I tested the 4 most popular health trackers for a year - here's my buying advice now

The Oura Ring is, in my opinion, the sleep and health tracker to rule them all. Not only does it track your sleep, stress, activity, and more, it also creates helpful data illustrations that encourages healthy habits, whether that's a consistent bedtime routine, daily activity, or reduced alcohol consumption. Many users, myself included, have reported changing their drinking habits after seeing their heart rate's response to a few beers late at night on Oura's graphs. Earning high sleep scores

ICE Rolls Facial Recognition Tools Out to Officers' Phones

WIRED published a shocking investigation this week based on records, including audio recordings, of hundreds of emergency calls from United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention centers. The calls—which include reports of incidents of staff sexual assaults, suicide attempts, and head injuries—indicate a system inundated by life-threatening incidents, delayed treatment, and overcrowding. In a 6-3 decision on Friday, the US Supreme Court upheld a Texas porn ID law, finding th

Meta is definitely offering hefty multimillion-dollar pay packages to AI researchers when wooing them to its new superintelligence lab. But no one is really getting a $100 million “signing bonus,” according to a poached researcher and comments from a leaked internal meeting. During a company-wide all-hands meeting on Thursday leaked to The Verge, some of Meta’s top executives were asked about the bonuses that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said Meta had offered to top researchers. Germany asks Apple and Google to pull DeepSeek AI app over data privacy concerns

Germany just became the latest country to move against DeepSeek over mounting data privacy concerns. Here’s why this keeps happening. As you probably guessed, it’s a China thing When DeepSeek took the world by storm earlier this year, it wasn’t long before it found itself in the crosshairs of governments in the West. First, because users quickly learned that its models were heavily moderated, skirting answering questions that could cast China and its government in a bad light. Second, and mo

Microsoft Retires Legendary 'Blue Screen of Death' After 40 Years of Frowny Faces

Like Pudding Pops and Benetton sweaters, another 1980s icon is gone. After 40 years of delivering the tragic news of a PC crash to Windows users, Microsoft's infamous "blue screen of death" will be going away. But not to worry -- a black screen of death will be replacing it, albeit without the sad emoticon face. The infamous "blue screen of death" has been around since Windows 1.0 came out in 1985. Named for its bright blue color, it's a critical error screen that pops up on computers using the

Supreme Court upholds Texas porn law that caused Pornhub to leave the state

The Supreme Court today upheld a Texas law that requires age verification on porn sites, finding that the state's age-gating law doesn't violate the First Amendment. The 6–3 decision delivered by Justice Clarence Thomas rejected an appeal by the Free Speech Coalition, an adult-industry lobby group. Pornhub disabled its website in Texas last year because of the state law. The Supreme Court's conservative majority decided that the law should be reviewed under the standard of intermediate scrutin

My Lights Run on Bash

My Lights Run on Bash Among the many hobbies that modern nerds pick up, one has recently become incredibly popular: making everything in your house dangerously unreliable by inserting a bunch of software where previously simple wires had sufficed. In this post, I describe how I replaced the wires between my lights and my light switches with some Bash. Bash as critical infrastructure? Am I alright? Do I need to see a psychiatrist? Google Maps makes starting a collaborative list less confusing

Aamir Siddiqui / Android Authority TL;DR Google Maps is rolling out a tweaked sharing menu for places. Best Internet Providers in Georgia

What’s the best internet overall in Georgia? AT&T Fiber is the best internet service provider in Georgia, according to our CNET experts. It earned the top spot thanks to its combination of fast speeds, reliability and reasonable pricing. However, availability will depend on where you live within the state. AT&T Fiber's coverage is somewhat limited in Georgia, and there are only a handful of ISP options even within Georgia’s urban areas -- mainly Xfinity, Spectrum and Google Fiber. AT&T also off

In this sweltering summer, nothing is worse than waking up glued to your sheets by the buckets of sweat you shed overnight. Pokemon TCG Pocket's Eevee Grove Expansion Has Convinced My Partner to Play

I've been locked in on Pokemon TCG Pocket since day 1, and despite some reservations about how quickly new set expansions have been released, I log in at least twice a day to open my free packs. My girlfriend, on the other hand, stopped playing the game shortly after it came out. I was hoping that I could keep her engaged as my trading card buddy -- we met through playing Pokemon Go on the same college campus, and I pulled out my physical card collection during one of our first dates (I know, v

The First Week of Tesla's Robotaxis Has Been a Disaster

While autonomous vehicle companies like Waymo and Baidu clock hundreds of thousands of self-driving taxi trips, Tesla is lagging far behind. We're now one week into the EV giant's robotaxi pilot in Austin — a program Elon Musk has teased for over a decade — and it's going about as horribly as expected. Citizens who've braved the robotaxi program have flooded social media this week with videos and tales of their harrowing experiences. The footage ranges from one Tesla veering into an oncoming l

Paxton (Ken Paxton is the Attorney General of Texas), was decided 6-3 with the court’s three liberal justices dissenting. The Texas law, which requires age verification using a credit card or a government-issued ID document, went into effect in 2023 and Pornhub started blocking access to the site in the Lone Star State in protest.

Stop putting your phone face up on the table - here's why

Sabrina Ortiz/ZDNET A friend of mine recently told me, "I always keep my phone on silent mode… which doesn't matter because I compulsively look at it every three minutes anyway." He's not the only one. From becoming a text addict to having full-blown smartphone dependency, the urge to look at and interact with our "flat things" has been deeply ingrained into our collective behavior for some time now. The Effect of Noise on Sleep

Jun 26, 2025 The effect of noise on sleep Brandon Ballinger How detrimental is noise for your sleep? Andrej Karpathy raised this exact question in a tweet. The answer to Karpathy’s question is, well, empirical, with a rough experiment suggested by Paul Graham: Consumer devices like Apple Watch measure many sleep metrics, including sleep stages, heart rate variability, and heart rate. The Apple Watch’s microphone also measures noise in fine-grained frequency, which can be filtered down to times

Show HN: A Python Language Server, Mypy-compatible

In 2012, I created Jedi—a Python auto-completion library that eventually reached millions of users and billions of downloads. But as the ecosystem evolved, one limitation became clear: speed. Jedi’s architecture couldn’t deliver the performance needed for large-scale projects. In 2020, I started over—with everything I’d learned—building ZubanLS from the ground up in Rust. After five years of full-time work, ZubanLS is now the first truly fast Python language server. ZubanLS is built for profes
