StudioGraphic / Getty Images As I interview some of the brightest minds in technology, business and leadership for my weekly podcast DisrupTV, one thing became crystal clear: we're not just experiencing an AI revolution -- we're in the midst of multiple technological revolutions converging simultaneously. This combinatorial effect makes this even more game changing than the internet, because the internet was just one revolution. Also: 4 ways to turn AI into your business advantage As such, th

Automate tasks on Android and never forget a birthday text again - here's how

Sabrina Ortiz/ZDNET One of Android's best qualities is its flexibility. If there's something you want to achieve on your Android phone, chances are pretty good you can accomplish it. As far as task automation, you can use the built-in Rules feature, but that's fairly limited. There's also Modes, but (again) that's fairly limited. That's why I generally turn to an automation app to make the feature even more powerful on Android. One such app is called MacroDroid. You can read about what this ap

Second study finds Uber used opaque algorithm to dramatically boost profits

A second major academic institution has accused Uber of using opaque computer code to dramatically increase its profits at the expense of the ride-hailing app’s drivers and passengers. Research by academics at New York’s Columbia Business School concluded that the Silicon Valley company had implemented “algorithmic price discrimination” that had raised “rider fares and cut driver pay on billions of … trips, systematically, selectively, and opaquely”. The Ivy League business school research – w

Storage capacities are one of the few things that seems to actually be going down in price these days. It’s becoming easier and easier for engineers to deliver us more and more data in smaller and smaller packages. Just a handful of years ago, the thought of a single terabyte seemed like a joke. Now you can get twice that on a microSD card about a centimeter long. See at Best Buy Well, friends this might be one of the most affordable storage options I’ve ever seen when looking at a per-byte le

Kodiak is using Vay’s remote driving tech in its self-driving trucks

Self-driving trucks developed by Kodiak Robotics contain some remote-driving DNA courtesy of Vay, a driverless car-sharing startup out of Berlin. The two companies, which announced a partnership Wednesday, have been working together since last year when Kodiak’s self-driving trucks began making driverless deliveries for Atlas Energy Solutions in the oil-rich Permian Basin of West Texas and Eastern New Mexico. And it will play a critical operational and safety role when Kodiak, which plans to g

Finally, an Android Auto adapter that's functional, easy to pair with, and priced well

ZDNET's key takeaways The AAWireless Two costs $65 and gives you wireless Android Auto support when plugged in. A new built-in button lets you quickly swap between paired devices. The companion app is almost too robust, but that's a good problem to have. $64.99 at Amazon Since I bought my first car three years ago, I've had the worst luck with wireless Android Auto adapters. I initially sprung for the Motorola MA1 because of its popularity and, admittedly, Amazon's algorithmic recommendation,

This Handheld Gaming Device Has Promise, but One Fatal Flaw Holds It Back

Decades after devices like the Sega Game Gear and iconic GameBoy changed video games forever, dedicated gaming handheld devices are making a comeback. While the Steam Deck wasn't the first of the new era, it certainly has had the most impact. New handheld gaming devices are regularly hitting shelves these days. Ayaneo has carved out a place for itself among both Windows and Android gaming devices, and the Pocket S is one of its latest flagship Android devices. I've spent a few weeks with it and

You’re not alone: This email from Google’s Gemini team is concerning

Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority TL;DR Google is notifying users that, starting July 7, 2025, Gemini will be able to assist with apps like Phone, Messages, and WhatsApp, regardless of whether Gemini Apps Activity is turned on or off. The vague wording in the email has raised privacy concerns, with users unclear if Gemini will still access these apps even after opting out. While the email says users can disable these features in the “App settings,” it offers no specific steps to do so. Goo

Updating to Android 16 gives you 2 useful security features - but you need to enable them

Jack Wallen / Elyse Betters Picaro / ZDNET Google released Android 16 a bit earlier than expected, and although it was missing some crucial features, there are key additions to the platform that go a long way to improve security. This was an important step forward, as the need for improved security grows every year. Without companies like Google, Apple, and others upping the ante on security, the mobile space would wind up the wild west of the technological landscape, with ne'er-do-wells poppi

DJI ‘remains committed to the US market’ as shelves go bare of drones

is a senior editor and founding member of The Verge who covers gadgets, games, and toys. He spent 15 years editing the likes of CNET, Gizmodo, and Engadget. Is DJI exiting the US drone market? The company says no — but it would not explain to The Verge what has changed such that it can’t even keep a single drone on shelves. When I walked into my local Best Buy store today, June 24th, there were zero DJI drones available to purchase. There wasn’t even an empty spot for each drone to go. The ent

Here's How to Move the Chrome Address Bar to the Bottom of Android Phone Screens

Depending on how you use cell phones -- and maybe even your hand size, Google's latest tweak just might be a very welcome change. Starting Tuesday, Chrome for Android users can now place the address bar at the bottom of their phone screens, a move that finally comes nearly 17 years after the first Android phone hit the market in 2008. Users can still keep the address bar at the top, but being able to have it at the bottom might make sense for folks with a certain hand size or phone size. In a

Chinese Military Shows Off Fly-Sized Drones for Covert Ops

When it comes to robotics, nobody's doing it quite like China. Despite not truly industrializing until the 1950s — some 75 years after the United States — the nation has surged to the global forefront of robotics development. Between 2022 and 2023, China installed over half of all global robotics installed throughout the globe, scoring the second-highest annual robot deployment ever recorded — a close runner up to its own previous record, which it set between 2021 and 2022. Since then, the sec

Government Alarmed by Videos of Tesla Robotaxis Immediately Breaking Road Laws

Tesla is already in hot water over its Robotaxi rollout in Austin. As Bloomberg reports, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) contacted Tesla just a single day after its Robotaxi launch over apparent traffic violations captured on video and posted to social media. Since Sunday, the Elon Musk-owned electric carmaker has been offering autonomous rides, albeit with a human safety monitor, to a select few individuals willing to pay for the novelty. As videos taken in the wake

Chrome on Android is finally making a long-awaited UI change over a year after iOS

TL;DR A browser with its address bar at the bottom of the screen is a desirable layout for mobile devices. Chrome on iOS got this option back in 2023, but has so far lacked it on Android. Today, Google finally starts giving Android users the choice, as well. Smartphones may be pocket-sized computers, but there are a million and one good reasons why we wouldn’t want to use the same exact apps we do on our full-sized machines. Just the very fact that we’re interacting through a touchscreen mean

A new Android 14 update is now available for Chromecast with Google TV

TL;DR A new Android 14 update is rolling out to Chromecast with Google TV devices. The update is landing on devices that are still on Android 12 and those that already have the initial Android 14 update installed. The initial update was pulled due to reported issues. After missing the intended 2024 deadline, Google finally started rolling out Android 14 to Chromecast with Google TV in March. That rollout was halted, however, after users reported issues. But as the saying goes, the second time

Data-recovery firm tests $28, 500GB HDD from Amazon and gets surprising results

Fraudulent or misleading storage devices are, unfortunately, still easy to find via online marketplaces. It's also a common story that someone buys a shockingly cheap storage device from an unknown brand and ends up with a product that doesn’t perform as expected—or at all. With this in mind, data-recovery firm Secure Data Recovery recently bought a 500GB HDD from Amazon (the UnionSine HD2510) for $28 and tested it. The results were better than expected, but there are still reasons to avoid buy
