence that magic mushrooms just might be an effective anti-aging treatment. Published in the Nature Partnering Journal Aging, a new paper by researchers at Emory and Baylor's medical schools suggests that psilocybin, the active compound in psychedelic mushrooms — there are a range of species that produce it, but the best known is probably Pisolocybe cubensis — might extend the lifespans of both mi

Not again: Sony’s WH-1000XM6 hinge shows signs of cracking

TL;DR A WH-1000XM6 user has reported a broken hinge, even after using the headphones “carefully.” While there has only been this one report so far, Sony supposedly redesigned the XM6 hinge to prevent this. The problem echoes an issue that plagued the previous XM5 model. The flagship Sony WH-1000XM6 headphones are barely two months old, but a new report is raising concerns about their durability. Specifically, it’s an issue from the predecessor device we had hoped was in the past. A Reddit po

Rainmaker partners with Atmo to squeeze more rain from clouds

Cloud seeding startup Rainmaker is partnering with Atmo, an AI-powered meteorology startup, the companies exclusively told TechCrunch. The two operate on complementary ends of the weather system: Atmo studies atmospheric patterns to forecast weather events, while Rainmaker digests such data in an attempt to squeeze more precipitation out of weather systems. Under the partnership, Atmo will use its deep learning models to help Rainmaker identify clouds that have potential for seeding. The forec

This hidden Pixel camera setting makes my photos absolutely pop - here's how

Kerry Wan/ZDNET One reason why the Pixel phones are so popular is the camera. There's a depth, a level of clarity, and brilliant/accurate colors that most phone cameras cannot match. Also: I changed 10 settings on my Pixel phone to significantly improve the user experience Google is always trying to one-up itself by improving the Pixel camera with every iteration. Back with the Pixel 8, Google introduced the P3 wide gamut capture feature that came along with the Ultra HDR format of Android 14

Lightning Detector Circuits

Here's a version I built into a "fake" book I found at an art store. The copper PCB is connected to the circuit ground to act as a counterpoise for the antenna, increasing sensitivity. The lightning bolt was cut with a sharp knife then filled with blue-dyed epoxy. The antenna connects to the pin jack. I used a cheap flashlight head for the LED - I used too much blue dye in the epoxy so I need a bright flash! The image below is with an LED and no pot (but with the 150k resistor added). I made se

Strategies for Fast Lexers

In this blog post I’ll explain strategies I used to make the purple garden lexer really fast. purple-garden is an s-expr based language I am currently developing for myself. Its my attempt at building a language I like, with a battery included approach, while designing it with performance in mind. This doesn’t mean all approaches are feasible for your use case, architecture and design. I tried to bring receipts for my performance claims, so watch out for these blocks at the end of chapters: I
