Robot Tries to Bust Dance Moves, Flames Out in Epic Disaster

Braving the dance floor in broad daylight — or even just when the overhead lights are on — frequently does not end well. Your clumsy moves, weird facial expressions, or catastrophic blunders will likely be captured by someone with their phone out, who will then quickly deliver the footage to potentially millions of eyeballs online. On that note, we now report that a robot has eaten dirt after trying to show off some of some dashing choreography — and seemingly had its soul sucked out of its cor

High-performance RISC-V processors: UltraRISC UR-DP1000, Zhihe A210, SpacemIT K3

Some high-performance RISC-V processors are in the pipeline for the rest of the year 2025, namely UltraRISC UR-DP1000, Zhihe A210, and SpacemIT K3. We currently have limited information about each of those processors, but let’s see what information we can gather from the web, mostly as a result of the recent RISC-V Summit in China. UltraRISC UR-DP1000 – Octa-core 64-bit RISC-V SoC The first SoC is the UR-DP1000 octa-core from UltraRISC (the website loads slowly, and I could not find anything a

4k NASA employees opt to leave agency through deferred resignation program

Nearly 4,000 NASA employees have opted to leave the space agency through the Trump administration's deferred resignation program, NASA said on Saturday. The cuts amount to an estimated 20% of NASA's workforce, and will reduce the agency from 18,000 to 14,000 employees, NASA spokesperson Cheryl Warner said in a statement shared with NPR. The total number includes the agency's loss of 500 other workers due to normal attrition, she said. During a second round of the program, which closed at midni

Scientists Uncover Surprising Link Between Tides and Earth’s Biggest Icebergs

In 2021, researchers in Antarctica noticed giant cracks developing on the Brunt Ice Shelf, an enormous stretch of ice on the continent’s northwestern corner. Two years later, the fracture grew so large that a gigantic iceberg almost twice the size of New York City broke free in a process called calving, sending scientists scrambling to investigate the icy chunk, which they named iceberg A-81. A team of researchers affiliated with the British Antarctic Survey sought to understand the forces driv

Robots eating other robots: The benefits of machine metabolism

For decades we’ve been trying to make the robots smarter and more physically capable by mimicking biological intelligence and movement. “But in doing so, we’ve been just replicating the results of biological evolution—I say we need to replicate its methods,” argues Philippe Wyder, a developmental robotics researcher at Columbia University. Wyder led a team that demonstrated a machine with a rudimentary form of what they’re calling a metabolism. He and his colleagues built a robot that could con

The Electron E1 Processor

Innovation demands processors that can keep up. Readily available processors are built on technology that is over 70 years old. This limits innovation. To meet modern demands, processors must be entirely reimagined, breaking free from the constraints that have plagued computing for decades. This spatial dataflow architecture supports general-purpose computing, without being bound by the constraints of traditional processor designs or limited by fixed-purpose accelerators. The Electron E1

‘Ok Google, turn on the lights’ is mysteriously broken for many users right now

Ryan Haines / Android Authority TL;DR Many users are reporting not being able to control lights or groups of lights with an ‘Ok Google’ command. I noticed this issue on my speakers yesterday, but thought it was a random bug. It seems more widespread, and the Google Nest account has acknowledged the issue. Yesterday evening, as I went to bed, I told my Google Nest Audio, “Hey Google, turn off all the lights.” Normally, this is one of the easiest commands, and my success rate with it is better

Tesla investors are growing wary of Elon Musk's futuristic promises

Tesla CEO Elon Musk speaks alongside U.S. President Donald Trump to reporters in the Oval Office of the White House on May 30, 2025 in Washington, DC. At Tesla , vehicle sales are slumping, profits are thinning and revenue from regulatory credit sales are poised to dry up due to Republican-led policy changes. In the past, CEO Elon Musk's futuristic promises have convinced investors to look past top and bottom line numbers. Not now. Following another fairly dismal earnings report this week, M

Detroit's Using Robots to Pick Up Garbage, Mow Grass, Clear Snow, and Much More

Detroit's Using Robots to Pick Up Garbage, Mow Grass, Clear Snow, and Much More Wall-E has some competition. At a city-owned beach in Detroit, a pilotless vehicle can be seen roaming over the sands as it picks up flotsam and jetsam washed up on the shore. The machine is a BeBot litter robot, and it and other mobile bots have become increasingly common signs in Motown, according to Crain's Detroit Business, as they clear beaches of litter and do other important tasks such as removing snow from

The rise and fall of the Hanseatic League

Today, we typically think of coalitions in the context of modern electoral politics. So it might be surprising that one of the greatest case studies in the history of coalitions is a community of medieval German merchants known as the Hansa. Starting as individual traveling traders, the Hansa built up coalitions for collective bargaining, collective action, and collective security. Through this process, they formed Northern Europe’s first ever long-distance trade network. Without corporate str

Font-size-adjust Is Useful

font-size-adjust Is Useful In this article, I will describe a recent addition to CSS, the font-size-adjust property. I am also making a bold claim that everyone in the world misunderstands the usefulness of this property, including Google, MDN, and CSS Specification itself. (Just to clarify, no, I am not a web designer and I have no idea what I am talking about). Let’s start with oversimplified and incorrect explanation of font-size (see https://tonsky.me/blog/font-size/ for details). Let’s sa

The sad state of font rendering on Linux (2018)

Preamble As it turns out, font rendering is a highly controversial topic. If you don’t see anything wrong with Linux font rendering, please disregard this as a shitpost. Thanks. I spent the first 25 years of my life on Windows and therefore I am biased towards Windows font rendering with ClearType. I also agree with research which suggests that this rendering approach makes reading easier on the eyes. There are also some facts you can’t argue with, such as non-linear rendering without anti-ali

If you try to patch this version of dwm then that will most likely fail, more so the relative comments will no longer apply or be misleading as the underlying code will have changed. If you are interested in dwm then get a fresh clone from the https://dwm.suckless.org/ site and use this as a reference rather than the basis for your build. Neanderthals Ate Maggots, Scientists Say

Modern humanity’s most famous cousins, the Neanderthals, may have had a clever, if unappealing, dietary trick for survival: maggots. Research out today posits these creepy crawly fly larvae provided Neanderthals an ample source of essential nitrogen and fat. Scientists at Purdue University, the University of Michigan, and others conducted the study, published Friday in Science Advances. Using both experimental and historical data, they showed that maggot-infused meat is rich in fat and nitrogen
