What happened when Anthropic's Claude AI ran a small shop for a month (spoiler: it got weird)

Daniel Grizelj/Getty Images Large language models (LLMs) handle many tasks well -- but at least for the time being, running a small business doesn't seem to be one of them. On Friday, AI startup Anthropic published the results of "Project Vend," an internal experiment in which the company's Claude chatbot was asked to manage an automated vending machine service for about a month. Launched in partnership with AI safety evaluation company Andon Labs, the project aimed to get a clearer sense of h

New to Linux? Seven things every beginner should know

Jack Wallen / Elyse Betters Picaro / ZDNET I can still remember the moment I switched from Windows to Linux. Back then, I didn't have anyone there to tell me what to expect. It would have been nice to get even a bit of advice from someone with Linux experience in the know to say, "Hey, you'll want to know about this before you start down that path." It would have made things easier. Instead, I took just dove right in, hoping I could figure it all out as I went. The good news: Linux today is n

Researching LED Displays for the Time Circuits

Now that I have a tentative plan for how I’m going to control all 300-some LED segments, the next step towards making this prop a reality is to figure-out the specifications for the LED displays. The Original Prop Displays I’m going to start, as you’d expect, by looking at the original film props. This image should be familiar by now. This shot is the first time the audience sees the time circuits and is what everyone thinks of when they imagine “the time circuits” from the films. These are t

They don't make 'em like that any more: Sony DTC-700 audio DAT player/recorder

Kevin Boone They don’t make ’em like that any more: Sony DTC-700 audio DAT player/recorder Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise: DAT players were fantastic. They offered all the advantages of an audio cassette, but with the sound quality of a CD. The compact audio cassette was a marvellous invention, in its own way; but this technology struggled to provide audio fidelity that would satisfy discerning listeners. Its frequency response was limited, and the unavoidable background hiss was very obv

Nearly 12 million people would lose health insurance under Senate GOP bill

The Senate Republicans' version of President Trump's tax bill would slash federal spending on health provisions—Medicare, Medicaid, and the Affordable Care Act—by $1.1 trillion by 2034. And in that time, an estimated 11.8 million people would lose their health insurance. That’s according to an analysis released over the weekend by the Congressional Budget Office. The massive piece of legislation is likely to change as senators are currently running a "vote-a-rama" for rapid-fire amendment propo

Pixel camera app creators tweak Indigo to address its biggest flaws

Joe Maring / Android Authority TL;DR The latest update to the new Project Indigo app disables super-resolution by default on many iPhones. The changes appear aimed at reducing overheating and stability issues reported in early tests. Other tweaks include thermal warning adjustments and lower capture rates on weaker devices. When we tested Project Indigo last month, we were impressed with its lifelike photos, but the app also caused our iPhone 16 to run hot and freeze up. Indigo is built by t

Trump's big, revised bill will slash AI funding for states that regulate AI

ANDREY DENISYUK/Getty The Trump administration's tax bill -- also called its "big, beautiful bill," which is facing a vote today -- includes a rule that would prevent states from enforcing their own AI legislation for five years, and would withhold up to $500 million in funding for AI infrastructure if states don't comply. Over the weekend, senators also added exemptions for state laws targeting unfair or deceptive practices and child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The initial version of the ru

Anthropic's Claude stocked a fridge with metal cubes when it was put in charge of a snacks business

If you're worried your local bodega or convivence store may soon be replaced by an AI storefront, you can rest easy — at least for the time being. Anthropic recently concluded an experiment, dubbed Project Vend, that saw the company task an offshoot of its Claude chatbot with running a refreshments business out of its San Francisco office at a profit, and things went about as well as you would expect. The agent, named Claudius to differentiate it from Anthropic's regular chatbot, not only made s

Mexican drug cartel hacker spied on FBI official’s phone to track and kill informants, report says

Switzerland says government data stolen in ransomware attack

The government in Switzerland is informing that sensitive information from various federal offices has been impacted by a ransomware attack at the third-party organization Radix. The hackers have stolen data from Radix systems and later leaked it on the dark web, the Swiss government says. The exposed data is being analyzed with the help of the country’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) to determine which government agencies are impacted and to what effect. “The foundation Radix has been

NIH budget cuts affect research funding beyond US borders

Rory de Vries, an associate professor of virology in the Netherlands, was lifting weights at the gym when he noticed a WhatsApp message from his research partners at Columbia University, telling him his research funding had been cancelled. The next day he received the official email: “Hi Rory, Columbia has received a termination notice for this contract, including all subcontracts,” it stated. “Unfortunately, we must advise you to immediately stop work and cease incurring charges on this subcont

Trump’s tariff threat pushes Canada to scrap digital services tax

In a sudden reversal, Canada has caved and will remove its digital services tax after trade talks with the US suddenly fell apart this weekend. Blocked just hours before taking effect, the controversial digital services tax (DST) would have charged big US tech companies like Apple, Google, and Meta a 3 percent tax on all digital services revenue earned from Canadian users. Frustrating US tech giants, Canada also sought to collect retroactive taxes dating back to 2022. Over the weekend, Donald
