What Worries Americans About AI? Politics, Jobs and Friends

Americans have a lot of worries about artificial intelligence. Like job losses and energy use. Even more so: political chaos. All of that is a lot to blame on one new technology that was an afterthought to most people just a few years ago. Generative AI, in the few years since ChatGPT burst onto the scene, has become so ubiquitous in our lives that people have strong opinions about what it means and what it can do. A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted Aug. 13-18 and released Tuesday dug into some of

Is Meta’s Superintelligence Overhaul a Sign Its AI Goals Are Struggling?

Meta is splitting its AI division Meta Superintelligence Labs less than two months after the company announced its formation in June. The group will be split into four smaller groups, according to a New York Times report. One group will focus on AI research, another one on infrastructure and hardware projects, one on AI products, and another one on building out AI superintelligence, a hypothetical AI system that could outperform human intelligence on any and all scales. Oregon Man Charged in ‘Rapper Bot’ DDoS Service

A 22-year-old Oregon man has been arrested on suspicion of operating “Rapper Bot,” a massive botnet used to power a service for launching distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks against targets — including a March 2025 DDoS that knocked Twitter/X offline. The Justice Department asserts the suspect and an unidentified co-conspirator rented out the botnet to online extortionists, and tried to stay off the radar of law enforcement by ensuring that their botnet was never pointed at KrebsOnSecur

Watch Britt Lower’s self-recorded audition tape for ‘Severance’

If you listen to the Severance Podcast with Ben Stiller & Adam Scott, you probably remember the episode where Britt Lower, who plays Helly R., said she recorded her audition tape on her bathroom floor. A lot gets covered in today's discourse about AI in software development. Most of it is noise, ranging from nihilism that we're all writing mediocre code anyway so why does it matter to endless wannabe AI influencers doing engagement bait on Twitter. Every new model release gets a bunch of threadicles 👇 amounting to the 2025 version of "Safari feels snappier". Some of it is useful, mostly crafty developers in the community sharing novel ways they're using it to solve hard problems or draw inspir

Battlestar Galactica might finally get the video game adaption it deserves

In the 16 years since Ronald D. Moore's take on Battlestar Galactica ended its official TV run in 2009, the most surprising thing about the series is that it hasn't inspired many great games. Sure, more than a few releases have carried the Battlestar Galactica name, but none of those have managed to capture what made the 2003 miniseries and later 2004 show so special. That might change early next year when Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes arrives. Ahead of today's announcement of the game,

Giving people money helped less than I thought it would

It's the simple, brute-force solution to so many problems. In low-income countries, charities are sometimes measured against whether their interventions are better than simply giving people cash. Even in high-income countries like the U.S., when disaster strikes, often the best thing you can do is get money into the hands

Best Outdoor Games to Play in 2025

Pickleball started to gain attention during the COVID-19 pandemic when people discovered it was a sport that could be played outdoors. It can be played with two people (similar to tennis) or four people with two players making up one team. It's the ideal game to play if you have enough people at your get-together and the best part is it often comes in portable kits. The Fran

OpenAI Is Poised to Become the Most Valuable Startup Ever. Should It Be?

OpenAI is reportedly on the verge of a roughly $500 billion valuation, a figure that would make it the most valuable private company in the world—bigger than SpaceX, TikTok’s parent company Bytedance, and even public giants like Palantir. It’s a staggering number for a company with an “astronomical burn rate.” How is this even possible? As Axios reports, there are actually two deals in play: a SoftBank-led round valuing the company at $300 billion, which won’t close until year’s end, and a seco

Why Pooping on Planes Might Actually Be a Good Thing

Researchers have developed a new critical warning system for the spread of antimicrobial resistant (AMR) superbugs: poop and pee from airplane bathrooms. Scientists predict that by 2050, AMR superbugs, or pathogens that don’t respond to antimicrobial medicines, might take more lives than cancer. As such, it’s critical for countries to keep an eye on the global propagation of these dangerous pathogens, which can travel with people, in order to best prepare for future infections. In a study publi

PyPI Preventing Domain Resurrection Attacks

Preventing Domain Resurrection Attacks Summary PyPI now checks for expired domains to prevent domain resurrection attacks, a type of supply-chain attack where someone buys an expired domain and uses it to take over PyPI accounts through password resets. These changes improve PyPI's overall account security posture, making it harder for attackers to exploit expired domain names to gain unauthorized access to accounts. Since early June 2025, PyPI has unverified over 1,800 email addresses when

Should AI flatter us, fix us, or just inform us?

He faces a trilemma. Should ChatGPT flatter us, at the risk of fueling delusions that can spiral out of hand? Or fix us, which requires us to believe AI can be a therapist despite the evidence to the contrary? Or should it inform us with cold, to-the-point responses that may leave users bored and less likely to stay engaged? It’s safe to say the company has failed to pick a lane. Back in April, it reversed a design update after people complained ChatGPT had turned into a suck-up, showering the
