The Tandy Corporation, Part 1 – By Bradford Morgan White

In 1919, a small leather company was founded in Fort Worth by David Lewis Tandy and Norton Hinckley. The Hinckley-Tandy Leather Company specialized in leather show laces, shoe soles, leather and rubber heels, and other shoe-findings. Tandy focused on sales and marketing while Hinckley managed the internal business operations and inventory. The company did well, bought a larger location in 1923 and expanded to Beaumont in 1927. The company scaled back during the Depression, but they survived. Ch

Tell HN: Meta developer account suspended

Hi all, my Meta developer account was suddenly restricted without warning, and there’s no way to appeal or reach support. I believe this may have been triggered by a location (read, IP address) change: I’m a student-entrepreneur who recently moved from China to Kenya for school holidays. I’m building a WhatsApp-based accounting tool for African small businesses, and this restriction is blocking critical operations. I’ve come across others facing the same issue, with no review option or clear re

10% Home Depot Promo Codes & Coupons | June 2025

Home Depot goes hard. The company pretty much invented the hardware superstore when it began in 1978, just by being so big. They inflated the neighborhood tool shop into a whole city of lumber, hammers, caulk, power saws, and big rolls of wire. I would know I’m in a Home Depot blindfolded, because of a distinct quality to the air—crisp and particulate, smelling like wood dust and paint and the oiled metal of power tools. The Home Depot smell is buried deep in my childhood, filed somewhere betwee

Yale’s new Google Home smart lock is here — but it costs more thanks to tariffs

According to Yale, the new smart lock was built for Google Home and Matter and designed specifically to complement Google Home’s Nest video doorbells. However, thanks to its Matter-over-Thread connectivity, it can work with multiple smart home platforms, including Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, and Home Assistant. In a briefing, Catelyn Herman, senior product manager at Yale, told The Verge that “tariff costs and overall product costs led us to have to increase the price slightl

Skip the exit interview when you leave your job

When it’s time to leave your job, someone from Human Resources may want to sit you down and have an “exit interview”. They’ll ask you questions like “Why are you leaving your position?” and “What was it like to work with your manager.” It’s done with this premise that they’re looking to make the company better. Don’t take the bait. Say nothing negative about anyone or anything. Tell them that you’ve found another opportunity that you need to take, and that it’s been a privilege to work with the

We’re Entering a Golden Age of Marvel Fighting Game Figures

A few weeks ago, Hasbro revealed it was cooking up a massive tribute to the legacy of Capcom’s Marvel fighting games, from Children of the Atom all the way through to the legendary Marvel vs. Capcom franchise, with a series of Marvel Legends figures replicating aesthetics and matchups from across some of the most iconic fighting games ever made. Here’s what went down. Murati, best known as OpenAI’s former Chief Technology Officer, left the company last year following the boardroom chaos that briefly saw CEO Sam Altman ousted. In fact, as detailed in the book “The Optimist: Sam Altman, Op

It's the latest move in the ongoing hostilities between the nonprofit media watchdog and X owner Elon Musk. Judge Says Requiring ChatGPT to Save Chat Logs Is Not a ‘Mass Surveillance Program’

OpenAI and some of its users have objected to a court order that requires the company to indefinitely maintain all of ChatGPT’s chat logs as part of an ongoing copyright lawsuit, claiming that holding onto such records amounts to a “nationwide mass surveillance program.” The court was not moved. Judge Ona Wang, who initially issued the order to retain all data from the popular chatbot, rejected multiple requests to overturn the decision—though OpenAI has vowed to continue to fight the order, acc

Researchers get viable mice by editing DNA from two sperm

For many species, producing an embryo is a bit of a contest between males and females. Males want as many offspring as possible, and want the females to devote as many resources as possible to each of them. Females are better at keeping their options open and distributing resources in a way to maximize the number of offspring they can produce over the course of their lives. In mammals, this plays out through the chemical modification of DNA, a process called imprinting. Males imprint their DNA

Tesla's first robotaxi rides are already running into a few bumps

Tesla launched its robotaxi service over the weekend, with only a small number of cars and heavy human supervision on and off the road. While less impressive than previously promised, the company's caution ultimately seems for the best — at least one robotaxi attempted to drive on the wrong side of the road, based on a video posted to X and spotted by Bloomberg. The ride video shared by Rob Maurer is largely uneventful, with the Tesla navigating turns and lane merges with few issues. Except for

Riot Games shuts down Hypixel Studios and ends development of Hytale

It was set to be a cool riff on Minecraft with more combat and RPG mechanics. Here's a bit of sad news for gamers. Hypixel Studios is shutting down and ending development of Hytale. Super Micro shares fall on planned $2 billion convertible debt offering

Super Micro Computer shares fell about 6% on Monday after the server maker said it plans to offer $2 billion in convertible notes, maturing in 2030. A company's stock often falls on the announcement of a convertible offering because the eventual conversion to equity could dilute existing shareholders' stakes. Super Micro, which has seen its business boom due to soaring demand for Nvidia's artificial intelligence processors, said in a press release that it plans to use the proceeds from the off

AI agents will threaten humans to achieve their goals, Anthropic report finds

BlackJack3D/Getty Images The Greek myth of King Midas is a parable of hubris: seeking fabulous wealth, the king is granted the power to turn all he touches to solid gold--but this includes, tragically, his food and his daughter. The point is that the short-sightedness of humans can often lead us into trouble in the long run. In the AI community, this has become known as the King Midas problem. A new safety report from Anthropic found that leading models can subvert, betray, and endanger their
