Measuring the impact of AI on experienced open-source developer productivity

We conduct a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to understand how early-2025 AI tools affect the productivity of experienced open-source developers working on their own repositories. Surprisingly, we find that when developers use AI tools, they take 19% longer than without—AI makes them slower. We view this result as a snapshot of early-2025 AI capabilities in one relevant setting; as these systems continue to rapidly evolve, we plan on continuing to use this methodology to help estimate AI accel

Amazon Prime Day Live: We're Dropping Deals and Takes Every 15 Minutes

I have been entertaining myself in between APD liveblog posts by watching car videos on YouTube and trying to process yesterday's huge Formula 1 news (Christian Horner is leaving Red Bull under murky circumstances! WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN). This YouTuber, Tati Reed, drives a 1985 blue Land Rover that she calls the Blue Tit (my Chevy Suburban was the Green Machine, before we sold it). In this very charming breakfast date with Top Gear presenter James May, the two discuss a very important distincti

The Naya Create modular keyboard is now available for purchase

The Naya Create modular keyboard is now available for general purchase after being an exclusive for Kickstarter backers. It features a split hinge design that lets users adjust each half independently to support a natural wrist posture and to reduce arm pronation. Reolink Altas Review: As Good as a Battery-Powered Security Camera Gets

I find cameras bolted onto my home supremely useful, although maybe not for the reasons I’m expected to. Yes, I care whether a camera reliably detects that someone is on my porch, but it’s not about break-ins—I mostly want to know when my packages have been delivered. Otherwise, I want a security camera to reliably record, be easy to use, last a long time on a charge, and not need a cloud subscription to work. So far, after more than a week with the Reolink Altas, the battery-powered Wi-Fi camer

Tesla CEO Elon Musk is eyeing San Francisco for his next robotaxi city — to which I say, good luck to you, sir. Musk acknowledged that the company is still waiting on “regulatory approval,” which hints at the uphill company Tesla will face in pushing this process forward. (Get it? Uphill? San Francisco?) But the permit do

C. Scott Brown / Android Authority TL;DR Circle to Search makes it incredibly easy to look up basically anything you see on your phone screen. Graphical Linear Algebra

Applications are open for the ACT Applied Category Theory Research School 2018! And because arithmetic science and geometric science are connected, and support one another, the full knowledge of numbers cannot be presented without encountering some geometry, or without seeing that operating in this way on numbers is close to geometry; the method is full of many proofs and demonstrations that are made with geometric figures. In time for Prime Day, this model costs $94.99 ($25 off) at Amazon and Anker. This is the lowest price it’s sold at in months. I’ve tested this battery pack with

Bloomberg/Getty Images Samsung's newest lineup of smartwatches might include new health features that optimize your sleep time or assess your carotenoid levels, but the tech giant's most interesting health update announced at Wednesday's Unpacked event had absolutely nothing to do with the hardware or software associated with its smartwatch lineup. The announcement that Samsung acquired digital health platform Xealth came quickly in between other announcements, but it paints a clear picture of

Lego’s Transforming Soundwave Actually Makes Some Noise

Lego’s returning to Cybertron for its latest big set, but with a twist: after giving us the Autobot leader Optimus Prime and one of his most loyal soldiers in Bumblebee over the past few years, now it’s finally the turn of the Decepticons to get their brick-based glory. Except it’s not who you might have expected to get that early honor. US appeals court blocks FTC’s ‘click-to-cancel’ rule for subscriptions

In Brief A U.S. appeals court has blocked the Federal Trade Commission’s “click-to-cancel” rule that would have required companies to make it as easy to cancel a subscription as it was to sign up. The rule was set to take effect on July 14. Reuters reports that the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis said on Wednesday that the FTC, which passed the rule under former Democratic Chair Lina Khan, had failed to conduct a preliminary analysis of the costs and benefits of the rule.
