Tornado Cash sold crypto “privacy”; the US saw “money laundering.”

"Crypto mixers" exist because of a peculiar feature of cryptocurrencies—most are fully traceable using their public blockchain ledgers. To provide more privacy to crypto account owners, a mixer will let people toss their crypto into a large pool, where it is "mixed" with other people's crypto. At a later date, each crypto owner can choose to withdraw their money from the pool into a new, anonymous wallet, thus making the movement of the crypto harder to track. Of course, the obfuscation doesn't

Blocking LLMs from your website cuts you off from next-generation search

Why blocking LLMs from your website is dumb John Wang 2 min read · 1 hour ago 1 hour ago -- Listen Share Perplexity was recently accused of scraping sites that had explicitly disallowed LLM crawlers in their robots.txt files. In the wake of that revelation, a wave of how-to guides for blocking large-language-model scraping has surfaced [0]. They’re generally highly vitriolic, with people opposing this on both moral grounds (“AI is stealing your content”) as well as displaying a general distaste

How to check for bad blocks on a Linux PC hard drive (and why you shouldn't wait to do it)

Kyle Kucharski/ZDNET I've had it happen before. Back when drives consisted of spinning, magnetic platters, that dreaded "tick" was a sure sign a hard drive was failing. Once upon a nightmare scenario, I waited too late and wound up losing everything on my drive. Sure, I could have recovered that data, but at a pretty high monetary cost. Also: The first 5 Linux commands every new user should learn Since then, I've always been vigilant about checking for bad blocks and sectors on hard drives.

Fintech dystopia

"Just like beauty, efficiency, competition, and security are all in the eye of the beholder. For example, one person’s “efficiency” may be another person’s “dismantling critical government infrastructure.” And yet technological solutions designed to make things more efficient, more competitive, or more secure are often presented by Silicon Valley as neutral and universally desirable. That veneer of neutrality and universality can be dangerous if it disguises the fact that Silicon Valley is solvi

Samsung may be killing bootloader unlocking on all phones with One UI 8

Joe Maring / Android Authority TL;DR Samsung appears to be disabling bootloader unlocking in One UI 8 on more devices than before. Previously, only US models lacked the OEM Unlock toggle, but the restriction now seems to be spreading to global models as well. Monotonic and wall clock time in the Go time package

Monotonic and Wall Clock Time in the Go time package Modern operating systems usually keep track of two kinds of clocks: a wall clock and a monotonic clock. The wall clock is the “real-world” clock that shows calendar dates and times, like UTC or your local time. This clock can be adjusted for synchronization (for example, using NTP) or manually changed by system administrators. It can also suddenly jump due to daylight saving time or leap seconds. Tech Companies Are Blocking Microsoft’s Creepy ‘Recall’ Feature

Microsoft’s much-maligned Recall feature, which automatically screenshots everything you do on your Copilot+ PC to create a “photographic memory,” is not making many fans across the app developer community. According to a report from The Verge, ad blocker AdGuard and privacy-minded browser Brave have decided to block Recall and its prying eyes. Brave announced its plans to block Recall in a blog post published earlier this year, in which it tipped its cap to Signal, the encrypted messaging app

Show HN: A macOS clock that stays visible when coding or binging in fullscreen

Very nice I'm a minimalist by nature and typically keep both my menu bar and Dock hidden. That said, I still like having the clock visible at all times. I've tried various widgets in the past to solve this, but none really did the trick—until now. This app nails it. I can still see the clock and date exactly where I want them, and when I move the cursor to the menu bar, the app tucks neatly underneath, just as it should. The customization options are also thoughtfully designed. Bravo!
